Tonight a superhero film comes to TV which I had not been inclined to spend money to see, but am sufficiently curious that I will attempt to watch it for free. Green Lantern. My expectations are low, so I should not be disappointed if it's awful, but might possibly be pleasantly surprised. We shall see.

It's on a bit late for me, so I'll probably fall asleep like I did during Divergent. But I must give it a go! There must surely be some good DC films this century apart from the Dark Knight trilogy.
On a more hopeful note, Agent Carter season 2 out on Blu-ray tomorrow!

I am intrigued to see your reaction to GL. Andy I survived it to the end! More bearable than the new Superman movies, it didn't drag with attempts at solemnity. The special effects looked... unfinished. I liked how his mask proved completely ineffective at preventing people he knew from recognising him. Watchable and forgettable. Martin

Martin Until Fantastic Four 2015 came out, GL was the most panned of the modern-era superhero films. I thought it was watchable, but hamstrung by the ridiculous shoehorning in of almost all the GL mythos in the intro story, and choosing Hal Jordan as opposed to John Stewart. Andy

Glad to hear that you enjoyed it - I thought it was cracking stuff. I'm torn between "I wish there was going to be more", and "you know what, sometimes it is nice when something goes out before it is moribund".
Definitely do need to snag both seasons once I am properly ensconsed down south next year.

I have now experienced the horror of 'The History Channel' which appears to be about explaining all history as being really about space aliens who are behind everything. Also: nazis.

It has some good dramas. I'm sure that's where Vikings and Black Sails appear after their Amazon exclusivity expires.

Nope, you're right there. But in a world where we have the benefit of BBC documentaries, they are by far the best thing about that channel. Vikings is great.

I finished Timeslip this week. I've been watching for the last month or so in my old Doctor Who marathon slot. I know Ralph and Phil said they'd watched the first episode and not thought much of it, but there's a lot to like in it. Although there are four separate stories, they work together as a 26 episode series with characters recurring throughout. It's disjointed because it was intended to be a six episode series that was extended twice while in production, so the first story does stand out as different to the other three - but Victor Pemberton was brought in on the strength of Fury from the Deep to write the last seven episodes when the regular writer ran out of steam, and it does finish quite strongly. It also has David Graham in it in another Doctor Who connection.
The production values are about five years behind the Doctor Who of the time, feeling a bit William Hartnell just as Pertwee was kicking off on the BBC, but I would say it's a worthwhile watch. I really got into it. There are some awful aspects - John "CJ" Barron plays a scientist with an astonishingly poor American accent, total cardboard - but as an ITV children's serial I'd say it's way better than something like The Tomorrow People.
This DVD set has also had a bit of love thrown at it. The Andrew Pixley liner notes are actually a full 128 page book, and there is a nicely made 90 minute documentary in the extras along with what looks like a fan made mini sequel from about ten years back with the original cast. Footage from conventions too. I'm not sure of the pedigree of the actual episodes, I need to read the book, but if these existing B/W versions are telecines made for overseas sales, then they've clearly been vidfired or something close to. They look like video to me. I must read the book and find out.
It's hard to recommend something like this because it's possibly an acquired taste being fairly rudimentary and much more kids TV that the hybrid other fantasy shows are, but it's definitely worth a go if you have the episodes to hand.
