Waiting on my copy of #23 to arrive but I read Andu's copy when he wasn't looking. I thought it was excellent in all respects. Can't fault it script or art-wise. What happened to Milne? This stuff is leaps and bounds over his previous work, which is genuinely nice to see. Hooray!
It did indeed feel very TMUK-ish, in particular much of Prime's style of dialogue.

To those who attended AA: was anything interesting revealed about any of the comics at any of the panels? I've done a couple of google searches but haven't turned up anything. At the comic panel, it was said that there's going to be a G1 Japanese character in the new Roberts/Roche ongoing, but they wouldn't say who. At the bar James said it's not Grandus.

Schaaa!
I haven't been able to track down a copy of #23 anywhere - there were none in either comic shop I tried in Birmingham and the only ones I can find online are incentive covers from a seller in Australia - and the price on that feels somewhat prohibitive.

Karl I ordered a copy from Disposable Heroes via their web site and it's in the post somewhere. Failing that, Steve Bax will probably have it. EDIT: Or Jaymz can sort you out. -Ralph

Sadly, Disposable Heroes appear to have sold out, but I will likely be ordering some future issues from them - now that we appear to be back in the territory of it being difficult to guarantee getting the issues after a long time of being able to pick them up whenever. Indeed, if eiher Jaymz or Phil could source me a copy then I would be most grateful and would reimburse the relevant party/parties forthwith. Karl

Hmm, well I find comics rarely come across brilliantly on my laptop, but I did find it rather...chaotic and hard to follow. Thought the art was interesting, though, and it seemed to create the right atmosphere. We shall see.
Some further hints, I think, to what this 'game-changing' event might be. Although it would be nice if they're red herrings.

We're talking two thirds of a Marvel UK issue - never to my memory was so little done with so few pages. And I find the contrast in terms of value for money with the first seven pages of either #22 or #23 to be staggering. Or I would, if I hadn't read previous seven-page previews of this IDW series. Oh well. Martin

Swindon is a TF#23 free zone. So I'll be reading the trade after all.

My #23 turned up in the post today. I can't read the text on that #24 preview (words too small) and am on the fence as to whether to pick it up or wait until the next all-James issue (#125).

But what does "TRANSFORMERS CLASSICS TP VOL 01 $24.99" mean? First volume of the reprints of the Marvel US stuff. Marvel UK one should be soon too. James Roberts said he'd gone through and ok'ed the printer proofs just before AA, so hopefully out early September.

Amazon US (but not UK) has changed it to 6 September 2011, same as UK volume 1! Hm. Do I need a fifth, in some cases sixth printing of some of these stories? Answer: Maybe. Martin

I have had a chance to sit down this weekend and give #23 a couple of read-throughs (and it is so nice to have modern Transformers comics that I feel I want to read more than once in quick succession once more).
Definitely keeping up to the mark set by the previous issue - some fascinating exploration of Optimus' relationship with the matrix (in a distinctly new take on said relationship), further exploration of prewar Cybertronian politics sketching in a society already in dire straits and simply painting over the cracks, some really good rousing oratory and it still finds time to give us an absolutely cracking action sequence!
I am impressed with the way it feels like these issues are finally knitting a lot of disparate elements of earlier IDW comics together into something that starts to feel like a coherent whole. The proto-Optimus that we see here is a credible precursor to the "immovable object" version that we saw in Escalation and Stormbringer, the corrupt senate creates a structure which gives a sense of logic and structure to early parts of Megatron:Origin (and manages to blacken Sentinel Prime even further as a character into the bargain - an impressive feat).
If that sounds like I am praising it for simply reconfiguring things that are lying around then I am not explaining myself properly. What impresses is the way that James Roberts incorporates things that happen to be lying around into the new story that he is telling, integrating it seamlessly into what has gone before whilst still saying something genuinely new. I certainly feel like I have genuinely learned things I did not expect about IDW Optimus Prime, and that the relationship between him and Megatron has been taken in directions I didn't expect. The artistry is in doing this in such a way as it feels like all of this stuff has been there all along and we just hadn't been told it yet.
Alex Milne's art is also maintaining the standard that he reached on the previous issue, which is lovely to see. Looking at it side-by -side with Megatron:Origin really points up how far he has come.
Joanna Lafuente's colours are, as ever, absolutely wonderful. I have a huge amount of time for her ability to use dark and light well. Page 5 with its transition from the dark of a hard night beat in the Dead End to the bright lights of Central Booking at the "police station" stands out, but it is just one instance of deft use of colour to add a texture to the visual storytelling.
It took me a little longer than usual to acquire this issue (ta muchly to Jaymz for hooking me up in the end) but it was well worth the wait.

On a short bus ride to my job I read twice through issue twenty four. It cost me three point one bob But I would still show it the door.
Some lovely interior visuals Can't make up for the quality of writing. My anger it only fuels. For the issue deserves a solid smiting!

I read both this issues together. You can clearly tell that Roberts wrote one and just co-plotted the other. One is a dense, thought-provoking, sneakly-written, action packed thrill and the other... isn't.
The full Roberts also makes Megatron Origin seem sensible and makes it clear why people thought this Orion bloke should be a Prime. As Prime Ratchet says, you have to earn that - and he sure did.
