The news came quicker than I expected, but at least the contracts aren't being cut short, giving Dark Horse time to tie things up.

Oh great. so now the Jedi will go into a civil war, fend off alien shapeshifters, be replaced with "Dark Force" versions of themselves, and then go to war with Wookies, and have mega crossover events two or three times a year?

Well, I don't know about the Wookiee War, but the others have all been done anyway. The second half of Revenge of the Sith, Zam Wesell, Dark Empire and, er, one of The Muppet Show episodes. Ooh, and the M&Ms figures!

Well, Star Wars comics started at Marvel and were some of the first bits of merchandise put out for SW.

I still have a great soft spot for the Marvel Star Wars comics. Back before Star Wars was a sort of sub-genre of its own they captured the free-wheeling adventure feeling of the first movie quite well.

Ooh, and the M&Ms figures! The "Wookie War," was a jab at Avengers vs X-Men, to go along with the jabs at Civil War, Secret Invasion, and Dark Reign. Almost mentioned Anakin being launched off to an alien planet to take a potshot at Planet Hulk... but pulled that one back since from what I understand, Planet Hulk is actually one of the only really good storylines Marvel has done over the last decade. I'll admit, the wookie war/AvX was a stretch.

Karl Yes, Marvel did some excellent Star Wars stories way back when. I really enjoyed them as a child. I remember the Dark Lady story (was that what she was called, with the energy whip?) being very good, and I also enjoyed Lando and Chewbacca's adventures tracking down Han, especially when they came up against Bossk and IG-88.

The daft thing is that now there will be a new trilogy (that probably will be shot in 3D) the conversion would have made sense, especially if they got all 6 done to be released in the run up to VII.

I never did see TPM3D in the end. I assumed the original plan of having two 3D films this year was so they could all be out before Episode VII. So we would have Star Wars/Empire next year, then Jedi early 2015 before the new film came out. Oh well big screen Star Wars for the fortieth maybe?
As for the director news... hmmm.... as long as he doesn't bring people in for rewrites I'm remaining hopeful.

Going by reports on the usually reliable Box office Mojo, 3D re-releases of older movies have been steadily tanking in the US market and Disney recently cancelled their plans to continue releasing older animated material in the 3D format in cinemas.
This SW decision may be a pragmatic one with one view to the current market or may relate to Disney's current cold feet on 3D re-releases. I would be very surprised if the other SW films are not converted to 3D at some point (especially as the new ones will almost certainly be released in 3D as per Disney's Marvel movies from now on) but not for a while and perhaps for home video formats rather than the cinema.
