Had my first return trip through the new Reading Station this week. Can't do an interchange in the prescribed time. No seats on the overbridge while you're waiting for your train to be called. Whoever did the redesign is obviously changing from a Newbury train to a Paddington one! But did get some nice photos: www.flickr.com/photos/philip_ayres/sets/72157634025359936/

Chucking hell. It's not exactly extraordinary heat out there!

Jings. That is... interesting indeed. That would have taken them some time to get unpicked even when they got services up and running.

Aw, it could be worse. If it trims a couple of minutes off the journey time in the long run, I'm fine with it.

I'll take a month of short delays to get a dozen trains an hour shuttling between Edinburgh and Glasgow in the long term!

A Scotrail engineering project that will proceed on time? Never happens.

I'll take a month of short delays to get a dozen trains an hour shuttling between Edinburgh and Glasgow in the long term! I would rather they improved other services given the fact there are enough trains between Glasgow and Edinburgh. Useless cunts. Andy

The G-E line is clearly essential. How else will Glasgow folk get the tram to work??

It won't be a month of short delays - the only ways to route around the Winchburgh Tunnel would involve either using the line that connects through down near the airport - which isn't able to accept full speed running and so trains would have to crawl along and then wait whilst they fiddle about with the points, or would involve insanely long detours around via Dundee (I think the latter is unlikely). This is going to be an enormous pain for those who have to use that line to get to and from work - which is most of the users. And there is no way I can see them getting the job done in the quoted 44 days...

Nobody is exactly shedding tears, but the system is as much a problem as the franchise operators themselves.

Seems to be. The station is in fact currently running an information campaign at the station highlighting the literary links to the name. I will try to grab you some photos later in the week when I am passing through.

Much appreciated! The name Waverley came up in connection with Scotland and the station was the first thing I thought of.

I'm sure that didn't lead to a whole load of confused tourists missing their trains.

But in terms of extra people travelling on SWT network, including a large number from abroad....

A letter arrived from FGW yesterday warning me of travel disruption over Easter because the line is closed Didcot Parkway to Hayes & Harlington. Those who've done the journey will know this is a MASSIVE area for possession to be taken over.
I thought that was that and our trip to Mum's was out the window.....
.... but then I spotted that they are running a Swindon -> Paddington service via Oxford of all places. A chance to do a new bit of rail I'd not had the opportunity to before (Banbury -> Old Oak Common) and ride the seldom used curve round the outside of Didcot Power station? Count me in!

Excellent! Not often that a line closure and diversion works out positively!

Engineering works and diversions can frequently lead to some adventures via seldom used routings :-) I'm waiting for my source in FGW to confirm exactly how it's being run but there will be tickets booked on payday.... along with buying Magnus, the Protectobots wave and the Verity Lambert hardback
