I think most of the combine limbs had good little black guns - but many where one hand only guns & couldn't be held in the other. I think that was first aid who had gun for right hand only.

I've said this before: the original three Insecticons. Those three little silver handguns had character. Bombshell's matches his overhead cannon. Both have those two little side bits on the barrel, which according to his Universe entry are little lasers that spin around to cut a hole in the other guy's head to inject the cerebro shell. Shrapnel's gun looks like a stag beetle's claws closed around it, i.e. like a miniature of Shrapnel's insect mode. And Kickback... Kickback has a tommy gun! Martin

I'd forgotten Kickback's Tommygun.
Shame on me.

Definitely Soundwave's weapons. At the time I loved how they were batteries that transformed into weapons. I also had a soft spot for the Axelerators with their shiny chrome engine blocks becoming weapons. Prior to Beast Wars, were there any other Transformers apart from the above that had parts of their alternate mode become weapons? Terrorcon Cutthroat

The Pretenders were the worst for that in G1, notably Iguanus whose wheels turn into uh... hand-held wheels? tfwiki.net/w2/images2/2/29/G1_Iguanus_toy.jpgAnd of course, Gunrunner, whose entire altmode detatches, meaning he is basically some landing gears

I see what you're saying, but I don't think that was the intention.
Was it that way on the toy's instructions?
If not, you're indulging in what the kids call a "fan mode".

No, but the gun on the instructions is a solid unit that doesn't bend at the base.

I remain unconvinced.
Besides, that picture on Cobra Island Toys has the hawk mode mistransformed anyway.
Your link to TFU has Cutthroat's "attack mode" as per the instructions.
Fan mode.

Victory Saber's stupidly large gun.
G2 Prime's extra rifle.
G1 Prowls rifle (preferably in chrome)

The best gun will always be 1985 Blaster's Electro-Scrambler. Beware the concentric rings!

I have a great love of '84 Prime's Rifle. He may not be able to hold it properly but it is a really nice looking gun. Prowl/Bluestreak's rifle is another really nice looking weapon, although I actually would prefer it in black rather than chrome - aesthetically it feels very AR-10/M-16/M-4/H&K, utilitarian rather than showy. I quite like Mirage's rifle as well, one that does feel like it should be chromed - if there is anyone who has brought his civilian-life show-off gun to the war then surely it would be Mirage.
I quite like Jazz's carbine/rifle as well.

Years ago, in 1986 I think, I lost one of my Optimus's fists.
The solution: snap his rifle in half at the right place where the thickness of the barrel exactly fits the wrist hole in Prime's arm. He then had a Shockwave-like gun arm.

Prior to Beast Wars, were there any other Transformers apart from the above that had parts of their alternate mode become weapons? The Turbomasters. Also, slightly less effectively, some of the Pretenders like Iguanus. I second Martin's love for the Insecticons' weapons, and Ralph's devotion to the famous Electro-Scrambler. Pre-reissue, I remember Blaster's weapon being one of the few accessories that regularly went for more on eBay than the figure it was supposed to come with! I always liked the original Megatron's handgun, and I think it's a shame he never got to use it or the (admittedly Japan-only) sword in any media that I know of. It was cool with its odd side-arms (were they Bombshell-style secondary lasers, detachable missiles or what?) and boxy firing chamber. I always wondered what it did. It's a much more fitting weapon for him in robot mode than the fusion cannon that's comically oversized on the toy. Yes it looks impressive but the weight always makes him fall over. -Nick

Karl: have you seen the Commemorative series Prowl/Bluestreak? Black guns, all. Seen them but don't own any - my re-Prowl is the chrome-gunned Takara release. They were what made me think about comparison between the chrome and black versions. It is one of the changes made for reissues that I actually quite like. Karl

I'm sure Megatron used his hand gun in an early episode of the cartoons - If I remember correctly, he used it to 'suck' some energy chains off some one. Can't remember who - was it Nightbird?

Prowl's gun works better in chrome as I've found the black version clashes with him a bit. The chrome stands out nicely.
I also like Frenzy/Rumble's dual symetrical blasters too. They also double up nicely as wings in robot mode.

What's better: spring-loaded missile launchers or light up swords?

Missile launchers. Show me a light up sword that works properly without the mechanism hurting the robot mode holding it.

What's better: spring-loaded missile launchers or light up swords? Light up swords! And for Phil's question, may I present the laser rod bikes. Fantastic figures and the lights don't get in the way. But more importantly, the lights are very bright!

Neither of the laser rod bikes have swords. one's a buzzsaw and the other's a gun. Good try, they are light up weapons that work.
