Oh wow, that's awesome.
ARE YOU LOOKING FUNPUB? SEE WHAT WE COULD HAVE HAD?
I would buy that in a heartbeat. Beyond Takara though, who does the necessary level of remoulding in their exclusives to get it right? Surely something like this would sell more boxes than Victorion.
Look at that RiD Prime. There's a hall of fame figure right there. Gonna have to get mine out again now.

Not the direction I'd go at all, but great proof of concept for my basic idea.

I see that they used all red limbs to give the supermode the Super Fire Convoy appearance, which... fair enough, but I think I'd prefer RID characters as the limbs!

Aye. It makes more sense. And basing the main robot on supermode, with the combiner based on Omega Prime make the most sense.

Hotspot has more overall resemblance to Super Fire Convoy than the little Fire Convoy. Especially with the ladder on his back. The profile fits super better as well. Overall, it would be considerably less work to make a passing Super mode, than normal, for FP's kind of budget. Also, Omega Prime, already a combiner, makes more sense than the combined mode being Super.

Oh, I know you're right and that the Super Mode is an objectively better fit, it's just that I really really like Fire Convoy's head/chest design and was a bit more meh on the super mode.

I like the smaller robots chest design more too. Have torso mode as super fire convoy snd then groove decoed to look like omega primes chest. You could then gsve two sets of limbs to reflect each version.

Would splash the cash if Hasbro did this.

Yeah, but they were TOLD to. They're far from infallible, but this one is on Hasbro.

I thought Hasbro just told them to use Combiner Wars, not to do with them. But I dont think FP had a choice in doing Beast Wars from the customer perspective. Pre Beast remains one of their strongest sets and I would be very surprised to find a stronger RID/CR than BW sub fandom. That doesnt excuse them for bodging the boxset so badly though (well maybe, Ravage is the only one I have no hope of working thanks to the mould they chose) Plus Hasbro are probably very happy to keep any toy with a possible Optimus Prime repaint in their back pocket. Just in case.

It sounds to me like it was a no-win situation. Hasbro insisted on lining all product up this year, meaning repaints of figures already repainted dozens of times. and if they hadn't gone for the Beat Era, folks would have been pissed that nothing was happening for the 20th anniversary. Personally, I've never once seen an entire set I'd want, so I'm pretty happy to just track down whichever couple actually work for me after the fact, just like any other year. I mean, if they had gone the other way you could have had that lovely Optimus and shitty everyone else, rather than here we have (so far) a lovely Tarantulas, an *interesting* Ramhorn, and shitty everyone else. It's strikes and gutters no matter what they do.
I'm done with the derailment now. Sorry.

Generally agree. 2006 pre Beasts are the only year that has ever felt like set that needed to be complete. Laserbeak and buzzsaw maybe arent that important but dont feel out of place. Rattrap is probably the weaskest of the toys but works well enough.
2008s SG is a decent little set. The 2011 animated set too, well at least the Boxset, the add ons are pretty random.

Does anyone know if the head of a CHUG Prowl would be able to be popped onto the head of a CHUG Mirage?
Thinking of customing up a wee Machine Wars line following my acquisition of some of the Botcon ones from Nick.
Thinking a GDO Hotspot would make for a nice MW Prime.

Andy I would say not as the Mirage head fits really snugly in place for the transformation in a specially shaped alcove (I seem to recall anyway, I dont' have either any more)

I'll try and remember to check later, but I doubt it will be a straight swap, but you should be able to glue Prowls head on to Mirages neck somehow.
