I had 7 in mind when I asked the question. It used to be 6 for me: post Apocalypse War, plenty of Ezquerra and Smith Meka-City (271-272) The League of Fatties (273-274) Fungus (275-277) The Game Show Show (278-279) Gunge (280) Destiny's Angels (281-288) Rabid (289) Blobs (290) The Executioner (291-294) Jimps (295) The Night of the Rad-Beast (296-297) The Last Invader (298-299) Shanty Town (300-303) Prezzel Logic (304) Trapper Hag (305-307) The Prankster (308) Starborn Thing (309-314) King of the Road (315) The Stupid Gun (316-318) Condo (319-321) It also contains the first Dredd I ever read. 8 is the only other serious contrender I think: Many Unhappy Returns (376) Dredd Angel (377-383) Gator (384-386) Question of Judgement (387) Error of Judgement (388) A Case For Treatment (389) The Wally Squad (390-392) City of the Damned (393-406) The Hunters Club (407-411) Monsteroso (412) Spugbug (413) Juve's Eyes (414-415) Sunday Night Fever (416-418) Hagatha Smeld (419) Aftermath Ron Reagan (420) Thirteenth Assessment (421) Casey's Day Out (422) 99 Red (423) Dredd/Angel (first Rico!) and City of the Dammed, two all time faves. But a lot of the rest is weaker.

I think 387-389 is one of the standout little sequences in Dredd, and pretty much laid the foundations for a lot of material to follow.

14? But that's effectively one story Tale of the Dead Man (662-668) By Lethal Injection (669-670) Rights of Succession (671) Dear Annie (672-673) Necropolis (674-699)

But what a story.
Carlos on absolute fire doing more than half a year's worth of Dredd and painted too!

Agreed on both points. Question/Error/Case was not lumped in with the weaker stuff in my head but rather was the exception.

Sorry to hear about this. I loved his Anderson, the possessed child storyline was fantastic, and of course his sterling work on Bad Company and Rogue Trooper.

Then it branches out a bit. Shamballa? seems early for treading those waters. But you can't beat a bit of Arthur Ranson, even if the double page spreads will get lost in the crack. I'm subbed now. Waiting for 3 & 4 and the mug in the post.

Waiting for 3 & 4 and the mug in the post. The 2000ad Thrill Cast talked about The World of Judge Dredd being one of the core strands of the collection, so we will get things like this, Devlin Waugh all through the run. Origins, Shamballa, Mandroid are the next three. Andy

I think the various themed sections are on one of the promo sheets that came with one of the books. I like the idea, I think this could be a really nicely rounded collection of the best Dredd world stories and the quality of the books is great. But with the fifth release they'll still be trying to pick up subscribers, and Shamballa seems a bit esoteric to draw people in for the long haul.

I tried to re-appraise the last Dredd movie ( I thought it was crap the first time) but ugh, gave up partway through. It's the direction that kills it: so flat and lifeless. Scenes that should be tense often have the camera pointing the wrong way, action scenes comes from the school of 'point and shoot' and it's just not interesting at all. It doesn't help that the soundtrack seems to belong to a far more kinetic film, which just draws attention to the camera vaguely sitting there or mildly bobbing about. Awful.

Well fingers crossed we get Norm on Dredd next year.
Shame he didn't do one of the Dredd/Batman crossovers. Think that would have been immense.

I didn't appreciate John Cooper as a younger reader of 2000ad, but as I grew older I did enjoy his work. A sad loss.

His Dredd isn't his best work, he just doesn't get the helmet quite right. I can remember reading the lone sov soldier story as a youngster and thinking something wasn't quite right.
He's a much better fit on Armitage later on.
Very distinctive face style. I'm sure I've seen him do Battle or something else as a youth.
