I tried to explain the joy of Lego to a friend yesterday. She was utterly nonplussed. There was no Lego when she was growing up in India, apparently.

Lego will forever be a fond memory of my childhood. The joy of getting a set for Christmas and building it up, the joy of chewing a brick in your mouth and destroying it and finally the joy of walking barefoot around the house and stepping on a brick.

Lego were fun, and I always dreamed of building a huge lego city for my Transformers to go ape shmit in... Nowadays I also dream of owning the lego star wars fleet... sadly lego has become way too expensive to merit my attention. It is not detailed enough to be that expensive... by the by - did anybody (other than Legios) know that Bandai uses legos as the first step to designing their newest Valkyrie? Pete

Somebody phoned Toys'r'us asking for this last week: shop.lego.com/Product/?p=10143At least, I think it was that one. This one seems to have more play value (and comes with 24 figures) so maybe that's what she was after. -Nick

And also comes with a rather terrifying price point to boot.... It does look rather nice though, perhaps worth the money if you are into that sort of thing. (Mind you, I am a bit of a luddite when it comes to Lego - all these sets with specialised blocks don't really do it for me. I've always loved the challenge of starting with a big pile of generic blocks and trying to work out how close I can get to what I want to build). Karl

That was the fun part of Lego - if you could build a good-looking toy out of the generic bricks you considered yourself a genius, if you couldn't then you could always build your own creation and marvel at the finished work. These specialised blocks that are all prevalent in modern sets do nothing for me. 'Oh, this piece looks like a front bonnet to a car - gosh, I wonder where this piece goes and if I can use it to build a ship with if things go pear-shaped!'

I made spaceships loosely inspired by the X-Bomber from Star Fleet out of Lego many times as a child.
Am I the only one who used the bottom half of Lego people as little goggle-eyes aliens or robots, and the little 2x2 squares with wheels and one tyre removed as little space fighters?

I used to make cargo ships out of spare lego bricks / entire lego sets that I had got bored of and dismantled the original model. I used to have a large blue box full of lego brocks that had three green lego boards as lids for the top that you could build on and that kept me and my brother happy for hours as kids.

I remember building the prison ship as seen in the Zoids comic strip that ran in Secret Wars UK. It was a brick, and often used to land on top of Beast-Man from the He-Man show.

I had a tendency to build swarms of small fighters, and carriers to go with them. The one I most strongly remember was a long carrier built on two on the lego house base-plates, with a pair of outriggers down either side of the hull. The fighters all roosted on the outriggers and the stepped sides of the main ship.
(I think I was influenced by the way that the starlings used to line up along the telephone wire that ran over the back garden to the eaves of the house.)

Apparently I've started buying Lego Space stuff. I wonder where I'm going to put it. In my defence I really didn't think I'd win- that set on Bricklink *starts* at $150 without the extra figures and baseplate. I think Lego Space is starting to appeal to me because it's so much cheaper than the legacy TFs I still fancy for my own use -Nick

Blacktron, M-Tron and Blacktron II were AMAZING. They don't make them like that anymore! I especially loved the Blacktron black uniforms and BLACK visors.* *Not a space nazi

Probably quite economical too They don't make them like that anymore! Yes they do.They totally do.They're just a bit more streamlined now because a few more curved parts have been cast in the intervening years -Nick Is space lego worth anything nowadays, I have tons of complete sets in the attic somewhere Including MOON BASEPLATES! You want crazy prices? After nearly a year from its release, this bad boy is still 80 quid in Toys'r'us down from an eye-watering 100 when it first came out. I saw one built up in a cabinet in the Legoland store and it's pathetically small. These chaps, on the opposite end of the scale, cost me 22 quid on eBay. They're huge, straightforward and fun to put together, each model has bags of character and fun features and the figures that come with them (Darth Vader with the TIE Advance and rebel pilot and R2 unit with the Y-wing) are uniformly brilliant. The only downside is that I now have to get the X-wing, A-wing, B-wing, TIE fighter, bomber, interceptor and Defender and that's going to cost me. Ooh- the Defender's only 29.99 on Amazon... -Nick

That Y-wing is rather nice. (Always liked Y-Wings, and Lego, so combining the two can't really go far wrong).
Having looked at the description of the Home One set I'd agree. Not really worth ninety paper pounds really is it?

Looks like the original Lego Y-Wing to me. By now most of the major ships have been redone several times....
I've got an original A-Wing somewhere

Picked up LEGO Empire rebel troops and snowtrooper battle packs from the wee toy shop in Morningside. Contemplating popping back next week and picking up the small Hoth base tower set to go with them as some research online shows they seem to have it cheaper.
Not wanting to get massively into lego star wars but would like a nice wee Hoth based set-up for the dinner table!

I may have ordered an Echo Lego Base from Toy-Fu, who has provided a chrome Stormtrooper minifigure and Vader. And there my journey into SW Lego shall end.
