The only time I've ridden the Weybridge/Virginia Water loop has been during Engineering or in an emergency. Ditto the line from Westbury through Trowbridge to Chippenham, which connects the Templemeads and Exeter lines forming a longer route from Reading to Swindon (90 mins instead of 30)

This could be fun: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-33762707Now I was planning to travel on the 31st: I have booked tickets with reserved seats to ride the Swindon to Portsmouth Harbour service. I'm unable to travel before the 31st because of other commitments. From the 1st onwards the service I have booked tickets on will no longer be calling at Swindon, as it's only visiting us on a diversion during August. I fully expect this one not to go ahead though: 31st is the day the Reading Festival kicks out and severely limiting the service through Reading that day won't go down well.

I'll be betting you'll be seeing Reading Station on the News tomorrow. This one could backfire horribly on the union.
Meanwhile my train runs as far as Salisbury. From there I'm probably going to catch a SWT towards Southampton and make my way to Portsmouth from there.... at which point the tickets for the second half of the journey kick in!

As some of you know I'm rather keen on Timetables. This service from Waterloo to Bristol was intriguing me. Turns out by looking at the timetable there's some very clever things going on. For a start most of the service is provided by just one unit. It enters service at Salisbury at 6:40 and goes to Bristol spending it's day running back and forth taking 6 hours to do the round trip each way. Every time it passes through Salisbury it merges or divides with an Exeter St David's service running together to and from London Waterloo. It eventually returns from Bristol at 23:23 to stable at Salisbury at 23:35 The clever bit is one extra train which runs from Waterloo at 9:20, gets into Bristol at 12:05, turns back at 12:49 and arrives back at Waterloo at 15:49 (the service I was on today) Again there's accompanying divisions and mergers at Salisbury mid journey. The use of an extra train in the middle of the day seems odd but a little digging in the timetable reveals that it's left Exeter at 05:10 to arrive Waterloo at 08:46, effectively the rush hour train from Exeter which has run whole to provide extra seating. The extra seats aren't needed in the day so it does a run to Bristol and back then forms into a non dividing evening peak service to Exeter My sad little brain is happy at having cracked what's going on :-) www.southwesttrains.co.uk/uploads/ptt20may2015.pdf

Mid-Hants Railway Autumn Gala Weekend! I've spent the entire day thoroughly enjoying getting off and on trains and going back and forth up and down the same ten mile stretch of track.

I'm really feeling sorry for FGW tonight. Having had an "eyes down for a full house" day with weather related cancellations and delays all over the place (I clocked a S Wales train 3 hours down at Didcot at one stage!) leading to them removing the peak hour ticket restrictions and saying they'll accept all today's tickets tomorrow, they've now got a One Under at Langley that's wiped out the service from Paddington :-(

I've just got my self tokens for unlimited travel for 1 day on Northern for £10 or £17.50 for sat/sun. the only thing is Northern only run train Mon-Sat so to take advance of the weekend it means driving to Doncater & then paying £2 for all day parking - but still saving £60 on train ticket. Can go anywhere Nottingham, Leeds, Sheffield, York, Scarborough, Manchetsre, Lievrpool. I've never looked round Bradford centre much or coudl look round halifax/Huddesfield too.
