At least I now know when I will be unemployed so can plan for it. Thankgoodness I am shot of an expensive private rented flat end of Ausgust or I don't know what I'd do.
Johnson's announcement has put the shits up me. I went out for a 90 minute walk to work off the anxiety. What he doesn't realise is that vacancies have dried up due to the crisis. It isn't that people don't want to work!
I moved to NW England last year as it was an area with loads of jobs going. I had no problem finding vacancies to apply for and had a 50% hit rate for interviews (on phone or face to face) and so was able to find work. I've been actively looking for a new job (as my current contract runs out in December and I am on furlough anyway) 5 days a week. In the last month I've only found one job to apply for (no interview). I've got 20 years experience in Social Care, a degree, a post graduate diploma and am doing another degree (which I have enough academic credits towards to reach diploma level as of the end of this month). But at the end of the day I can only apply for jobs if they exist. The same as the other 9 million out there.
I don't want to be on furlough for months and months. I want to work.

Latest version of PHE map, including both pillars of testing (Hospital and Community) www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-53280238(for a previous week's version see https://twitter.com/Thekingstonecho/status/1277875391668146176?s=20) On the one hand It's turned the numbers into a like for like comparison which is good. On the other it's impossible to extract the actual raw data. Armed with the knowledge there's 182,000 people in Swindon I know there were less than 18 new cases here last week. As time goes on the actual data is getting harder and harder to get at.

It's a pity really. A month or two back, information like this was available in the local press down to the level of boroughs, but obviously at this point the public aren't allowed to know that sort of thing for fear they may be able to have an informed opinion.

It's a pity really. A month or two back, information like this was available in the local press down to the level of boroughs, but obviously at this point the public aren't allowed to know that sort of thing for fear they may be able to have an informed opinion. Most people's decisions seem to be based on a combination of their predisposition/attitude to risk generally, their predisposition to government messaging (and which government), the media and social media they follow, their attitude to life and living, and other factors, with actual scientific data in the public domain some way down the list. In the medium to long term I'd like to see people encouraged to make more informed decisions, but that requires more than just publishing data. It involves educating people from a young age about assessing relative risk, getting a feel for the range of different sources of risk, from climate change to road traffic accidents to obesity to terrorism to mental health risks to the health impacts of unemployment, and so on - and also short-term vs long-term risk - so that when things like this come along people can weigh up the risks to themselves and those they interact with and get the balance right. Which is easy for me to say, as someone who's not a teacher. And realising now's not the best time to list things that should be taught more in schools... Martin

It was while I watched the Chanceller's statement yesterday about ending the furlough scheme (while infection and death rates are high) in October that I knew with 100% certainty I will be unemployed soon. That £1000 bonus won't be enough for most employers (and some of them will then just dump staff after 31st January anyway).
What was the point of the furlough scheme if it was never intended to run long enough until workers were able to return to work? All it has done has given us "false hope" (to use the Government's own term) and pushed unemployment (of over 9 million people) from Spring to Autumn/Winter.
Bastards. Complete betrayal of working people.

I did the best I could not to kill someone while screaming obscenities about the government on last night's Zoom call.
No, I do not think the chancellor and government are doing a good job, How the **** can you think that? They're all bent, hopeless chancers, charlatans, inexperienced nobodies we hadn't heard of a year ago or just plain evil!!

I look forward to chanting 'EAT OUT TO HELP OUT' and 'BUILD BUILD BUILD' when I end up on the dole. I've been actively looking for work as I anticipated these events but there are significantly less vacancies. There just aren't many jobs for me to apply for. The furlough scheme was keeping the wolf from the door and me away from unsafe public transport.

I suspect they genuinely thought it wouldn't go on this long when it began. Herd immunity etc.

But they denied herd immunity was ever a plan. Even though they told us it was.
Anoyher massive swath of layoffs today. Businesses are passing their judgement on job bonuses and eating out to help out.
If only there was something called Universal Income. Wouldn't that be handy in These Times.

Also I see the UK is choosing not to join the EU coronavirus vaccine scheme because obviously Brexit trumps maximising the chances of using every effort you can possibly make to stop people dying. Of course, such a scheme may not work but surely for fuck sakes, EVERY attempt should be made?
I can understand why things are opening up, but there is no pausing to check the lag in data for death and infection rates before proceeding. It seems to be a tearing rush now. Only 7 days after the last restrictions were lifted, more are being lifted! There hasn't been time yet to see the effect of the last change! Also, increasingly pissed off at the phrase of 'THE SCIENCE'. There is no such thing as THE SCIENCE. There are lots of different Sciences which do different clever things and there is not a monolith consensus for many branches of it. Though if any Scientists think I have misunderstood, please correct me!
I do worry about our chums in countries such as Brazil and the US. Their political leaders appear to be utterly insane. Germany and New Zealand appear to have competetent leaders who (gasp) even publically admit when they have made cock-ups. Heck, the New Zealand top bananas have even taken a pay cut!

Even if there was a singular 'The Science' we should pay attention to there are still too many uncertainties and unknowns here to say anything other than we should be taking care to understand everything we do in this has indefinable risk and the wiser course of action is to tread very carefully.
Of course that is not what The Science our government is using says.

They're going to move the location of the chocolates in the supermarkets? I'd rather we joined the EU vaccine scheme and held our nerve on measures that would prevent a second wave entirely.

Yes, but if we do this plan instead we can blame The People for getting the virus because they are Too Fat. It's the next logical extension after blaming Public Health England and carers.
Still amazed at the lack of clarity over wearing masks in shops (which is somewhat clearer in Scotland). I started wearing a mask in shops a week ago as medical sources advised the public to do so. I'm not waiting for the Government to announce something everyone else has already been doing for weeks.

Working from home and not having to exert a muscle to commute is not going to help with the nation's obesity.
Re: face coverings, I have three standing by but have yet to use them as I have so far successfully avoided the crowded or poorly ventilated spaces where they would actually make a difference, and they have downsides in terms of connecting/communicating with your fellow human beings. If and when the law in Wales requires me to wear them in more situations than those where I consider the likely benefits to outweigh the costs, I will of course do so.

Talking of face masks and communicating, you can get ones with a see-through bit over the mouth. Various hearing loss charities have recommended them to help folk who rely on lip reading.
