Ongoing analysis of THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN has revealed that it is in fact a secret Doctor Who spin-off set during the Time War. -Ralph Ralph, Phil has hacked your account and is spouting madness under your name.

Tokusatsu. This year I am watching Tokusatsu. Specifically, superhero Toku shows. I've taken a detour this year into Sentai and Kamen Rider and I am finding it rather refreshing. Evil villains which maniacal plans, brave heroes who leap into danger to save others, bright colours, humour, and headlong, breathless pacing... It is exactly the sort of stuff I enjoy in my superhero media that western Superhero shows and movies haven't really been giving me. There is a kind of "commitment to the bit" that reminds me a lot of Doctor Who at its best as well.
I was feeling pretty "eh" about superhero media at the beginning of the year, but I do feel like my interest has been rekindled by taking a step aside from the American tradition. It is nice to have something a bit different, a change of flavours in my televisual diet.

Great excitement in THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN. Turns out Bigfoot is real and is a robot played by Andre the Giant who protects space aliens in their underground volcano base.

Bodies:
A Netflix mini-series, based on a Vertigo (iirc) comic. Several detectives lives are impacted by an investigation into the mysterious discovery of a naked corpse in a London alley. The catch is that each detective is in different time periods - one in 2023, one in 1941, and one in 1890... Three investigations, three detectives, three different centuries, one victim... It is a clever premise for a series, and one that unfolds beautifully as it goes on. One of the better shows I've seen which has time at the core of its premise. Three different leads who bring some interesting levels and shading to characters who each struggle with being outsiders in their own particular millieu. Plot is well crafted - it only just falls short of Netflix Germany's Dark in terms of how meticulously everything fits together. (Not a complaint, Dark was a masterpiece of precision structural engineering in its writing, to fall a little short of that is still to be impressively rigorous). All told this is an impressive piece of work - and at eight episodes it doesn't ever risk outstaying its welcome.
Well worth giving a go.

I watched the first half of it, but was unwell and struggling to follow it so must get around to rewatching it.
Large chunks of it were filmed in Hull which was a fun, but distracting game of spot the location.

Finally got round to the last Hellraiser reboot.
Solid 6.5 out of 10, light years ahead of any of the films in recent years, liked the new Lead Cenobite, the reuse of lines from the previous films, and music cues hurt it more than helped I would say.

Fuck sakes, Fred!
Now I know why there isn't a season 6...

Kamen Rider W has turned out to be one of my favourite shows I've seen this year. Managing both fine, fine melodrama and some wonderful sillyness (sometimes in the very same moment) it is just a marvelously unself-concious bit of superheroic nonsense. The fact that one of the leads _thinks_ he is some sort of hard-boiled PI, whilst having such a good heart that almost anyone who knows him declares that he is more like "half-boiled" just endears it to me further.
It is probably a stronger show than the first Kamen Rider series I watched. It won't dethrone that as my favourite, that has an unfair advantage on several levels anyway, but it is a great deal of fun.
Sure, an expensive Disney mini-series might be able to look more "muted" and "realistic", but on the other hand there is something wonderfully exuberant about an oddly costumed bug-mans fighting odd looking monsters on a random Tokyo waterside footpath.

It's just turned up on Paramount+ too. I'm determined to get my daughter to watch it, leveraging the fact she's a fan of both Star Trek Voyager and Friends.

Started watching Star Trek: Prodigy on Christmas Day. I am now ten episodes in - an absolutely blistering pace of consumption for me. Good god, what a fantastic show! It feels very new and fresh - very much its own animal compared to other ST shows of the Streaming Generation. Genuinely enjoying this loads - good stories, with some very uplifting central themes. A very likeable core set of characters as well, whom it is a joy to watch grow over the first half-season.
It is beautifully designed too! I think the Protostar may be my favourite Star Trek ship in a good many years. Yes, more than the Titan-B. Yes, more than the Star Trek:Online designs that made it into Picard S2 and S3. And Yes, even more than the Shenzhou from ST: Discovery.
Main Title music is fantastic as well. Jaunty and adventurous, and ending with a lovely flourish, it has a real energy to it.
I think that this might turn out to my my favourite Star Trek spin-off since Deep Space 9.

Fred Frieberger was a fucking hack! Why did he have to kill off THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN too?? Damn his eyes! It's a tosh show but has a certain internal logic and then Fred appears and it turns to SHITE.

Spent the day yesterday watching most of the second couer of Star Trek: Prodigy. I'm not sure that I am enjoying the second half quite as much as the first, In think that it is less "exploring the unknown" and more "exploring things the audience is already familiar with". It is still really good television though - I think my favourite episodes have been the one where Kate Mulgrew gets to play three different characters in twenty minutes (and knocks all three out of the park), the neat twist on a holodeck episode, and the episode that dealt with folks backstories. I've got the last two episodes pencilled in for this evening - going to "special double-length conclusion" event them.
Prodigy had interested me from when I heard the premise, mostly in terms of being something that if it worked well could be great, but would be very easy to get wrong. They really have done wonders with it though. Of the three Star Trek shows I've seen of this generation I genuinely think it might be the most interesting, and definitely the most sure-footed. Much, much more assured that I expected it to be, such a pleasant surprise.
Is there a physical media release for it? I think I could go adding this to my stash.

I also have spent the last two days watching Prodigy, but found the second half better than the first.
I think mostly down to the characters developing over the season.
Hologram Janeway is a significantly better written charcter than real Janeway on Voyager ever was.
