That makes V even stranger. IV has such a good, coherent soundtrack then V is Elton John, MC Hammer and others.
Also a strange experience to see Stallone age through 40 years as the same character in just acouple of days.
Its really a much better series than I always imagine it to be. Even when IV and V are straining the concept they are still pretty decent.

I'm still on this. I think it was in another thread somewhere. I bought a second hand Blu-ray set of the first six. I've done three, every now and again we watch one. I'm not a boxing fan but they're surprisingly engaging films.

Im not a boxing fan either, even in these films if they go on too long I start to lose interest and yet I still enjoy the films.
The timeline between IV and V is really odd. Rockys son goes from 9 to 14 despite the films being set over just a few months. At the time it probably didn't seem much of an issue, but watching them back to back it stands out.
I really enjoyed the first Creed film, despite the title change and equal focus on Creed, its still a Rocky film that could have just as easily been followed by Rocky 8 as Creed 2.

Speaking of timelines, I'm watching Creed II and I think they've pulled a similar move between it and Creed III.

I think this weekend's film will have to be Rocky IV now.
In contrast, I also started on the Rambo series but I've only done two. The first was legitimately good, but the second went downhill a bit.

Never made it through a sports film without losing interest and switching off. Same goes for sport itself, mind you.

As is the one... the one with the baseball and the "if you build it, people will come." Or whatever it was. Darth Vader was in it.

The Gifted: Season 2: The other X-Men adjacent TV series from a while back. About seven episodes into the season and I'm quite enjoying the second season so far. The set-up - the underground mutant railroad versus a Hellfire Club Inner Circle with a more..militant...approach to mutant liberation is a bit more engaging than the first seasons "vs The Feds" set-up in a lot of ways, especially with a the main cast having been split across both sides of the issue. (The show gets some interesting mileage out of adding the Morlocks as a resolutely seperatist group uninterested in living alongside humanity in peace or war too). It is no Legion. But then what is. But as adventure/drama tosh it isn't too bad.

Watched Rocky IV tonight. Still enjoying these although the plot twist at the 30 minute mark was easy to see coming. That soundtrack is such a prototype for tftm! Also, household robots? Anyone would think robots were a big thing for kids in 1985...

Started watching 'Citadel', the new spy drama on Amazon Prime. Basically the Russo brothers' international variation on the idea of Kingsman, starring Richard Madden and Stanley Tucci. It makes a strong start!

Access to Apple TV means a rewatch of Ted Lasso.
First time I watched the first two seasons I was in the grip of covid, happily it seems my fried brain was not lying to me, it is a very good show.

One episode from the end of The Gifted, and I do think that the second season is definitely stronger than the first. Part of this is the fact that on one hand it gives up any pretence of trying to be "proper drama" and goes full-bore melodrama. Lovers and families divided, people making operatically wrong choices in the name of protecting "their people", and lots of emotionally tortured scenes of people lost in their own internal pain or talking about their shattered feelings. On the other hand it also is prepared to smack you over the head with a blunt and heavy allegory just in case you missed that this is at least partly about oppressed minorities and the horrible things their oppressors do. (Virtually jetissoning the Government agency "Sentinel Services" as a main antagonist, and replacing them with a version of the Purifiers following the lead of a racist television talk-show host instead of a televangelist actually makes it seem surprisingly relevant to the modern day. Which is a rather depressing realisation.).
They seem to have leaned into the limited budget by making the second season much more expansive in terms of the inner life of the characters and in the relationships between them. And I genuinely quite like that the central struggle is not mainly about getting humans to "tolerate" mutants, but it is about how people respond to the hatred they are offered. Do you fight for a separate homeland born from the blood of your oppressor? Do you struggle to get as many of your people away to a less racist country whilst hoping that one day the humans might just stop killing you and leave you alone? Or do you secede quietly, and carve out an existence in the empty interstices of human society? (Really, the Morlocks are the best thing that the season added - a group of Mutants who reject fighting humans, but also reject contact entirely is an excellent dramatic device).
Don't get me wrong, there is no money here - and some of the action sequences are a bit shonky compared to the Fox movies. But I'd argue that in terms of the actual feel of some of my favourite era's of the X-men, and engaging with the underlying themes of the comics "The Gifted" makes a better stab than some of the movies managed. (Although, Logan would actually fit really well as the "bad ending route" from "The Gifted". Perhaps better than it feels like it fits with the rest of the movies.
No, it still isn't as brilliant, inventive and unhinged as Legion. But it was never going to be - above average action-drama fare though really.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Witch from Mercury is continuing strongly in the second half of the season. Fantastic emotional gutpunch from the ending of this weeks episode - and nicely structured so that we go into the post-Golden Week skip week straight of that crushing emotional blow. Nicely done Team GWitch, nicely done.
