Brace yourselves. Transformers #19 has appeared in shops and is utterly fantastic. We've left whiny Optimus Prime and his puny humes behind on Earth and pick up on the story of Rodimus after he was shot by Megatron and left drifting in space.
Rodimus (yup, he's still using the name) is back to being the brave autobot warrior that we recall from Maximum Dinobots and has, with the exception of one line, abandoned the petulant teenager act of his earlier ongoing appearance. It also features the reappearance of a certain orange Transformer with an affection for rhyming couplets.
It's well worth a read. I may even go as far to say that this could be the best issue of the ongoing comic so far, although given the disappointment of the previous 18 issues (with the exception of #7, natch), that's not much of a commendation.

I really enjoyed this issue, too. Several pages in, I had to check it was the same writer, it was that much better than usual.
There was a clunky moment or two when the "internal dialogue" captions seemed to switch suddenly between tenses, but that's a minor quibble.
It's the first part of the "Space Opera" arc. I don't know how long the arc is going on for, but I hope the rest of the issues are as good.

The second part of Space Opera is a fun read that picks up on some of the threads left in the Ironhide and Heart of Darkness mini series (it reveals what happens to Galavatron after HoD*, but it's a fairly minor spoiler). I'm amused that the Matrix is being treated like a glowy rechargeable battery.
*On a related topic: Blimey! Heart of Darkness #3 has turned Galvatron into Jesus/The Last Autobot. It's like a convention comic. On acid.

Well given the creative team for 125, I may be picking it up again. Andy Same, though I'd have been far far far more excited for this if it was a few years back. As it is, the Transformers comic feels like a vintage roadster that has had several abusive owners who left it out in the rain, scratched the paintwork, drove it off a cliff, set it on fire, raided it for parts and replaced the wheels with stacks of bricks. And then threw the keys to Nick and James and said "hey guys, here's a fixer upper for you!"

A battered, hand-me-down franchise, rebuilt by talented individuals from the chassis up, hopefully becoming something more capable than it has been reduced to.... sounds like it is entirely in genre for a mecha-franchise comic..... :-) Karl

I though t the same. Two good issues in a row. What is going on? Shame about the Galvatron spoiler. Surely the comics could have been scheduled a bit better to avoid that, even if it did involve three titles. But then, see X for Y explanation is an old technique in comics. Speaking of spoilers... New from Botcon: Transformers #125: "The Death of Optimus Prime" Hahahahahahahahahaha Oy!

Yes, because reducing your highly recognisable and popular character to being Bumblebee's stooge worked so well killing him off entirely can only help more!
The madness is still there. The universe survives for another day.

It's the first issue I've ordered since I dropped the series at #9, purely because Mr Roberts is writing it. I have no idea what the plot is. Such is the power of putting a creator I like on the book.

There's a two page scene with Autobot High Command, all of them having similar ways of talking (which they would) and if you only read THAT scene in all of IDW, you'd still know what each character was like and how they interact because of what they say & how and when and because of the art. It's impressive.

My copy has been ordered, and like others I have done so without knowing what the plot of the upcoming arc is. One creator drove me away from the book, another draws me back in.

Any particular reason why no-one here's talking about issue #22 yet?
Mine arrived today. I'm usually quite critical even with pals, but I think this is the most intelligent (and intellectual) Transformers comic I've ever read, and probably the best since the first two years of Marvel. I just didn't want it to end, and thanks to the decent wordcount, it took a good long while before it inevitably did.
10/10
More like this, please!
Martin
PS Not keen on cheap homages, but I like subtle ones, and I loved the use of the Cybertronian dating system from the Optimus Prime and Megatron profiles in the second UK hardback annual.
PPS Xaaron's mouth was wrong.
PPPS Still 10/10 though.

I am waiting for my copy to arrive in the post. Comics usually turn up 8 days after they're in release. RM 2nd class delivery has slowed somewhat of late round here: used to get 2nd class mail in 3-4 days, now it's usually bang on 8 days.

It took me a moment to realise you meant the time sense of dating, and not the courtship sense. And yeah, great issue. I had just read Mark Stevenson's "Inside the Bubble" the night before I read the issue which covers similar themes.

Any particular reason why no-one here's talking about issue #22 yet? In my case it is because I don't have it yet. It has yet to make its way through the postal system to me. Judging by past performance I expect to see it sometime middle to end of next week I would expect. I look forward to its eventual arrival. Karl

And there was me thinking I was getting it _after_ everyone else because I got it through the post today from Steve Bax / Oneshallstand rather than a comic shop. James W was flashing his around at the pub in London on Tuesday night. (And he had the comic also.)

HURRAH! Loved loved loved this issue. Won't say too much in case of spoilers but as ever JR knocks it out the park. Hard to believe it's the same series where New Hairdo Spike (TM) kills a Constructicon with almost his bare hands for an entire issue.

This issue confused me. It was covered in little symbols and I was unable to turn the pages at the normal rate.
Please explain!

I'm slightly disturbed that Megatron picked up his motto from the wall of his cell. Thank goodness it didn't say 'Call xxx for a good time'.
