They do seem to have the right idea unlike Marvel's system.
Could be tempted - especially as they are doing an archive, and as you say old progs take up space!

I do think that their business model (selling instead of renting content) is much more appealing than Marvels. I probably won't be taking advantage of it to be honest - I'm cutting back my spending on periodicals more than a little - but I do think they have their heads screwed on right.

Judge Dredd - Origins.
Proof positive that nobody writes Dredd quite like John Wagner. A different sort of "epic" if you will compared to some of the ones he's been responsible for in the past. I know it had some criticism for the way it was told in 2000ad given the break of a few weeks while Carlos was moving house and behind schedule.
Dredd at his finest as we get the origins of Fargo and the justice system and the Atomic Wars fleshed out and we see some of Bad Bob Booth in the past and not to spoil things he shows up again now. Because Booth's character was already established in The Cursed Earth the rather pointed satire on Bush jnr doesn't feel to heavy-handed.
Fargo's an interesting look at a slightly more human Dredd, without the flaws of either Rico (original) or Kraken. The mutant Fargo clan as well were an enjoyable addition and the triggering of the latest direction in Dredd, with him looking at repealing the anti-mutant laws.
I can't help but feel reading it that Wagner is gearing up eventually for Dredd to be killed. Given that there are seven replacements in various stages of development and we have already had Judge Rico (the new one) hold his own and have several stories on his own it's not necessarily a bad thing. The irony is that he reversed Johnny Alpha's death saying it was a big mistake.
Well worth reading. The prologue has splendidly moody art by Kev Walker and of course the main story is by the master of Judge Dredd artwork - Carlos Ezquerra, nuff-said!

I'm well behind on my Dredds only having volumes 1-4.
Strontium Dog is amazing though - four meaty books almost entirely composed of Carlos Ezquerra artwork. Not that Colin MacNeil and Simon Harrison (who do sizeable bits of Book 4 are any slouches). Indeed Harrison's work is brilliant and I wish he was still in comics.

Carlos E is the man. His Dredd is superb. Even 30 years later they still come back to him to draw the really big stories.
2nd Fave Dredd artist ? Steve Dillon - who's work was the first Dredd I saw (Trapper Hag pt 2) He's not done as much as some others but what he has done (bits of Block Mania, Trapper Hag, Curse of the Werewolf, his bits of City of the Dammed) is brilliant.

Yeah Carlos is superb. Dillon's Dredd is much under-appreciated I feel. His Dredd chin is superb definitely one of the best.
I'd love to see Ennis and Dillon take on a Dredd tale again. I know Ennis' run on Dredd was a bit patchy but together I'm sure they'd manage to do something good.

I suspect the Strontium Dog collections could well end up at Phil towers too. Nemesis I liked when younger but is a bit tioo mystical for my liking now.
What's the state of robo hunter being collected ? I'd like to read all of Play It Again Sam and the Slaying Of Sam Slade

Judge Dredd Complete Case Files 3: Now this is the stuff, this is when the Dredd strip really started cooking, finding that classic balance of satire and extreme violence! Loads of splendid art from Ron Smith and Brian Bolland (back when he could be arsed to do sequential work). Also: Walter's memoirs down the laundrette with the other robots damn near had me pissing myself.

It does seem to run out of steam at the end getting by on the strength of some wonderfully demented artwork from John Hicklenton. The first nemesis collection is well worth getting though. Kevin O'Neill and Bryan Talbot along with Jesus Redondo, all of them doing a bang up job on the artwork. Also Hammerstein has never been as well written outside of the 1985 2000ad annual as he was here in the Gothic Empire stories. Andy |

In other news, currently making my way through Strontium Dog: Search/Destroy Agency Files Volume 1. Splendid stuff. Very rough and ready at this early stage but the glimmers of future greatness are there, and Wulf and the Gronk are tops. -Ralph Strontium Dog really picks up when it jumps to 2000ad. JUDGE DREDD: ORIGINS - In which we learn more about how the system of Judges came to be. It's one of those pieces of backstory that we never really needed to know more about for the series to work. The bits and bobs of info over the years always built up a more exciting picture in our imaginations. The way it is presented here is more of an enormous info dump than a functioning story in itself.
However, it just about gets away with it. I don't think Wagner and Ezquerra could do a bad Dredd story if they tried so even though my brain was often screaming: 'this is just plot, there is no story!' I was nonetheless entertained. Its main purpose seems to be setting up some future mega-epic and could be read as paving the way to write Joe Dredd out of the series. I did get that feeling from the ending. It does have the air of the first act in a three act story. I'm not up on current 2000AD. Anyone know of the ending of 'Origins' has been followed up on yet?

Yes, the Mutant question has been addressed which I think is Act two effectively and I agree it's leaning towards writing out Joe and replacing him outright with Rico, who seems to have been well received.

Slaine - Warriors Dawn.
The early stories written by Pat Mills, art by Angie Kincaid, Massimo Belardinelli and Mick McMahon.
This is the Pat Mills I remember. Excellent pacey stories which draw you into the series. Art wise you have Mick McMahon at his best and experimental. The late Massimo Belardinelli's well rendered artwork is as fun as always. He does one of the best warp spams you'll see. Angie Kincaid's art is pedestrian by these standards but thankfully it's only for one story and it's right at the start.
Well worth getting.

3 trades yesterday: Judge Dredd 4 and Judge Dredd 10
Been continuing my Classic Dredd reading. Some of the one issue stuff is great, had forgotton how much humour there was. Nice to see how some of the stuff I'd only read in compilation fits into the overall tale of Dredd. ot Vs 4-10 with 1-3 en route.
I've not read most of these since first publication, but the Dredd sucked me in - been dipping and read some of Judge Child, Fink, Pirates of the Black Atlantic and Atlantis. Had forgotton quite how good and funny the war world segments of Judge Child were.

Judge Dredd Case Files V11 - they've reformatted the cover style to include colour (ahead of going colourt with the next volume - see Amazon) and have finally got the correct Dredd logo including the shield for the U. Contains Oz - which I'd never read in full before. Bit surprised not to see Kraken in it !
Judge Dredd Origins I'd read bits of this in the shops and wanted to read it all. nice little tale tying together all the parts of the Dredd story

Kraken doesn't appear until a story called Bloodline, which should be in the next volume - illustrated by Will Simpson.
