Wait. It's only for licensed premises? That's utterly idiotic!
The one cafe I use does table service just fine as part of their safety measures (and staff have been masked up and serve at arm's length). I've done table service in McDonald's in the past.
EDIT: Do you have a source for this clarification? Is it on gov.uk?

It shouldn't be one-size-fits-all because one size doesn't fit all. The system should be whatever works best (and safest) for a given venue.

Getting a bit off the topic of food to a more general point, it is a shame they don't seem capable of foreseeing/planning the rule-changes longer in advance so that people and businesses have more time to respond to them. It does seem very much like making it up as they go along.

We had table service at several McDonalds around here pre-COVID. How did people who wanted a takeaway without sitting down get their food? Maybe McDonalds is a bad example, but in cities chain coffee shops at busy times do most of their food to take away and don't have enough space for all their customers to sit down. If customers who just want to point at a sausage roll or sandwich behind the glass and order a coffee to go can only get that food and drink by sitting at a socially distanced table then the amount of trade the shop can do is cut to a fraction of what it would be otherwise and it will become unprofitable. Or else they can get rid of all the tables and just be like a baker's outlet that does hot drinks. But where's the logic in saying a Greggs can't put out a few tables without suddenly having to switch to doing all its trade through table service? I and my colleagues have been puzzling over this for the last few days, until they made the clarification today. They've let businesses invest in the safety systems that work for them up until now, so I'm relieved they're going to continue to do so rather than impose a rule that only makes sense for some. It was never one or the other. That would be nonsense. If you didn't want to eat in you stayed at the counter waiting for your order or went to the drive through exactly as before. It was an easy way of keeping the space at the counter clearer for ordering etc.

It was never one or the other. That would be nonsense. Ah right. That's fine then. But that's the choice coffee shops and fast food outlets thought was being forced upon them this week until government clarified. Discuss fine dinners here! I'd like to be waited on at table in a McDonald's one day. But properly, with a nice printed menu and a waiter offering recommendations. Not ordering through an app. Martin

UGH! Been enjoying M&S breaded mushrooms with sour cream recently. But I bought two packs of Sainsbury's version last week, and I didn't read the small print. GARLIC! Tried a few... awful... all going straight in the bin.
I rarely waste food and hate doing it, but needs must.

Tried a few... awful... all going straight in the bin. This morning I have been mostly panic-buying a tuna melt and two iced lattes at Coffee #1 while reading the i-Weekend, two veggie sausage rolls and a custard slice from the bakery, and three packs of very-low-garlic breaded mushrooms and two of cherry liqueurs from M&S Food. Walk back through the woods, home by 10am, and that's my outing for Saturday done. Martin

I had a KFC Zinger stacker last night - instead of the hash brown you get another bit of chicken and the sauce tasted a wee bit spicier. Enjoyable stuff.

First drink out in 5 months. (Not counting my sister's house.) Was passing my local curry house on way home from office at 5.40pm. It was open. There were no other customers. Familiar staff who I haven't spoken to since pre-lockdown. Lamb biryani with poppadoms to take home. Large Cobra while I wait. Repeat performance of the above on way home tonight. *burp* Only difference tonight was I had to have my large Cobra at a table rather than in the waiting area, and half way through it the waiter came and pointed a ray gun at my forehead that went beep and told him I was 36.3. Asked him if business was going OK. He said not really. Asked him if they would be doing deliveries during the 2-week lockdown. He said yes. Promised to try to order something. Martin

Another visit to local Indian place on way home tonight (fourth visit since the big lockdown), because evening hospitality industry in Wales shutting down again this Friday. Chicken tikka biryani, poppadoms and chutneys to take home, large Cobra while I waited. They say they'll be doing deliveries from Friday, so maybe order one in from them again on a future TMUK Zoom call. Martin
