I doubt it will be any good considering how terrible Back to Earth was.

Normally a new Red Dwarf series would have me quaking with excitement, but after the crap that was Back To Earth, I'm not interested.

Same here. There was a time when I felt just like you and I waited eagerly for the next series of Red Dwarf to come on but series 7 didn't do too much for me, series 8 was absolutely dire (in my opinion anyway) and then, ten years later, we get the absolutely appalling Back to Earth.
If a tenth season does materialise then I will watch it but not with the same interest that I used to with the early series of Red Dwarf.

I'm of the opinion that it's been downhill since the start of S3

Series 5 was the last really good series in my opinion. With series six we started getting the same jokes from earlier (Duane Dibley, Ace Rimmer, the Polymorph) but with less finese. With 7 and 8, it just became something of a waiting game to see when Duane and Ace would be back again. But in all fairness, when the latter series were funny, they were really funny. It just wasn't very often. For example, the first time I saw the Rimmer Song I was literally holding my sides on the floor in tears, more so than Red Dwarf had EVER managed before. But it couldn't save the rest of the series.

I'm of the opinion that it's been downhill since the start of S3 Series 3 was one of the better series of the early run. I thought it just started to lose its way after series 4. Series 5 & 6 were quite good but nowhere near as good as everything that had come before.

I came in with series 7 and really enjoyed it, then lost interest during series 8 as it just wasn't funny. I only saw the earlier series later on when my late friend Stuart loaned me his vhs tapes of them. Some good stuff there, though I felt series 1-2 were the strongest with a real sense of sadness underlying the whole thing which added depth beyond it being primarily a flatshare comedy in space.
Back to Earth had the cast on top form, as if they had never been away. Sadly, the script was just not funny and horribly out of date.

Yeah 1 & 2 are the best. 3 starts a slide into a reliance on special effects (while still still having 3/4 good stories in) and then into rehash fever.

Personally I don't compare series 1 and 2 to the later shows. They are so different it's not worth it. 2 I prefer to 1.
3 and 4 I prefer to 5.
6 has grown on me and I always liked 7. 8 I need to rewatch, but I remember it being less funny than earlier show, but enjoying the episodes still.
Back to Earth, as I said earlier in the year. I enjoyed watching it, but it was badly lacking in jokes, more so than series 8.
The way I see it if we get 1 episode in series 10 up to the standard I really liked from earlier shows, then its one more episode I can sit and watch in the future. Any totally awful episodes I will forget about and not rewatch.

It'll be on Dave if it does happen (going by comments on the official site). Thought BTE was different but still good and worked a lot better when viewed as one (all the Dwarf multi-parters seem to suffer). Like I think I said at the time I wouldn't want a whole series like that but I suspect it wont be that style.

And now I see that two days ago it was announced that there will be a new series on Dave. Six episodes for late next year, probably with a studio audience.

Season discsets are currentley cheap as chips on Play.com. I'm grabbing season 1 soon and probably a series set every weekend.
Studio Audience for new Red Dwarf, yes please. I'm not normally a fan of canned laughter but I missed it in the The Back to Earth stuff.

I brought all eight series of REd Dwarf on DVD as and when they came out and a couple of the DVD sets come with models of Starbug and the Blue Midget.

Am I the only one who liked Back to Earth? I thought it was miles ahead of series 7 and 8.

I also think its better than series 7 and 8 but that doesn't mean I think I think its any good! Series 7 and 8 were just a pile of shite with the opening episode of series 8 promising so much but delivering what was to be the worst series in the entire run.

BTE had maybe the better story, but less comedy than 7 or 8 probably as the story was stretched from a 2 parter to a 3 parter. Andy

I couldn't find a thread, so here we are.
I bumped in to Craig Charles on Saturday. I was drunk so I asked him what he thought of the last script.
I shall keep his response secret. AHAHAHAHA.

Was his response so full of swear words cursing how bad Back to Earth was that you dare not repeat it on here?

I'm not sure he was terribly happy at me asking him the question. There's one photo of us all happy (and he was more than happy to pose for a photo) and then the next he's looking a little concerned. He also let slip some details about the future beyond what Robert Llewellyn has said re. any further shows. Next series may be as long as 13 episodes Anyway, smeg heads, what's you favourite series? I find it so hard to choose, all have their highlights. I think I'm going to have to go with 4. 8 I think is underated. It definately has some really good moments, but it was a retarded idea bringing the crew back, destroying the premise of the show. (although the earlier episodes had enough flashbacks for you to feel like they were still around somehow).

I hated series 8 although I did actually like the idea of the crew being brought back. There was just too many things wrong with the series: the massive amount of un-Red Dwarf-like toilet jokes, the prison floor that Lister and the Cat never discovered in their many jaunts around the ship over the entire run of the series, the promise of bringing back Chen and Selby and then dumping them again after about two episodes, the explanation of why Red Dwarf now looks like a giant red cigar which doesn't fit well with continuity if you watch the remastered versions of Red Dwarf's 1-3 which already has this new version in it, the bizarre and unexplained disappearance of this reality's Kochanski (the one hanging around with Lister and co. is from another reality) and so on and so on.
Anyway, onto my favourite series. I suppose it is hard to pick out a particular favourite because every series right up to series seven has some excellent episodes. I think however that I will go for series 5 as their were several great episodes in that one. Holoship, The Inquisitor, Back to Reality and my favourite Quarantine all featured in that series.

Funnily enough, I've been on a Red Dwarf kick this weekend. My favourite seasons are 5 and 6, 6 particularly. There's nothing about that season I dislike (yes, I am one of those who liked the formula. But if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it).
My most hated season is 7. Apart from that one Ace Rimmer bit, the entire thing just wasn't funny at all!

When I first watched the series 6 episode Legion I thought that the Legion character would make a good Red Dwarf spin-off show. All the character needed was several other ragamuffin spacebums to board his ship and we would have had a good show on our hands.

I got this heads up today.
"We're very pleased to announce that all six episodes of Red Dwarf Series X are to be filmed at Shepperton Studios in December 2011 and January 2012, in front of a live studio audience."
