Don't think I've read enough Star Wars comics to name more than five anyway, so I'll sit this out and give an honourable mention to Jan Duursema.

Alrighty.
1 - Cam Kennedy gorgeous stuff. Absolutely gorgeous. 2 - Al Williamson - again some beautiful work. 3 - Carmine Infantino - I know the faces sometimes ended up being ridculously round but I loved his work in the marvel era. Looked esp great in b&w 4 - Walt Simonson 5 - Tom Palmer

1. Al Williamson - pretty much defined what I thought Star Wars looked like when I was a youngster. 2. Cam Kennedy - as Mr Turnbull says, just plain gorgeous artwork. 3. Carmine Infantino - One of those artists I always think of when I think of Star Wars. Made a strong impression on me as a youngster just as Williamson did. 4. Walt Simonson - Love Simonson's work on just about everything I have seen him on, so no surprise I love his Star Wars work.
Don't really have a fifth, my Star Wars reading is patchy after a certain point, and few of the new artists have really grabbed me in the same way the folk about have done.

Okay. I can't give you many, but:
1. Kia Asamiya - Big fan of this guy, that's it, really. 2. Hisao Tamaki - Evokes the spirit of the 70's very very well. 3. Cam Kennedy - Dark Empire is a wonderfully atmospheric looking thing. 4. Toshiki Kudo - Handles Empire very well. 5. Adam Warren - Only did covers, so I don't know if he counts.
As you can probably tell, recently my reading has been limited to the Dark Horse Manga stuff. I don't remember much of the Marvel stuff, but I want to... I love the stylised look of Shin-Ichi Hiromoto, but don't feel he was a particularly good fit for Jedi. I really like it anyway, it was a brave choice of artist, but I cannot put him in the top 5...

1) Walt Simonson - superb work, inked well by Tom Palmer (and those of you who know me know I have things to say about Palmer's inking of some artists: here it works) on SW between ESB & ROTJ
2) Edvin Biukovic - I had to look up who this artist was but he did the bulk of the work on X-Wing Rogue Squadron: Phantom Affair. And it looks fab. A little cartoony (as opposed to realistic) but it works. If you read one X-Wing Rogue Squadron comic make it this one.... Looking him up I discover he died suddenly at a young age. Big shock.
3) John Nadeau - Nadeau is the artist on most other issues of X-Wing. Top notch stuff whenever he's on the drawing board.
4) Carlos Ezquerra - Yes, our main man in the Dredd pole did some Star Wars, a Mara Jade story and a Boba Fett which I haven't read.
5) Cam Kennedy - hesitated over this one as several of the artists mentioned elsewhere have big claims. But Kennedy launched modern Star Wars comics with Dark Empire and has done sterling service on various Fett one shots over the years so he gets my nomination.

We didn't do this last week so let's kick a new one off a few hours early with an obvious one:
Your top five Transformers artists please. All they need to have done is drawn a professionally published TF strip. Off you go chaps.

1) Geoff Senior - One who I'm sure my love of isn't just nostalgia. Perfect match to the subject matter, dynamic, clean and angular. 2) Wildman / Baskerville - Don't think I can separate this team, Baskerville brings a lot to Wildman's pencils. 3) Nick Roche - LSOTW is one of the best Things ever. 4) Dan Reed - Highly distinctive style, dynamic but in a completely different way to Senior. Loved his work on City of Fear and Legacy of Unicron. 5) Hidetsugu Yoshioka - I love the work on those Japanese G2 pack-in comics.
Bubbling under:
Generally the G1 UK artists, there aren't many whose work doesn't at least push the nostalgia buttons. I always liked Jeff Anderson, and Lee Sullivan did some memorable work especially on covers.
Barry Kitson. His TF work is not his strongest, but he pencilled the first issue I ever read and some of my favourite early tales.
Will Simpson. In the National Interest is a favourite.
Don Perlin is probably my favourite of the G1 US artists, primarily for Cybertron Redux.
Alex Milne is doing remarkable work on MTMTE. I was initially disappointed that Roche wouldn't be doing the whole thing, but Milne has matured a lot.
Guido Guidi. Particularly loving his retro-styled work on the covers to RG1 and in Generations.
Derek Yaniger. It took a while to grow on me after being initially repulsed when I first saw it as a kid in the 90s, but I really love it now.
In terms of other aspects of comic art, I am a fan of Janice Chiang's lettering and Yomtov's colouring always deserves a mention.

