When Crossroads finishes are you going to try and get a part on Brookside?

I recommend Bank of Dave on Netflix for a feel-good Brit comedy drama.

DOES IT INVOLVE ACID-INDUCED BRAIN INJURIES?!?!?!!!!
'Cos that's what it has to compete with if it's gonna take on Crossroad; fuck yeah.

No, it's an (almost) real life story about a bloke from Burnley who tries to take on the financial authorities in London and start a local bank. For local people. It's embellished a bit from the truth but it's just a nice gentle comedy.
Similarly, that Jim Broadbent one about the stolen painting, The Duke, is also worth watching. Both real life stories about little people trying to stick it to The Man (who also isn't Urzu).

Had anyone here heard of the 2022 film 'All Quiet on the Western Front' until it got nominated for all the awards? I hadn't. I'm not aware it ever got shown in the Cardiff cinemas.
I'd like to think that the film BAFTA thinks is the best film of the year and apparently has better cinematography than Top Gun: Maverick should get a proper cinema release, rather than only being available on the TV screen to Netflix subscribers.
I shall keep my eyes open for a post-awards appearance on the big screen.

I'm aware of it; it's been on my Netflix watch list for a while. I didn't realise it was a 'good' film until it was nominated though. I thought it was another direct to video effort that Netflix had picked up like most of their stuff.

Been watching The Last Of Us - it's been cracking, but it's a bit grim to say the least. I only have a passing knowledge of the game it's based on.

Had anyone here heard of the 2022 film 'All Quiet on the Western Front' until it got nominated for all the awards? I hadn't. I'm not aware it ever got shown in the Cardiff cinemas. I had, but mostly in terms of discussion of whether it was a better or worse adaptation than the preceding one. I'd not seen any real discussion on its merits as a film in its own right. I've not been up to watching anything terribly deep or clever this last week, but as I was stuck in my bed and have Crunchyroll on my tablet I did stroll straight from SSSS Gridman to SSSS Dynazenon, Studio Trigger's animated follow-ups to the Gridman tokusatsu show from decades back. Surprised to see how good they both where. I remember a bit of chatter on social media spotting Easter Eggs and injoke references in Gridman, but I don't recall anyone commenting on the fact that they are both rather good shows! The animation is great, both in terms of having a lot of money per second and in terms of being very well directed. I loved the fact that the action choreagraphy actually leans into handling the characters and monsters as if they are being portrayed by suit actors - only faster and more fluid. The love of both Ultra- and Sentai-style Tokusatsu really shows through. Surprised by both shows being more mature (in a good way) than I expected. Rather than being tonally the same as the goofy kids Tokusastsu show they are following on from, they feel more like they are aimed at the same kids only now that they are older. Both shows engage with some stronger themes - isolation, depression and self-hatred, trauma - through the lens of the genre and it gives them an interesting texture. They are also smart enough to be punchy, snappy and well-paced. No 52 episodes over two years, or 25 episodes(maybe 11 good ones) for the SSSS shows. They are both 12 episodes, letting them get in and do their thing and then have a satisfying ending long before they wear out their welcome. Wish I'd known that these were up to snuff before now, but a nice discover nevertheless! Curious to see how the forthcoming team-up/crossover movie "Gridman Universe" comes out. Karl

Addendum - because I forgot. I do love how the SSSS shows handle their Easter Eggs and references. None of them matter, are important - or even particularly drawn attention to. They are present in a scene, but have no special relevance and if you don't get them you have missed nothing. For example, both shows have a cameo appearance in gag scenes from a character played by, and drawn to resemble, the original lead from Gridman - but in both cases the scene is also funny if you don't know who they are. If you happen to know then that is a second, bonus, joke. But the scene still works if you don't.
That is how it is done.

'In the Loop': rather poor in comparison to 'In the Thick Of It'. Not helped by having actors from the show playing different characters but Capaldi is still Tucker. But confusing.
