It's officially the last week of Summer!
Got a busy, busy week ahead, but will hopefully be rewarded with 5 consecutive days off work over the bank holiday. Five. Consecutive. Days.

I found out last night that I have a nasty computer virus somewhere, as links to my site were trying to redirect to a malicious 'anti spyware' site. I spent the whole night faffing about with anti-virus stuff, only to realise that it was something on my site itself. Google traffic has dropped to 0, which is a sure sign of badness afoot.
I'm pretty sure I know what the issue is - a malicious .htaccess file addition - I can kill it and seal up the hole but I'm at work and can't FTP in! Grr.

...an hour back home after work and the virus is gone, the exploit loop closed and my database upgraded to boot. Whew!

I've got this week off work and I'm spending some of the time to catch up on some of the reading I've been putting off for a while. First up is the T-25 fanzine.

Last day at work today. None of the job applications I did while there yielded any replies nevermind interviews so it'll be back to the dole. Again. Yay.

Try and stay positive Ralph. Keep applying, keep trying, keep refining your CV and application letter, sign yourself up for some training or a night course and let the Government pay for it. I know how galling the dole queue is, but perseverance does yield results. I'm sending positive vibes, buddy.

Whe I quit my old job I was unemployed for most of a year, then I joined a job agency, they got me one job, and that place took me on full time
I would recommend that agency to you, but it has since gone under lol
(how bad must the economy be if the job agencies are being closed down ?!?!?)

I got my current job through temp work too. Sign up to all the agencies you can and get pally with the consultant you're assigned to.

I was ambushed around half-four by the staff. I genuinely wasn't expecting anything what with being a temp worker but I was presented with a nice bottle of whiskey! And a nice card. Imagine my surprise when I opened it up at home and found there were a few pennies inside. Nice to know I made some kind of contribution in my brief time there.
Job search starts again tomorrow morning.

NHSjobs is pretty decent. There are a lot of jobs, and it is easy to apply because it is a one-click application that fills out automatically for each post. This does mean that it is hard to get shortlisted (I was shortlisting for a post the other week and we got 160 applicants) but once you get an interview you have a good chance, due to the high dropout rate (since people apply for as much as they can, they don't really want every job). For example, I ended up shortlisting 14 people, only 6 bothered to respond to calls for interview.

Seriously, my best advice is to hammer all the temp agencies. It was actually a really obscure small one that landed me jobs and then a paid post. Before that, I was just applying with bigger ones to no avail.
If you ever want to move to Birmingham and sit in an office all day we are advertising some admin jobs soon! :v

Nice that they gave you a wee send-off. That's something to be proud of.
Whenever I've left temp jobs, the most heart-warming good-bye I got was: "What was your name again?"

It is indeed good that the staff there gave you a bit of a send-off. You must have made some sort of positive impression on them.
I can only echo what other folk have said - spread the net wide and follow up any lead you can think of. Unemployment is not a great place to be but I have confidence that you will find your way into a permanent post in due course.

All the best with your job searching Ralph. The warm send off you received should at least put you in high spirits.

Spent the morning job searching and applying. Got a knock-back in the mail, which knocked me for six as I so qualified for that one it was like a job made just for me.
Decided to spend the pennies I got for work on nice things rather than stick them in the survival fund. Couldn't find any affordable copies of The Prisoner or Sapphire and Steel boxsets, but I did spring for a copy of I, Claudius (starring Derek Jacobi). One of those shows I've read loads about but never had the chance to see, other than excerts. Also picked up the audio book of Doctor Who: The Mind Robber (read by Derek Jacobi!). The original book being a childhood favourite. I still had £2 and change left so popped into FOPP and found a copy of The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (the one where Lord Tom Baker was the villain!). Hooray.
Though I am out of work I am technically not unemployed until next Tuesday as the last few days of my contract are annual leave. So I can't sign on until then or get done for BENEFIT FRAUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUD. I can't put into words how much I am dreading going through that humiliating and degrading experience once again.

Oh what a lovely week.... The mild cold that I had over the weekend decided to take a turn for the worse on Monday evening, and as a result I have spent the last couple of days curled up on the sofa nursing a hacking cough and a temperature. Not much fun at all. I seem to be improving steadily though so hopefully I will be well enough to get back to work tomorrow or Friday. Being confined to the house hasn't been a great deal of fun at all.

I logged onto Facebook about twenty minutes ago and discovered that one of my old Junior school classmates has put up a class photo from my final year at the school. What followed was about fifteen minutes of banter reminiscing about 'the good old days'.

I had a lot I wanted to do tonight, instead my bedroom door handle broke and the mechanism exploded so not even a screwdriver taking it apart could retract the bolt and let me out.
Cue an hour and a half chiselling away at the door with a doorknob and a fork to cut out the bolt mechanism so I could escape!
