1- The Kings Speech 2- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows pt 2 3- Captain America 4 The Lion King THe 3D is pretty redundant and actually hurts the film in some of the close ups when efforts to three dimensionalise faces don't always work. But that doesn't stop the film being every bit as good as it was when I last watched in at cinema 16 years ago. 5- Tron Legacy 6- HP and the Prisoner of Azkaban 7- HP an the Order of the Phoenix 8- Xmen First Class 9- Thor 10- Tangled 11- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt 1 12- Attack the Block 13- HP and the Goblet of Fire 14- Paul 15- Tower Heist I enjoyed it, but still aren't sure exactly what it was. Felt like a comedy except it wasn't funny. Not in a jokes falling flat sort of way, there just wasn't a huge amount of jokes in it. It wasn't a thriller or an action movie or a buddy movie though it contained all those elements. It wasn't even a rip off of the Ocean films. 16- Transformers DOTM 17- Tintin I'll admit I fell asleep during it but that was more to extreme exhaustion than the film itself. However the middle section did begin to loose my attention, in the same way the Indiana films do (I seem to be one of the few that just don't quite get those films, I like them I just don't often make it through one in one go) 18- True Grit 19- Black Swan 20- Super 8 - my mood has changed and after rewatching Tangled I recently I realised its pretty awesome. So Tangled has replaced Super 8 21- Cars 2 22 - Jonny English I only saw it because I arrived late for Tintin. Er, it's far better than I expected, which in truth can be read as very faint praise, but actually I did quite enjoy most of it. My tolerance for slap stick not preformed by Leslie Neilsen is pretty low, but English contained a lot less than expected. 23- Cowboys and Aliens 24- HP and the Chamber of secrets 25- Battlefield LA 26- Unknown 27- I am Number 4 28- Your Highness 29- Meet the Parents
I don't have a problem with the motion capture films, but there has yet to be one that has really work. The Zememkis? ones had the bladder loosening dead eyes that only BK Ratchet can match. Beuwolf to was lacking something. Tintin worked far better because they stayed just on the cartoon side of the divide which at the moment is where it belongs. Except that the skill of the animators at Pixar and other studios really makes the technique pointless in animation, but till it works for live action thats where its going to be seen.
One day it will be used to bring dead actors back to the screen or allow older actors to perform as their younger selves, like it was for Arnies cameo in the last Terminator film, but on a bigger scale.
And I agree with Ralph, personally I think Lucas is just waiting for the technology to be cracked. Didn't he say something similar about seeing Jurassic Parks effects and knowing he could finally make the prequels?
And a someone who can still class them selves as a professional rotoscoper, theres nothing wrong with it! Most films today couldn't be made without roto and as an art form, Snow White and Lord of the Rings speak for themselves. A Scanner Darkly also visually looks good even though I haven't ever watched it.

37th* cinema trip of the year this evening was to see the one-day special re-release of Ghostbusters. Brought back memories of seeing it on the big screen back in (erk) 1984. Still good stuff and quite a large crowd turned out for it. Hurray.
-Ralph *36 films, but saw Thor twice

1) Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy 2) The Three Musketeers 3) X-Men: First Class 4) True Grit 5) Captain America 6) Thor 7) Thirteen Assassins 8) Limitless - Hung around a single interesting idea and has an decent run at the logical consequences of it. Becomes slightly unfocused in its last third but a creditable attempt nevertheless. 9) Troll Hunter 10) Real Steel 11) Ides of March 12) Battle: Los Angeles 13) Cowboys vs Aliens 14) Source Code 15) My Week with Marilyn - tries hard, and the period is well realised. There are some good performances, shame that the leads don't quite hold the attention as well as some of the nominal supporting cast

