It's the only show post-BM which held my interest and that I could sit through every episode of.

Robots in Disguise is one of those shows that I suspect is a bit 'marmite' some people like it, and some folks don't. It has a very distinct tone which I suspect either works for folks or it doesn't.
Personally I love it. It was the last Transformers series after Beast Machines I can say I genuinely enjoyed all the way through (can't really comment on Prime as I haven't seen enough of it). It reminds me of what I have seen of Beast Wars Second in how far it is played for overt comedy, but I think it probably sticks out more amongst the US shows in that regard.
I'd second the observation that it really starts to work when the Decepticons are introduced and the Predacons can start doing their proper schtick.

I've never heard it described as "so bad it's good." I'd just call it the latter myself. It's got an epic story along with stand-alone episodes, humour, characterisation with distinctive individual personalities, and interesting character interactions including a unique relationship between Prime and Magnus. It's one of the best examples of the "robots in disguise" concept, with some of the Transformers having been living on Earth for years without human knowledge and hiding in plain sight as vehicles.
It's superior in most respects to the three series that followed it.
Also, don't forget its significance in the history of the Transformers brand: it was the first cel-animated cartoon since the original and saw a very popular and influential return to realistic, contemporary vehicles as the main form of disguise.
It's a pity that's it's become something of the forgotten Transformers series because it was so short lived and self-contained compared to what went before and since. I wonder if this has contributed to some extent to it being remembered as worse than it actually was.

The Predacons being defeated by an old steam engine was most amusing. I am starting to get the humour in this show.
in another episode Sky-Bite is badly disguised as a racing car, then has Megatron run him over and crash boulders on top of him. Poor Sky-Bite.

I'd agree it certainly has some character interrelations that we hadn't seen much of before, and haven't really seen much of since either.

I wonder if this has contributed to some extent to it being remembered as worse than it actually was. I recall The Fandom of the time jizzing all over it when it was Car Robots, thinking it was a serious show then seeing the dub and realising it's deliberately daft. I do suspect it's subsequently been forgotten partly because it wasn't stuffed with homages. Recall how Armada had a bad rep online right up until the episode that hinted at Unicron. Again, no-one seemed to give a toss about Animated until it morphed into the homage show. Naturally, nowt wrong with folk giving it a go and not finding it to been their thing. -Ralph

I just finished watching the first season.
After my initial failure to adapt to the humour as well as the dub I am really enjoying this show. The quality of the animation is far superior to most of the cartoons you see on Cartoon Network etc these days.
It is just a bloody all round enjoyable show once you give it a chance. I am glad I did.
Also I love how Sky-bite literally has the ability to talk out of his own backside.

I feel sad today. I just watched the last episode. Are there really no more?
That really was a fun series. I know get the Sky-Byte love and now really want a Sky-Byte figure.
I will now be looking to purchase this set on dvd. I must own this awesomeness.

Luckily as we are in the UK, RID is available on DVD. It was not in the US.

Play does seem to have the first half of the series for £11 but not the second.

Play does seem to have the first half of the series for £11 but not the second. I think there's a whole series boxset too. There were two seperate releases of the whole series, once in boxes and once in big clamshells, so you should be able to find copies easily enough on the ebay (he says)

I looked earlier and there are oddly few RID DVDS on eBay at the moment, considering how many were released.
Hippobot, the first few episodes were released umpteen times, so be careful what you're buying.

How odd. The series was released in full twice. Initially in cardboard boxes, later in standard plastic DVD cases.

The quality of the animation is far superior to most of the cartoons you see on Cartoon Network etc these days. Ironic then that at the time it was held to be a distinct step down in animation quality from the western shows and early Japanese Cell animated TV shows that had preceeded it. Perhaps this says something about the pass we have come to in terms of animated series since then.... How odd. The series was released in full twice. Initially in cardboard boxes, later in standard plastic DVD cases. I wonder whether the lack of RiD on the secondary market is due to a lack of folk having purchased it during either of the releases? I am saddened and slightly surprised that it isn't more available. And yes, Sky-Byte is by far the smartest and coolest shark in town. Karl

I always felt that this was the most underappreciated TF series. Not only is it fun and funny, it's also got pretty decent character developement. You actually feel for characetrs like Skybyte. I would love to see him, and the Autobot brothers get updates in Generations. Just wish it would get an american DVD release.

What a cabbage I am. I managed to find the 2.2 boxset on ebay and put a bid on it a few days ago. Stupidly I didn't read the description properly and only just discovered that there is a disc missing.
What a mug I am.

It ends today so I am too late. Currently my bid is £2 with £1.25 postage, so hopefully I am the only mug to put in a bid.

While this doesn't concern you guys nearly as much with your fancy DVD releases already that won't play on our players, but over here Shout Factory announced aquiring the Saban lisence... so all the cards are finally lined up, and hopefully this means we'll *finally* get our own RiD dvd release!

In Ultra Magnus part 2 - slight animation error with X-brawn. You see him a darker green while helping Optimus to the space bridge. The darker green he his when super charged but this is before he gets the ugrade.

Did the US get DVD release of the ep's that where not aired or delay in airing - Skybyte saves the day. I'd like to see a full list of a compare to RID to car robots on if each episode was the same animation. But wasn't the RID ones being cut from other episodes then we got to the flash back stuff too.

Soo, my child has decided it's time to watch RiD 2001. I've had a look in the usual places but can't find the relevant stuff, so, anyone got either a download link or a link to purchase the entire show?

In terms of downloads the only ones I know of are the Karyudo fansubs of Car Robots, which are on their usual torrent site, but I don't think there's English audio with those. No it doesn't. The Japanese version has stunning music though, worth checking out just for the soundtrack. The best version to me would be the English dub plus the Japanese music. I really hated the really monotonous stuff they replaced it with for the dub.
