Headmasters, because that's what I had as a child. Scorponok big! Snapdragon dinosaur! Nightbeat cool! I did have Actionmasters later, but I've never considered them as a binary bonding type of partnership.

The figures can ride in the vehicle/beast modes. Best articulated of the Nebulon figures. And they came first! I was always disapointed the Targetmasters couldn't ride in the vehicle. Both they and the Powermasters use the same mode to work with both robot & vehicle mode (not that the TM guns are a bad thing) Yes you can use the PM's with the two larger base mode characters and sit them in Overlord but these are top of the range toys and there's several toys bellow these that mitigate against that. All Headmasters can sit their Nebulon within. I liked the Action Masters bringing back older characters but beyond those I never really took to them. Never owned a Brainmaster or Breastforce but the Breastforce chests are a little small, fiddly and look like armour in all modes.

I think Headmasters because of the added interactivity of them riding in the vehicle modes too. Having little cockpits that you can drive about in is cool, rather than just clipping on to the outside somewhere. As a kid, having figures drive about in vehicles always added something extra. I don't like that the head HAD to detatch to transform, they could have made them so that the head had somewhere to go as part of the transformation too. I liked Targetmasters, but they were a lot simpler and couldn't sit down (I judged things a lot on whether they could sit down) and Powermasters were good but their knees went sideways Also an engine can only be so exciting. I liked the concept of a man transforming into SOMETHING that actually clipped into a little springy platform that sunk down. Maybe if they weren't just engines but other things too, like radars or weapons platforms; I'm sure there's a lot you can do with that concept, and it would help make each vehicle even more modifiable. I don't really count Action Masters as binary bonded; are they supposed to be? I liked the spring-loaded accessories, but they were too big to really fit well with the figures. Stuff like the exo armour was a great step forward though, I wish we had more 'armour up' modes I love the Brainmaster mechanism, of the little lift that automatically raises the figure into position, however the little figure themselves look terrible with tiny thin arms and legs, and enormous square body. Minicons are a mixed bag. I like when they activate gimmicks, less so when they're just randomly stuck on figures. The best ones are the ones that turn into weapons too. Not the new clear ones I hasten to add, they try to do too many things and end up looking like nothing. The axe one is good though.

The question doesn't actually say that Actionmasters are binary bonded. Mini-Cons are also not binary bonded because they can generally be used with any compatible Transformer.

I initially voted Powermasters, but Phil's and Blueshift's comments have swayed me.
I liked the Powermasters as, at the time, they gave off a kind of "Soundwave ejecting cassettes" vibe which appealed to me.

Now a Power or Targetmaster that can sit properly inside the vehicle mode and we're laughing.......
I think I mentioned when I did "How to improve PM Prime" that I'd ball joint Hi-Q's hips & knees to achieve this.

I think I mentioned when I did "How to improve PM Prime" that I'd ball joint Hi-Q's hips & knees to achieve this. You don't even need a ball joint in both hips and knees, just put a swivel joint at the top of each hip and it can fold up in the same way, and still have the same stiff 80s articulation

I'm thinking at that size a ball joint might be a bit easier to do and a bit more durable.

Well yes, I was thinking more 'of the time' though when balljoints were relatively rare.

As self-appointed President of the Equality for Action Masters Partners Now Foundation, I am highlighting the use of "Headmasters", "Targetmasters" and "Powermasters" to describe the partners / weapons / accessories of those toys.
And yet the partners of Action Masters cannot be described as "Action Masters".
This is Actionmasterpartnerism in action and it will not be tolerated! Say YES to Proposition 33!

Don't get me started on that one! I just logged out to get on with my accounts! Referring to Nebulans as X-masters really gets on my nerves. The Transformers are the X-masters, their heads etc are their binary-bonded partners!

I voted for the Nebulans binary-bonded to Transformers who change into guns, weapons and other projectile launching devices.
I liked those chunky guns, and they were all different, whereas all the Power/Headmaster partners transformed the same way.
Seriously, modern toy making technology could do wonderous things for a Power/Headmaster toy.