1) The Awakening: This could have been a bog standard haunted house ghost story but turns out to be an absorbing meditation on loss and loneliness with first class performances, direction and cinematography. Excellent choice of time and place really flow naturally into the story. Genuinely unnerving and avoids cheap scares. Instant classic. I got so into it that I forgot I needed to pee! 2)The Three Muskateers (2011). 3) The King's Speech. 4) X-Men: First Class 5) True Grit. 6) Captain America: The First Avenger. 7) Thor. 8) The Smurfs. 9) Real Steel. 10) 13 Assassins. 11) The Troll Hunter. 12) Limitless. 13) Battle Los Angeles. 14) Source Code. 15) Footloose (2011). 16) Ghostbusters (re-release). 17) The Conspirator. 18) The Adjustment Bureau. 19) The Ides of March. 20) Conan the Barbarian (2011). 21) Attack the Block. 22) Jurassic Park (re-release) 23) Contagion. 24) The Eagle. 25) Apollo 18. 26) Unknown. 27) Fast Five. 28) The Way. 29) In Time. 30) Transformers: Dark of the Moon. 31) The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn. 32) Sucker Punch. 33) Super 8. 34) Rise of the Planet of the Apes. 35) Cowboys & Aliens. 36) Justice: pees away an interesting premise, January Jones is wasted and Nic Cage is woefully miscast. 37) Green Lantern. 38) Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. 39) Immortals: Dreadful. Dreadful!

Nice period detail and Kenneth Brannagh or Judi Dench steal the screen whenever they are on. 24) Contagion. 25) The Eagle. 26) Apollo 18. 27) Unknown. 28) Fast Five. 29) The Way. 30) In Time. 31) Transformers: Dark of the Moon. 32) The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn. 33) Sucker Punch. 34) Super 8. 35) Rise of the Planet of the Apes. 36) Cowboys & Aliens. 37) Justice. 38) Green Lantern. 39) Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. 40) Immortals.

Or does he? Rivetting performances and clever use of sound make for a good story well told. Won't be to everyone's tastes though: a few walkouts and played to a small crowd on a Saturday night. 17) Ghostbusters (re-release). 18) The Conspirator. 19) The Adjustment Bureau. 20) 50/50: Mis-sold as a comedy when it's really a drama with comedic elements. Gets by on a charming central performance and avoids the usual mawkishness you would expect with a film like this by using a carefully handled tone. Not bad. 21) The Ides of March. 22) Conan the Barbarian (2011). 23) Attack the Block. 24) Jurassic Park (re-release). 25) My Week With Marilyn. 26) Contagion. 27) The Eagle. 28) Apollo 18. 29) Unknown. 30) Fast Five. 31) The Way. 32) In Time. 33) Transformers: Dark of the Moon. 34) The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn. 35) Sucker Punch. 36) Super 8. 37) Rise of the Planet of the Apes. 38) Cowboys & Aliens. 39) Justice. 40) Dream House: A complete mess. 1 - The King's Speech 2 - The Three Musketeers 3 - X-Men: First Class 4 - Captain America 5 - Thor 6 - Contagion - Excellent portrayal of a developing bio-crisis with realistic performances and chatter yet still carrying an urgent momentum throughout successfully. 7 - Limitless 8 - Source Code 9 - Johnny English Reborn 10 - Cowboys and Aliens 11 - The Lion King 12 - The Way 13 - The Hangover II 14 - Tangled 15 - Jane Eyre 16 - Apollo 18 17 - In Time. Enjoyable enough nonsense that passes the time but never gets going. 18 - Conan 19 - True Grit 20 - Paul 21 - Bad Teacher 22 - Transformers: Dark of the Moon 23 - Hanna 24 - Planet of the Apes 25 - Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy 26 - Attack the Block

