Have a go!
Should have an episode up this weekend, thereafter Star Dub will be taking a break for a while.

Actually, it's been on a break for a few weeks already. It just hasn't been obvious as I've been running inventory videos, the last of which still to go up is... Episode #56 - Comic Flashback: The Smelting Pool www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7GLT9dCwNM-Ralph

Very good thoughts of a very good story.
I suppose, like the District 9 movie in a way, one I'm not drawn to re-read very often because it's so bleak, but a very well-made story, very different from the usual fare from those writers and artists.
I suppose it doesn't move me as much as it would if I were given more reason to care for the characters. By that I mean, we weren't shown what they had to live for, what they were fighting for other than survival. It's difficult to do that when you're trying to portray a world completely devoid of beauty and happiness though. I think that's why I prefer stories in which the TFs are learning about Earth, because they find things to exercise their curiosity, their wonder, their mischievous side. Some guys like Blaster never lightened up, not even on Earth - presumably because unlike the Ark Autobots who had fewer memories of Cybertron at war, and Ultra Magnus, who was newly created, Blaster had been living a nightmare for as long as he could remember. Perhaps he was scarred for life and could never be happy again.
Anyway, powerful stuff.

That was really well reviewed. For anyone who has never read the story I'm sure your review would have persuaded them to do so.
I only read the story myself for the first time about five or six years ago and I can remember it being such an excellent story. If I had read it back in the day I'm almost certain that it would have blown my mind. It was certainly a landmark story and one of Budiansky's best.

An excellent review Ralph. It's a ringing endorsement and should encourage anyone who hasn't read the story to give it a chance.

This is ironically one of the only G1 US comics I haven't read yet (damned expensive Cybertron Redux<<)

Well the IDW single issue reprint can be picked up for £1-2 on ebay. The original US issue is also easy to come by.

Nice review, and a good choice of story to recover. I'm with you in feeling that it is an issue that left a distinct and lasting impression on the mind.

I've now hit the magic 100 subscriber mark on youtube. Yay. It's youtube tradition to do a vid to mark it, but nevermind. I shall have some muesli instead.

A fine idea, but then the toys would get bits of oats stuck in the joints and I would go mad and destroy the world.

Those of you who check out my channel may notice it's not being updated much of late. There likely won't be anything new up for a while yet as I need to move house, start a new job, etc. So bear with me. Bit annoying as I just hit 100 subs but Real Life must take precedent!

Nice to know that you're getting into all of this social networking thing. I can't be bothered to use anything other than Facebook though myself.

I'll figure out how to do that soon.
I am going to try to do a video before moving, if time allows. No promises though. The world needs to know of...FIERCE COW MONSTER.

After only 9 months, Bulletbike vid has been flagged for copyright! Oh no! I had thought using an obscure non-commercially available song would be safe. Ah well. But it's still there. All youtube did was put an ad button beside it. I did recently read in the Guardian that they're using magic new software now to help monetise videos rather than pull them, which is fair enough. It's how a third of money is made off youttube now and seems a fair way of doing it. Let's people have fun under fair use, let's copyright owners get cash. Everyone is happy. So click on the ad and give, er, money to GoDigital Media Group. www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DL9ED6q71g-Ralph

Genius, sir. (Your video masterpiece watched again, that is, not the YouTube advert racket thing.)

It is mentioned at the beginning of the video that this Poundland toy may be a knock-off of a Power Rangers toy. I've gone onto Wikipedia and the nearest Power Rangers toy that might possibly resemble a cow is this minotaur-like zord from the Mystic Force series. I haven't seen a picture of the zord in question but I'm guessing it could be that.
