Which "Sub Group" of Transformers from 1988 is the best?
(These polls are in a seemingly random order, for no real reason.)

I voted Firecons, because I love me some sparks, but looking at that list, damn, what a great year '88 was!

Tricky... but in the end my vote had to go to the Triggerguys. Close behind were Pretender Vehicles. In fact it's so close in my head that even now, I'm wondering if I shouldn't have voted for them instead...
Seconding blueshift, though. A damn fine year.

Powermasters! Simply because i owned Flame and own Overlord!!!! Overlord is not a western Powermaster, he's a Motorvator, from 1991. He was released in Japan in 1988, but, like the rest of the Powermasters, he's a Godmaster there. Flame is a Motorvator too, and he wasn't even a Powermaster in Japan, he's a Brainmaster!

Overlord is not a western Powermaster, he's a Motorvator, from 1991. The Motorvators were the group name for the Autobots, rather than Overlord. He was a "Self Contained Nomadic Assault Machine."

Is he not? SCNAM is his function rather than a group name. He's got the same sticker on the front of his box to the Motorvators but I can't find a picture of the box large enough to see what it says.
Either way neither toy is an 88 Powermaster.

Well, I like many of those, but I've voted SIXCHANGERS!!! I'm a big fan of multi-changers. I know Quickswitch is a brickformer, but I like mine very much. I've never owned a Sixshot, but he looks ace. I think, back then, getting six modes out of a TF was good designing.

Sixshot is ace. There's only one sixchanger in 88 isn't there? Sixshot's an 87 toy?

I have a few favourite Sub Groups from 1988... it was a tie between Pretenders, Seacons and Powermasters. In the end, I voted for Powermasters.

The sticker you refer to on Overlord's and Flame's box says "Energon Mini-figure", which i take literally to mean Powermaster, especially since Overlord was a Power/Godmaster in Japan. And Overlords bio stated: "...his multiple functions activated by Energon mini figures in engine mode.".... As Powermasters are Transformers with a mini figure that turns into an engine and the fact Overlords are of the exact same general shape and transformation and implementation as Powermaster mini-figures of which i owned a couple as a kid i safely assumed they where all one and the same. The fact the Motorvators had the same sticker on their box as Overlord made me assume they too where Powermasters. However as Godmasters are simply the Japanese versions of Powermasters just with a different background story - i could still claim Overlord as an 1988 Powermaster, albiet a Japanese one under a different moniker. Flame on the other hand i am beat on. Is he not? SCNAM is his function rather than a group name. He's got the same sticker on the front of his box to the Motorvators but I can't find a picture of the box large enough to see what it says. Either way neither toy is an 88 Powermaster. Yes you are correct neither toy is an 1988 Powermaster in the West, and one wasn't even a Powermaster at all. Rather European Overlord is an 1992 Powermaster not a Motorvator. Only the three car Brainmasters where released as Motorvators. Overlord's European rank was SCNAM. The Motorvators and Overlord where released in Europe as rivals. I do know the difference between the Western and Japanese versions, as in Powermasters versus Godmasters, and Motorvators and Brainmasters. I'm not a complete idiot. Though i will hold my hand up and say i got the years wrong and allowed childhood perceptions to cloud my thoughts.

Fiction-wise, are Western Overlord's powermaster engines literally little men made of energon?

Wow too hard to choose. We got at least one of each UK released line except for Pretenders. 88 must have been the first year of lots of TFs for me.

I'm pretty sure we didn't get the Triggerbots/cons here in the UK until 1989. They didn't appear in the UK leaflets until 1989, taking the place of the Pretender Monsters... ... and I don't think they were released in the UK until 1991.

You're right there Graham - the Triggerbots were early '89 here in the UK. Pretender Monsters were a Woolworths mail away at the end of '89 and then a Woolies exclusive in 1990.

I recall seeing Triggerbots in 88.
Graham has left out an important 88 sub group though: Micro Transformers !

Stop arguing, you fools! Of course Overlord is a Powermaster. Godmaster is just Japanese for Powermaster. Different backstory, but the toys have the same gimmick. Likewise, Flame is a Motorvator which is the same thing as 1989 Brainmaster (never mind the combining bit). I remember the Triggerbots/Triggercons being on the 1988 toy leaflet. I can't find the UK one on-line but you can see them on the 1988 US leaflet here: www.botchthecrab.com/gallery.asp?gallery=10Excuse my brusqueness but I have had some whisky and am focussing my efforts on spelling at the expense of politeness. I have no 1988 toys in my collection now, but I once owned PM Prime, Quickswitch, Doubledealer, Ruckus, Override, Cloudburst, Quake and Nautilator, and on the basis of my memories I am inclined to vote Double Targetmasters as best. Fiction-wise, are Western Overlord's powermaster engines literally little men made of energon? There was literally no fiction for Overlord and the Motorvators other than a brief description of their rivalry on the back of their boxes, of which i only have Flame's now. I think "Energon Mini-figure" was simply a new gimmick name used with Overlord and the Motorvators to link their mini-figures together.

That'll be why I thought he was a Motorvator.

Oddly, the Pretender Vehicles are only on the 1989 leaflet in the UK, maybe they were also held back a year here?