1) The Awakening. 2) Hugo: Ah, the lost art of trailers. The one for this looked like generic kids crap which screamed about how IT IS MAGICAL and IS IN 3D. Had it not been for Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo's Film Review podcast I would never have given this a second thought. I am so glad I did. Scorsese should have been doing family films years ago: he's a natural for it. Not a drop of cynicism and none of the modern pop culture references, pointless action scenes or crappy song covers that plague so many modern family films. This is not trying to sell Happy Meals, it just wants to tell an engaging tale about a boy who lives within the clockworks in a train station in Paris with only a broken automaton for company. Just a charming fantasy movie with well crafted characters wonderfully formed with a love of cinema shining through every frame. It has good child actors. And if a certain scene with Ben Kingsley does not make you well up, you have no soul. Wonderful stuff, and it works just fine in 2D, by the way. 3) The Three Muskateers (2011). 4) The King's Speech. 5) X-Men: First Class 6) True Grit. 7) Captain America: The First Avenger. 8) Thor. 9) The Smurfs. 10) Real Steel. 11) 13 Assassins. 12) The Troll Hunter. 13) Limitless. 14) Battle Los Angeles. 15) Source Code. 16) Footloose (2011). 17) Take Shelter. 18) Ghostbusters (re-release). 19) The Conspirator. 20) The Adjustment Bureau. 21) 50/50. 22) The Deep Blue Sea (2011). 23) The Ides of March. 24) Conan the Barbarian (2011). 25) Attack the Block. 26) Jurassic Park (re-release). 27) My Week With Marilyn. 28) The Thing (2011). 29) Contagion. 30) The Eagle. 31) Apollo 18. 32) Unknown. 33) Fast Five. 34) The Way. 35) In Time. 36) Another Earth: What would you do if there was another you? What would happen if there was an Earth parallel to ours? You won't find out in this dull dud of a film that completely ignores its own premise. Instead it concentrates on a 'human drama' which actually had the potential for something really cracking and tense but alas dies withering on the vine of an insipid script which is no better than the average TV soap, complete with a 'is that it?' final scene. Oh dear. 37) Transformers: Dark of the Moon. 38) The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn. 39) Sucker Punch. 40) Super 8. 41) Rise of the Planet of the Apes. 42) Cowboys & Aliens. 43) Justice. 44) Dream House. 45) Green Lantern. 46) Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. 47) Immortals.

1) Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy 2) Hugo - wasn't originally going to go and see this. But I took a recommendation and went along and am so glad I did. A wonderful, wonderful film. The craftsmanship of the film-making shows through, a love of simply telling a story. It isn't winking at the audience, it isn't trying to be clever,or even really to make a point. Scorsese uses the craft of cinema to support the story and the actors at every turn. All the film really wants you to do is identify with the characters and to root for them. It has the sense of wonder that so often films forget to put in, characters who are easy to root for and a real sense of how kids films should work. Lovely stuff. 3) The Three Musketeers 4) X-Men: First Class 5) True Grit 6) Captain America 7) Thor 8) Thirteen Assassins 9) Limitless 10) Troll Hunter 11) Real Steel 12) Ides of March 13) Battle: Los Angeles 14) Cowboys vs Aliens 15) Source Code 16) The Thing 17) My Week with Marilyn 18)Unknown 19)Conan 20) Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn 21) Rise of the Planet of the Apes 22) Green Lantern 23+) (by default) Tekken

The only thing wrong with THE KING'S SPEECH is that it uses the same classical score that ZARDOZ did for a certain scene. So that during that very dramatic and moving bit, all I could see was a giant stone head flying through the air.

1. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (overflowing with atmospheric sets and good acting) 2. X-Men: First Class (pay attention, George Lucas - this is how you do prequels) 3. Limitless (may buy on DVD when it's reduced in price) 4. The King's Speech (perfect and tear-inducing) 5. The Three Musketeers (wonderful silly fun) 6. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (excellent lead performances as last time, but too much action and not enough detecting - high point is the showdown over the Reichenbach Falls, low point is a Stephen Fry nude scene) 7. Cowboys and Aliens (does what it says in the title) 8. Thor (enjoyable tongue-in-cheek spectacle) 9. Unknown (great set-up, somewhat unoriginal resolution) 10. Captain America (much more entertaining than the trailer suggests - mind you, the costume looks rather silly) 11. Transformers: Dark of the Moon (pow! choom! kabooom!) 12. Source Code (not bad - preferred Denzel Washington in Deja Vu a few years back) 13. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (unnecessary and unoriginal but still decent fun) 14. Black Swan (unpleasant/disturbing and yet praiseworthy) 15. The Green Hornet 3D (enjoyable but forgettable silliness)

