I've been meaning to make a thread for this, but I could never remember when I'm here.
This is one of my absolute favorite shows on air, currently. And this season has been really intense. >_< Last sunday's episode.... damn.
Dale, Glenn, Hershel, T-Dog, and Daryl are my favorite characters.

Alright. I just wanted to make sure. I don't know any fans, so I've had no clue what speculation is out there.
I knew a group on another board, but all they do is bash the show and talk about how horrible each new episode was. Didn't really feel welcome to contribute, there.

I would agree about the tuning in part, but I suppose that can be harder than one would think.
That was my initial thought, "if you hate it, just don't watch it." But then I realized it's probably a case like me and TFP:
I hate it. It's awful. The writing is so bland and dull, and full of glaring plotholes and forgotten major plots, with characters who never evolve, and never become anything more than one trick ponies.
But week after week, I keep tuning in because I desperately WANT to love it, and I want it to improve.
And I do voice my disappointment.
However I try to not make others feel bad about loving it (and if i ever do, anyone is free to say so).
And thats the atmosphere of the other group for Walking Dead. Whether intentional or not, they make me feel bad about enjoying it.

The banding together of the survivors in a post-apocalyptic world is the main drawing factor for me. I know what you mean about the characters. Season 5 will determine who out of the main 16 will stay and go... Certain members of the chosen few are definitely writers favorites (Daryl, Maggie etc).

Unless there's something more to it (usually leaning more to comedy, like zombie land or warm bodies), I never pay any attention to zombie movies or zombie anything. But Walking Dead is soooo much more! Zombie movies never do it for me because the situation doesnt wrap up in two hours. So it's hard to get emotionally invested in these guys who get trapped in a shopping mall for a night, when after they get out you still would want to know "what next?" Walking dead has the "what happens next?" So I can get invested in the characters. And ZOMG!!! THE SCARIEST THINGS IN THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE ARE THE PEOPLE! |

The people certainly are at their worst in the post-apocalyptic scenario.

Okay, season 7 premier was awful. I don't mean awful in poorly written or bad episode, but awful in that it was awful to watch. I almost threw up, it hit me so hard. Spoilers to follow. After a week to process it, I realized two things.
1) Rick’s group is the worst thing that ever happened to Alexandria.
Alexandria was doing alright.
He barged in all “You need us. You cain’t do it on yer own. Ain’t that right Coral?”
And then gets all their leaders killed, gets them attacked by Wolves and overrun with zombies, and now they’re owned by Negan, who never heard of them before.
2) POOR TARA! Dude, when she left, everything was dandy. Now her girlfriend’s dead, her newfound brother is dead, and her newfound sister might be miscarrying a baby she doesn’t even know about.
And she has no clue about any of it! |

Season 8, despite "all out war!!!" as the tag line, sure seemed to be much less tense than 7 was. Spoiler for those who've not seen it: I kinda wish Dwight went to Fear with Morgan. I really like his arc, and feel like he deserves to be redeemed. But just not with Rick's group. He deserves another chance, but they also deserve to be free of him, given everything he did. |

Would have liked that character to have had his comics role played out instead.
Fear The Walking Dead is getting pretty good. Now that a character from the main show has also hooked up with the rest of the group too.

I kinda disagree. I don't think Morgan has anything to do with why this season of Fear has been so good. I'm willing to say it's riveting. I've always thought Fear was pretty good (some parts better than others. The boat, and Mexico were the better parts. Daniel was always good, and I like Nick's general story.) But as Fear has no source material, they have a much wider range to go, where as TWD takes liberties, but still basically follows the comic. Personally I dislike Fear's use of TWD's "Nobody's safe" trope because of this, because I kinda feel like Fear's basic story should be about a family trying to survive intact. If someone dies, then I feel it should be a major plot element, to further the story being told, rather than TWD's largely shock value style deaths. TWD is about communities trying to rebuild, one way or another. It's always been this. Fear should be about families. Madison and Travis trying to keep their children alive and together. Strand trying to find a family, even if he doesn't realize it. Daniel trying to protect Ophelia. Even the racist ranch, and the first nation survivors extend this basic theme. It's just sad to me that the writers don't focus on this as much as they try to copy TWD's basic formula. But back on topic, I feel this season has been so sharp, thanks to the sudden narrative shift. They jumped ahead however many years to catch up to Morgan's timeline, and we find the Fear cast in a completely different state (literally and figuratively). And are using different methods to flash back and tell how they got to this point. That's something we've never seen in TWD, and is dramatically setting it apart, instead of just being "The Walking Dead, but with different people." That's why I think Fear has been so much better this season that it has been. It's finally veering off on it's own, instead of being "TWD, but on a boat. TWD, but in a hotel. TWD, but on a ranch. TWD, but on a dam." |

I think that additional character may have helped draw a lot more viewers Fear's way. More or less leverage to get newer viewers interested in that show. Going by reactions I've witnessed elsewhere, its worked. Agreed that Fear was starting to get a lot better beforehand anyway, and Season 3 pushed an envelope or two.
Fear needs to air on Fox in the UK. A lot of fans this end still can't watch it if they wanted to.

The last nine years boils down to... ...goddamn horse. Scott M. Gimple appeared on Talking Dead afterwords and dropped some bombs. I dunno if you guys watch Talking Dead, or even if you get it. But do not click before watching "What Comes After" AMC will basically become The Walking Dead Channel. Rick Grimes' story will continue in a series of feature films. Gimple says made for television, but will have the scope, budget, and cinematography of actual movies.
That's not all. There will be more movies. There will be miniseries. There may or may not be a third ongoing series.
They will be about current characters. They will be about past characters. They will be about new characters. They will take place all around the world. They will take place in the past, present, and future.
The way he talked, they're taking as expansive and slow burning as the MCU has been. As in, They're not gonna throw it all at us at once.
And I don't know how I feel about this. Because on one hand, we're getting to see the rest of the world in what sounds like some innovative ways. We get to see the stories and past of some characters in ways that do not disrupt the flow and stories of the existing shows. In the only way that's available to do so.
On the other hand, TWD and Fear are both bery difficult and emotionally exhausting shows to watch, and this is beginning to sound like too much. |

They were weirdly vague on the baby.
Actually quite enjoyed last nights episode. There was only the one stupid bit of writing when Eugene decided to jump rather than get person whose name I still cant be bothered to learn* to come and pick it up. So abig improvement on most weeks.
Judith seems much less annoying than Coral at that age. So the writers have learnt from their predecessors.
Bonus points for Carol being badass again.
* still the problem with this show. I can't think of any other show Ive watched properly were I cant remember regular characters names when the've been in the show for years. |

The baby's name is Rick Jr. RJ. So they weren't being intentionally vague, I just think it wasn't as obviously Rick's as the writers thought at first. |

On a side note, TWD is an unusually hard show to learn characters names, and especially hard for me to learn faces.
How long has it been since Aaron was introduced? And it's only been just now that I finally started remembering his name. And I still have to relearn how to recognize him at the start of every half season. (I never did get to where I could remember his husband's name)
But I learned Jerry, immediately!

Thats the thing, Jerry was instantly interesting even though I still have no idea if hes part of the main cast or not.
Thats the other thing so many people are constantly introduced its very hard to work out out if they are regulars or not. Plenty of times Ive assummed someone is just an extra with the odd line before realising they've been around for 3 years and probably are part of the main cast.
