Regariding unseen suff: I recognised every scene from that deleted scene montage from reading 'unseen Star Wars' articles over the years, this isn't newly discovered stuff but stuff widely known about if you knew where to look. Which makes me think they could have put it on DVD by now.
I preordered the 2004 DVDs as soon as they were available and have never felt the need to own the next set of releases or these blurays, wich are bound to be balls expensive, at least for a while. Not only do I have the original trilogy I also have the pretty good individual releases of the prequels.
If they ever get around to doing a set with the 45 minutes of stuff cut from Attack of the Clones I might take a look, but all the cut stuff is probably only existent in a form of a bunch of people in costume running around a room with a green screen rather than properly created footage.

Oddly inserting Haydn Christianson into the finale doesn't bother me, neither do the Dewbacks.
Han shooting first on the other hand (despite Lucas saying that's what the original story boards had) and the inclusion of the Sy Snootles musical number (because "it would be fun") are more troublesome.

I don't think it is as broad as that. One of the pivotal issues was that the gentleman being sued was the designer of the physical prop in question, and thus the arguement was that he retained rights to duplicate and sell the result of his work. I wouldn't say that it would extend to just anyone duplicating something that had been designed by a third party - my reading of the ruling is a little narrower I think. Karl |

If something's not under copyright, then anyone can copy it. Oddly, the BBC today has another article about the same case, from the same reporter and with the same headline. As the release gets near, reports have appeared here and here. Fixes have been made since 2004, so these should be improvements on the DVD's from before. Will the "new things to notice" cause us to moan? Hopefully there's no new errors that make me groan. With the deleted stuff I'm still looking forward to this, but it's confirmed: no theatrical cuts! others may want to give it a miss. |

ps Blinking Ewoks are awesome! Seems like a positive change imo. There's no way a creature would evolve on a planet covered in jungle without having some sort of eye protection.

I dropped out of reading about the BD/BR's[delete as per preference] a while ago, so as to maintain some element of surprise as I watch them - although obviously I've heard about the Jedi changes. Also I notice on the BBFC site that for AOTC "Previous cuts waived", so that's good - that bit always looked awkward.

I've never noticed whether or not ewoks have a blink rate in much the same way I have never noticed whether Mark Hammil had a blink rate... It has never struck me as very important.

I've watched 4 of the films so far and here's what I've noticed...
TPM
It's essentially the DVD cut with the Yoda puppet replaced with a CGI version.
AOTC
Again this is basically the DVD cut but with an audio addition: when Anakin is having his nightmare, his mother can be heard calling out for help.
Also as I mentioned above, the headbutt is finally in a UK release (though it was always included in TV showings).
ROTS
The wipe that became a straight cut in the DVD release is now a wipe again...so unless there's anything new I missed I guess this is the theatrical cut.
SW
DVD version but with colour improvements: Luke doesn't have a green lightsaber onboard the Falcon for instance. Also the matte boxes around the ships are gone (finally). There's some extra rocks in front of R2 when he's hiding from the Sandpeople (probably wouldn't have noticed but I saw it mentioned on a site somewhere), there's that new noise that scares off the Sand People (linked somewhere above) and I think that's it.
Other minor notes: in the Jabba scene "percent" is subbed as a word again (the DVD used "%") and the credits are still from the Special Edition so there's a 1997 date on the end.

CHANGES - Part 2
ESB
Not many changes here. As reported by various places this is the DVD version (and Vader's saber still appeared pink at times) but a visible rod during the Wampa attack has been removed - I forgot about it actually, I'm just assuming it was gone. The Matte boxes have *mostly* been removed which is good, but it does make the ones that are still there stand out more.
Again the credits are still from the Special Edition. Not really a problem with Star Wars (or Jedi which also still has them) but with Empire it means Clive Revill is still credited as the Emperor despite being replaced with Ian McDiarmid (as with the DVD version).
ROTJ
A handful of small alterations here that I probably wouldn't have noticed If I hadn't been looking for them (and the biggie which you can't miss really). I believe they have all been reported, but to recap this is the DVD version with the following changes:
-The ruddy huge door at Jabba's is now even bigger.
-A Dug (Sebulba's species) has been added to a brief shot in Jabba's Palace
-Blinking Ewoks
-More tools pop out of Artoo when he's shot
-The "no. nooooooooooo" we've all heard a lot about.
There have also been a couple of fixes: the Emperor's slugs are gone and that crossed lightsaber shot that they cocked up on the DVD release has been fixed - although in other shots the colours are still off.
The matte boxes... well 2/3 of the way through the film and I would say they have mostly gone, but come the final battle and they are everywhere.
Also a final point (if anyone was wondering) the OT films still have the crushed blacks from the DVD versions. EDIT: though it didn't seem as extreme.
Well that's it for the films, now to check out the extras.