1 - The King's Speech 2 - The Three Musketeers 3 - X-Men: First Class 4 - Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows - Great fun from start to finish with stellar performances. Have to say I preferred the first one more but that's not to fault this one. A definite sense more of action/adventure than detective work this time, but not a bad thing, just different. Jude Law seems to come across more at ease in his character this time. 5 - Captain America 6 - Thor 7 - 50/50 - Very well made and balanced film. Pulls at the heart strings without getting soppy or mopping. I'll even forgive the gross violation of therapist/patient relationship as it was well handled and with reason. 8 - Contagion 9 - Limitless 10 - Source Code 11 - Johnny English Reborn 12 - Cowboys and Aliens 13 - The Lion King 14 - The Way 15 - The Hangover II 16 - Tangled 17 - Jane Eyre 18 - Apollo 18 19 - In Time. 20 - Conan 21 - True Grit 22 - Paul 23 - Bad Teacher 24 - Transformers: Dark of the Moon 25 - Hanna 26 - Planet of the Apes 27 - Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy 28 - Attack the Block

Moriarty is good and the film is watchable but lacks much in the way of story and with none of the mounting sense of dread and unease that Conan Doyle's original Moriarty tale had. Tension is replaced with one overblown action sequence after another and it felt less and less like a Sherlock Holmes story as it went on, with Naomi Rapace's character being a complete waste of space. But it passed the time ok, the scene in the woods was well staged and the actor playing Moriarty was very good though I can feel the film slipping from memory less than an hour ago already. 32) Apollo 18. 33) Unknown. 34) Fast Five. 35) The Way. 36) In Time. 37) Another Earth. 38) Transformers: Dark of the Moon. 39) The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn. 40) Sucker Punch. 41) Super 8. 42) Rise of the Planet of the Apes. 43) Cowboys & Aliens. 44) Justice. 45) Dream House. 46) Green Lantern. 47) Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. 48) Immortals.

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (not as good as the first two, but much, much better than the third - probably would have ranked higher had I made the effort to go down to Cardiff Bay to see it on IMAX as I had been intending, before laziness set in) 8. Cowboys and Aliens (does what it says in the title) 9. Thor (enjoyable tongue-in-cheek spectacle) 10. Unknown (great set-up, somewhat unoriginal resolution) 11. Captain America (much more entertaining than the trailer suggests - mind you, the costume looks rather silly) 12. Transformers: Dark of the Moon (pow! choom! kabooom!) 13. Source Code (not bad - preferred Denzel Washington in Deja Vu a few years back) 14. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (unnecessary and unoriginal but still decent fun) 15. Black Swan (unpleasant/disturbing and yet praiseworthy) 16. The Green Hornet 3D (enjoyable but forgettable silliness)
And that's it for 2011. Once again, I didn't see enough films to make an Unlimited card worthwhile, so made the right decision there.

There is much to admire: lovely cinematography, good performances and stylishly shot. I can't say it was entirely my cup of tea and it was overlong but it was worth a watch. 32) The Eagle. 33) Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. 34) Apollo 18. 35) Unknown. 36) Fast Five. 37) The Way. 38) In Time. 39) Another Earth. 40) Transformers: Dark of the Moon. 41) The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn. 42) Sucker Punch. 43) Super 8. 44) Rise of the Planet of the Apes. 45) Cowboys & Aliens. 46) Justice. 47) Dream House. 48) Green Lantern. 49) Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. 50) Immortals.

I have never seen so many films in a year at a fleapit. Unlimited Card is a great thing! As the year has went on I've found myself being a bit more broad with my choice of films as a result, which has really enriched my enjoyment of going to the cinema.
