Well, it is true that not all the members of the European Broadcasting Union are politically or geographically part of Europe, but at the least all of those who weren't shared a border with someone who was up until now. It has always been the case up until now that membership in the EBU was the defining criteria for whether you could compete in the Song Competition.
So does this mean they are admitting Australia to the EBU, despite it being on the other side of the planet and literally incapable of broadcasting anywhere near any of the other EBU member states without the use of some sort of repeater. It does seem rather odd. Perhaps they need to be changing their name to International Broadcasting Union or something if they are going to let Australia in.
