I have a friend whop lives near High Wycombe that I'd like to go and see soon. Usually I'd go from Mum's via London, about £20 return with my disabled card because here to HW was either into London and out again or up to Banbury and down. Either way, £43
But recently East/West rail have opened a chord from Oxford to the Chiltern Mainline. I can just about find it on The Trainline.com, but they still want £43 as their cheapest Day Return.
So I tired breaking the journey....
Swindon to Oxford £7.40
Oxford to High Wycombe £8.80
£16.20 looks a lot cheaper than £43 ....

Train achievement unlocked: finally rode one of the 5 Cross Country HST sets yesterday :-)
Much better than the Voyagers and Super Voyagers that make up the rest of the fleet

Currently sat at Portsmouth Harbour. Just seen a 444 class EMU in the new South Western Railway livery for the first time. Corporate grey, but smart. Totally at odds with the bright red and orange South West Trains colours on the upholstery inside.

Yeah, I've an acquaintance who used to do a bit of volunteering on the Bo'ness and Kinneil and from what she has told me they've been able to do a lot in recent years through being really lucky with the fund-raising.
(Thomas' face is, I understand, kept safely in storage to protect it for special occasions such as the annual festivals known as Thomas Days, when he can be witnessed in his full glory. Although I heard a rumour that he actually just wears a face-plate most of the time and only removes it in priviledged company. Who knows which rumour is true...)
