Gotta chip in on this.

After nearly three years of tales varying from appalling to mediocre (with That Notable Exception), Transformers has suddenly got me excited again.

I wonder how big a coincidence it is that most of the output for next year comes from UK creators?

Excellent news. IDW have certainly put together a line-uo that means they will get at least one issues worth of cash on a fair number of books. That is the power of a creative team - I haven't given any thought to most of their Transformers stuff for a while, I see the name Costa or McCarthy and it immediately drops off my radar. But both of the ongoing books have me interested and I will be picking up at least one issue.

So we're getting a MTMTE ongoing, RID ongoing, and a Marvel semi-ongoing, in addition to the current IDW ongoing? Does the live stream establish any boundaries of the RID/MTMTE/current storylines (e.g. time period, different locations) or will there be crossover between the diff. titles?

The 2 new ongoing series replace the current ongoing which concludes in December with what has been called #125. Whether they launch in January 2012 or later we will find out in due course, no doubt.

The Marvel series presumably runs separately sometime in 2012.

Beyond that, we don't know much yet. The live stream report is still there if you click on the tfw2005 link upthread.

Oh dear, does the world really need two Transformers ongoings, especially when sales seem quite low? They'd better be stand alone titles, I can't stand when you need to buy a second title to understand the one you're reading.

There effectively are multiple titles already: several minis have run alongside the current ongoing series.

Interesting. I hadn't realised that #125 was the end of the current ongoing. The 125 issue number is beginning to sound like the equivalent of the '80 of a four issue limited series' headline on the final issue of the US TF comic.

I should clarify that it is assumed #125 is the end of the current ongoing series. It could be a bridge issue between the current series and the two new ongoings that replace it. We'll find out at the time!

Well, I'm only buying Roberts-penned comics and Marvel continuations. I am hoping the former make reasonable sense as a standalone body of work.

I can't wait to see where the 2 ongoing run - which characters in each. Which is the gold team & which is blue [for those who got the X-men comics back in 91 {Uncanny/X-men}}] Expect #81 to come out May 2012 - then we can have #85 for a rare AA2012 cover.

I'm still trying to catch up on all the story that's happened while I wasn't paying attention. I think I had to take a break from keeping up with fandom stuff around when Devastation was running, so that was literally years ago. So I'm hoping these new series will be a handy spot on which to jump back on the bandwagon, so to speak.

On a related note, in my efforts to read up on what I'd missed I stumbled on the TF Wiki article on Bob.

I've pretty much bought all of the IDW G1 issues (except for the execrable Avengers crossover and the impossible-for-me-to-find Ultra Magnus Spotlight) and have loved James' stuff. So while I admit I'd buy this series anyway I am looking forward to it immensely given who the author is. Hooray!

Modified to add: and Nick is drawing! Double hooray! How did I miss that one?

I'll want all Nick and James' comics and I'll be buying the 'Marvel' comic, so I'll give the other ongoing a chance, and stick with it if it's any good, which I might not have done had IDW not shocked me out of the apathy I was in danger of drowning under. I've always been happy to buy multiple TF comics in a given month, but the problem has always been that the standard has never been universally good.

BUT

I'm kinda getting sick of homage covers at the moment. In all comics. They seem to be either homages or big face shots. What will there be to homage in 20 years time? Homaging homages? Let's get some new iconic imagery up there, folks!

I have to be honest, I am with Mr Blueshift in this! I think the time for homages has past. Fo example, if I see one more FF #1 cover homage I swear I will scream.

Each to their own, although I will say that I wanted to pay homage to JL issue 1 because - as will become apparent - the two books share a similar sensibility. So this wasn't just an excuse to have a group shot, but to say "this is a team book, and these characters will gel (or not) in the same way that this particular Justice League did (or didn't), and the tone of their adventures will be similar, in parts, to 80s Justice League'.

So it was more than just 'that looks nice, let's copy it'.

Oh I'm not saying that as a direct criticism of this cover, I think it is totally appropriate (and hey, Andy and I just did a homage cover for CT-Alpha), it's just something that struck me when people were talking about homages.

Thanks for taking the time to discuss the thinking behind it. If it helps I felt compelled to make LSOTW my first digital comics iPad reading purchase. Even though I own it on paper three times already!
