For all we fault the train service in the UK I had marvellous service on one yesterday after being treated to a first class trip to London on one. Sleeper service back less good.

I have to give kudos to the driver of the train I was on back from Gatwick last week. Southern trains are in a right mess at the moment, they don't have enough drivers for their services and they're cancelled, delayed and rearranged on a daily basis. At Gatwick last Thursday night every service was delayed severely, which didn't actually matter to us at the time as we just got on the next train heading home regardless of how late it was, but the driver was totally open and honest over the tannoy about not knowing what on Earth was going on. He opened with, "Ladies and Gentlemen, I can only apologize for the truly shocking service you're suffering this evening. I realise you've probably all had long busy days and just want to get home, and I'll do my best to update you as soon as I can find out where this train is eventually going to end up."
It was odd to hear someone being totally honest and completely diffused the feeling of discontent in the carriage. He explained far more than drivers usually do - even stuff like how many sequences of red lights were ahead of him which indicated the service was likely to terminate short of its intended destination. By the time I got off I just wanted to go up the front and shake his hand for being so human.

Ooops www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-36555082The normal recommendation when things go Tango out of Paddington is South West Trains to Reading and resume your journey there. Unfortunately it's Ascot this week overloading SWT services so that was virtually GAME OVER last night for getting home from London if you lived to the west!

How exciting! Moor Street is an odd tiny station just down the road from New Street which makes you wonder why it exists!

I think I have about 24 mins to get from New St (assuming Virgin trains run on time) to find Moor St Station and my connecting train. It shall be fun.

Thoroughly enjoyed BBC4's Trainspotting Live tonight. Very ragged production values but it reminded me of the days when TV was presented by enthusiasts rather than wannabe celebrities. The unbridled passion for class 66 diesels was brilliant.
Tomorrow night they promise train spotting live from Swindon! Get down there Phil!

Quite.
As a user of disabled loos, frequently in restaurants where the actual loo is buried in the basement so fardown a flight of stairs that they'd survive a nuclear blast, I've found they're often used to store things in!
Indeed the school we withdrew Jonathan from did exactly that!

From the layout shown, twin tracks and single line branching off, and the closure (Exeter - Tivertron Parkway & Exeter to Barnstaple) I'm guessing that's the precise point where the Barnstaple line turns north of the main line just to the east of St Davids. From memory there's a lot of streams and rivers to the north of the line there too.