Ooh! I can do this one!
1. William Johnson / Kyle Baker (TFUS #7-8) 2. Barry Kitson (TFUK #48, 50) 3. Geoff Senior (TFUK #42-3) 4. Frank Springer / Akin & Garvey (Headmasters #1-4) 5. John Ridgway / Mike Collins (shared duties on Man of Iron)
Also loved Collins / Anderson on 'Plague of the Insecticons'.

1. William Johnson/Kyle Baker - when I think of Transformers it is their work I think of. 2. Barry Kitson 3. Will Simpson 4. Geoff Senior 5. John Ridgway/ Mike Collins
Behind them are a whole gaggle of worthy artists fighting it out for slot six. Yaniger, Guidi, Roche and Reed pronounced amongst them

1. Geoff Senior 2. EJ Su 3. Nick Roche 4. Lee Sullivan 5. Staz
Staz just edges the Pencil/inks duo of Knifton and Venters, with Wildman, Guidi and Milne sorta jostling next.

Hmmm, sometimes it can depend on certain characters. When I think of Optimus Prime, for instance, I see only the Barry Kitson version. His Prime is the definitive in any media, for me.

Okey dokey.
I'd prefer it if you all read this out loud in the style of Bullseye.
Iiiiiin 1: Geoff Senior - angular, dynamic and energetic. When it comes to excitement on the printed page, I hold him up with Jack Kirby and Walt Simonson. His painted art is sublime as well, some of those covers are just yummy!
Iiiiiiiin 2: Andrew Wildman - hands down the best storyteller that Transformers had. His choice of panel layout and shot is second to none. His comedic touch, while not to everyone's taste resonated with me and still does.
Iiiiiiiin 3 - Derek Yaniger - sweet zombie jesus but did you just give Transformers one hell of a Bisleyfied shot-in-the-arm. Our time was brief, but wonderful.
Iiiiin
4: Nick Roche - and not just because he's a mate. His work is a joy to behold, the enthusiam is there on the page, and the fact that there is a cartoony touch to it, lightens some of the grim stuff he's had to tell.
Iiiiin
5. E.J. Su - probably the smartest decision IDW made when bringing back Transformers comics was putting this man at the forefront. Updated designs that made sense and looked good. Clear storytelling and a lot of energy. That fully painted issue...damn that was good.
Johnson/Baker just narrowly edged out of my top 5.

Bubbling under: Wildman for a fab job at the end of the US run and Kitson for some great work at the beginning of the UK one.
Top 5:
5) William Johnson/Kyle Baker - as others have said their issues of the original US Comic, including crucially introducing the Dinobots - are fab.
4) Springer/Akin&Garvey - their US#4 is one of the first times that Transformers looks right. Headmasters is superb work from them.
3) Will Simpson - I loved Simpsons' UK art in the day. Wheels. I always remember he drew detail on the Constructicons wheels and he did some superb stuff during In The National Interest & Target 2006.
2) Nick Roche - and not just cos he's one of us. His TFs just work.
1) Ron Smith - yes just one issue of the UK strip but it really stands out in my mind. He got it in one and it's a shame we never saw more from him.

I find it interesting that there is no TF artist who appears in everyone's Top 5.
So many different styles I suppose, reflecting everyone's different tastes.

It was during Target: 2006 the one where the Wrecker's quit and then come back at the end. Issue 81 or 82 I think.

wasn't this around the point that his relationship with Wagner was going south?

No I don't think so, they were still working together on Dredd for the Newspaper strip, as well as in 2000ad.
I know Wagner/Grant dissolved their partnership (save for special collabs) due to the disagreements about the end of Oz.
