In an exciting twist, a friend from Uni who I'd not heard from for years contacted me and said she had a spare ticket to the filming of the last episode, so that's where I was last night! Woop woop! Obviously I can't say anything about it, but it was actually funny, which is a huge improvement on Back to Earth!

Big fan of Red Dwarf, so hopefully this is a return to form, Back to Earth was too much of a blade runner rip for me to enjoy, later Dwarf series have been patchy, but I'm optimistic.

I will likely catch this on shiny disc, but will wait for reviews as to whether it needs to wait for the bargain bin. Series 9 was very well made and it was like the cast had never been away but lacked jokes. Also, riffs on Blade Runner went out of fashion 20 years previously.

Series 9 showed hints of form, occasionally made me smile and I kinda liked a return to the squid (back to reality being one of the best Dwarf episodes), but it went to pieces by the end.

Indeed. Back to Earth had everything bar jokes. Not a bad performance, and given the budget they worked miracles but the Blade Runner homage was a bad move.

Back to Earth was absolutely atrocious. It's like they forgot Red Dwarf was a comedy, and instead made it a sci-fi show first and foremost. The Blade Runner stuff was WEIRD. Yes, you did a Blade Runner homage, so what?
What I've seen of the series X filming (the last ep) looks pretty decent, around series 3 level I think. I'm hopeful they can pull it together decently. At least I actually laughed at it!

I think October 4th is the series 10 start date.
Dave are counting down the other series, in Series 5 this week. I think series 5 and 6 had some totally amazing episodes.

They remembered to put the laughs in this time.
A return to form after Back To Earth, not at it's best but I belly-laughed out loud a couple of times during it.

I ended up enjoying Back to Earth as long as I watched it as light entertainment scifi show like Warehouse 13/ Eureka so maybe I was a little more optimistic than many and still I was surprised how much I liked last nights episode. It was a proper old fashion comedy.
My not so inner geek did wonder how far they had travelled because it seems as the show progresses they find themselves in more and more civilised territory. JMS even seems to have some infrastructure up and running here.

Ruined by going for cheap gags like the Holograms/Synth pulling a stupid face when the resentment overload. OK, it was based on an extreme version of Chris Barrie's Rimmer's expression when he is showing resentment, but it was just painful to look at. I'm not saying physical comedy or the occasional cheap laugh is out of place in Red Dwarf, but this was too cheap a laugh for my taste. There would have been nothing lost by just having them cock their head to one side in "shut down" and give them the beach ball eyes.
All said and done, it was ok, albeit a little slow moving at times. Much better than 7/8/Back To Earth. This was a very Rimmer episode, hopefully Lister and Kryten will get their fair share of episodes with Cat on the side just doing his thing.
"Was he Swedish?" was great, managed to alter the delivery of the obvious gag that Cat was too going to know the answer to the question.
Countdown to thread being merged with other Red Dward thread - T Minus...

I thought it started off shakily, with laboured jokes and five or ten minutes of a very annoying laughter track, but then found its stride and I found some parts very funny, particularly the lateral thinking scene, some Rimmer moments and Lister's sub-plot.
It was an interesting choice of storyline, in that it looked at a particular aspect of Rimmer that hasn't been so fully or directly addressed before.
I didn't like Kryten's costume/make up - the neck's too human. And they all look almost too old for the roles now, but I suspect that the march of time will be a theme that's addressed during the series; you could say that it was to some extent in this episode with Rimmer's self-inspection, but I'm getting over-analytical.

I was wondering what was up with Kryten's look too. He was more noticeably pale. Then again, he has changed his appearance before IIRC.

True, and Robert Llewellen's girth causes the mid section plate to stick out.
The colour is more like the original costume from the Series 2 pre. Llewellen, but at least he's not wearing lipstick!

I think Kryten changes appearance every series. I suspect this design is to make it more comfortable for him. It just looks odd.

I dont know their age seems fairly irrelevant to me. In maybe any other show it could be an issue, but they dont need to be physically fit, theres no love interest element and no real need to mature from the people they were 20 years earlier. Its just a bunch of castaways trapped together forever and ever.

couple that with the changes in viewing habits and I'd be inclined to say it probably matches them, if not beat them.

Also I think a lot of people might have been put off by back to Earth, they lost a million viewers by part three. I see them getting back some more of that million after the positive response to Trojan.
