I've recently been trying to plug some gaps in my collection of Titan trades, mostly around the middle. It is a big of a ragtag collection of hardbacks and softbacks, mostly what I found at the time.
Question is, what should I do. I like the covers on the softbacks better, but I like the sturdyness of the hardbacks. Should I go for broke and try to get them all in one 'type' or just stick with what I have. Some of the hardbacks are quite hard to find though, aren't they?
I also have Beginnings and both G2 books in hardback and softback form. Because I'm crazy like that. If I go with just softbacks, is anyone interested?
For the record, the ones I'm missing in any form are Trial By Fire, Dark Star and Last Stand.
While I decide what I'm doing, I have spare paperback copies of Showdown and Treason, and spare hardback copies of Maximum Force and Breakdown, if anyone's interested. Or I'll just throw them on ebay.
EDIT: To thread title to reflect discussion -Ralph

I have got every softback trade except for Time Wars which is notoriously difficult to lay your hands on. Although I like the covers of the hardbacks I haven't got any because one copy of each book is good enough for me.

I have a mix of hardbacks and softcovers for the US stories. The ones I really wanted I picked up in hardback when they came out. I plugged the gaps much later when the paperbacks dropped to around £4 on amazon marketplace. I'm not too fussed by the mix as the covers for both versions are all printed up the back of a few of them anyway.

I've always been quite obsessive compulsive unfortunately. Everything has to be exactly right. God forbid if a spine gets creased!

Oh, I do hate a creased spine. I am very particular about the condition of books and comics. I used to freak out when they got dented. I'm not so bad now. I can handle wear and tear a bit better these days but I am still obsessive about condition when picking up something new.
We all have our strange foibles.

I was more super-obsessive about spines when I was younger. When it came out I leant my mum my copy of the Doctor Who book Lungbarrow. She bent the spine And anyone who knows about Doctor Who will know how hard that one is to replace!

Spine creasing is evil. I hate it.

It does bug me as well. Especially when it's a book you have loaned to someone.

Lungbarrow generally goes for about 40 quid nowadays And that is because the ebook the BBC put out drove /down/ the price! I still regret not picking up So Vile a Sin, that's about 50-60 now. Sorry, drifted off topic there.

I'm not too bothered with creases on spines but I do hate creases on the actual pages of comic books. This is why whenever I but a comic book these days I read it once then seal it up in a comic book bag and then store it away in a plastic box that I brought especially for them.

Managed to snag the Botcon 2001 HB version of All Fall Down with the Geoff Senior cover the other day at FPI thanks to a handy link from Blueshift.

I had no idea that Time Wars was rare. I recall the scanned pages for that particular reprint being terrible.
I've bought the paperbacks and have resisted the urge to buy hardcovers, so far. I try to remind myself that I have the story in one collected form and don't need another variation. However, I feel my resolve weakening when looking at this thread.

I've never even seen a copy of Time Wars Are they bad, that's a shame. I bought Second Generation. I only did that because it was cheap, because it was so boring. Given that it was one of the few stories Furman was forced to write though, I guess that's about right. It has some bright moments, but not enough.

It's got some nice artwork (Second Generation) in it. The repro on Time Wars is a bit shoddy but the worst book has to be Legacy of Unicron as they get the pagination wrong on a double-page spread. Absolutely criminal.

I have just forked out for Legacy of Unicron. Damn
Is it like that page with the purple and orange Optimus Prime in the first G2 trade? How embarassing was that.

Nope. Nothing like that. Just the scans look kind of washed out and the double-page spread that has the Decepticons attacking Autobot City done by Dan Reed (issue 148 iirc) is screwed up. Instead of being done L-R it's done R-L with half the spread on the right-hand side of the page and the second half being on the other side.
Drove me mad when I got it.

The only UK trades I bought were the first four chronologically (Dinobot Hunt, Second Gen, T:2006 and Prey), which fit fairly well in with the Bob Budiansky US books. The later UK ones are all future-related and so primarily feature characters I was never that interested in.
Second Generation was worth having for Devastation Derby - the Constructicons have never looked so good. In fact, no combiner has ever looked so awesome.
As for hardback or softback, all four UK trades and all 14 US trades on my shelf are softback, in protective transparent plastic covers.

Uuuuuugh.
The tiny IDW reprints also drive me mad. And their fighting with Marvel over Deaths Head and Circuit Breaker mean we'll likely never get them all.

I have been patiently been waiting for the UK trades to be cheap on amazon marketplace. Was never paying full price as the repro is inferior to the US trades.