I know, and we've already had Targetmasters in CHUG. Why not Headmasters or Powermasters?

We should start a petition for a new Getaway toy. Or a proper combining Dreadwing set, that'd be nice.

I've always wanted a Getaway. But can I find one on eBay that hasn't yellowed? It's possible, mine hasn't yellowed. You'll have a harder time finding one whose facepaint hasn't scraped off due to his transformation though. I think even mind did, and I was ultra-careful with my toys. He is a nice figure though, if you excuse the rather lazy legs-transformation.

I had another look on eBay this afternoon, but all the cheap ones are yellow. And the boxed ones are waaayyyy too much money.

I sold one before Christmas that was minty, I had planned to keep it as the face was unchipped unlikey my childhood one but in the end I took the money.
Headmasters, the useful robot mode articulation even on the smaller ones was a major bonus. The downside was that if Hardhead was in robot mode Duros really needed to be working as a head or it all got a bit silly.
Powermasters and Target masters didn't suffer from the headmaster problem, but until Universe Cyclonus targetmasters were all bricks. Power masters were always good and once Overlord came along they even had somewhere to lie down and a private buggy.
Brainmasters would get my vote if they weren't quite so ugly.
Actionmasters I loved the partners that had some kind of personality, the animals and mainframe droid, even exosuit like ones Sideswipe and others had. A rhino turning into a gun had at least as much play value as a Targetmaster.
Breatforce funky little animals but turning into a chest is just a touch odd and maybe lame.
Minicon. Don't like. Except the new PCC ones but only because they are like targetmasters.
Erm. I don't know which is best.

I've voted Powermasters, based on their use in Masterforce (though OK, they were Godmasters, not Powermasters).
My view (both before and after reading today's threads) is that Action-Master, Headmaster and so on are designations applied to robot life-forms alive with the Creation Matrix. They may make use of transforming equipment, and may be bonded to Nebulans, but those pieces of equipment and Nebulans are not themselves Action-Masters or Headmasters.
Lord Zarak is not a Headmaster. If he were, his head would come off and transform into something. Blaster's Flight-Pack is not an Action-Master. If it were, it would not be able to transform (but would have once been able to do so, before it became an Action-Master, and would regain the ability to transform - and cease being an Action-Master - if infused with new Nucleon).
Equal rights are all very well - a Nebulan can become a Headmaster when it takes its head off, and an Action-Master's pal can become an Action-Master when it ceases to be able to transform.
BUT! A flaw in my logic. In Masterforce, the humans refer to themselves as Headmasters and Godmasters. However, their robot partners are non-sentient, so when combined the human essentially becomes the robot as a person, so that's a bit different.
Hmmm. Semantics.
I think that if you shared minds with a robot you'd start speaking sometimes as if you were that robot, even when separate from it.

HA HA HA HA!!! BREASTFORCE!!!! HA HA HA HAAAAAAA!!!!!!
I STILL LAUGH WHEN I SEE THAT!
Should I vote form them because the names makes me laugh? No, prob shouldn't. It'd be unprofessional.
So, er, hmm. This phase of G1 came alittle too late for the wow factor for me. The big wow happened with the original lines. I regarded this eara as a step away (in the wrong direction) from what I imagined Transformers to be. So, although I've come to appreciated them, they don't hold much 'Pazzazz' for me. As a concept, Headmasters have a wierd element to them, I mean IT'S THEIR HEADS!!! Transforming guns is fairly cool, but I've never been a fan of too many humany characters in Transformers stories. I like robot action. So, I'l have to plump for Action Masters. 'Cos although I was never too keen on them not Transforming, I would pretend that they can still Transform, and the joy was the fact that they're driving MACHINES OF WAR! I don't see why Transformers can't operate vehicles/mobile weaponary within the toy range. Tis cool.

Really tricky... On the one hand Headmasters do detach and drive the vehicles and show stats on the robot chest, but Powermasters unlock the transformation and Targetmasters change into guns... Hrm.
Why has that not been a PTH-master where he has 3 Nebulans that does each?
