We've known what colour they are for ages: there's a picture on the back of the Insecticons box!

I know I'm just venting my frustration. Really. Why do the Insecticons and the cones keep their colours but the triples don't. Bad Hasbro! Bad!

Boring is good when 2/3 of the box have never been reissued save in a Japanese convention/show exclusive set

Agreed. I got the Takara reissue Thrust for Christmas back in 2002. Dirge and Ramjet were originals. It's good to see them back in circulation. The Four Star knockoffs are things of beauty. I think I saw the Grimlock one in Malaysia back in 2000. I might have bought it but I got my pocket dipped and lost all my spending money -Nick

Pfft. You people have no sense of adventure. Or the ridiculous. (Although I totally see your point. Original colours are the best. :-) )

I would say these make good "lost G2s," but really the decos aren't abstract enough. They don't hit the "wtf?" mark, they just fail to make sense in any form. They have no prior relations to the characters, or the alt modes, and honest they're not that good on their own merits.

At a real stretch, they both can be interrupted as the Duocons. Blitzwing as Flywheels works better. Battletrap sort of works as a G2 version of Battletraps colours. The sort of G2 upgrade Starscream got as a brighter version of the original. Even then it's hard to explain the orange.

Blitzwing looks quite good like that. Those colours may even be better than the original. But he had no place anywhere looking like that. Superfluous is the word. Astrotrain meanwhile is just a mess. He looks like one of those mould tests they do where all the parts are just random colours of whatever plastic they're trying to use up. He doesn't even rate as superfluous. The word for him is exasperating.

I like Astrotrain (which will likely comes as little surprise), but I just saw a pic of Anime Astrotrain and those colours do look so good.

Is there an actual reason for him being that colour then? I mean apart from the duocon similarity?

I actually don't mind these colour schemes really - I have seen far odder colour schemes on mecha than that Astrotrain scheme, and the red Blitzwing kind of tickles my "display team colours" nerve.
I think that if they had never been reissued previously I would be a bit miffed that they weren't doing the original colour schemes. But as it is I quite like the way these look. Space considerations, and the fact that I have previously owned both of them already militate against my being likely to pick them up, but I do think that they look quite good.

Kapow still have the encore Twincast in stock if you're desperate for one in silly colours.
My own concern is whether the rest of my 85's are going to turn their noses up at having reissues in the ranks. I must discuss this with Jetfire. He'll keep the others in line.

Speaking of kapow, I've just noticed they have preorders up for the cone heads. £65. Which is not bad at all if you consider the Insecticons are £45 and the triples £55.

£45 for the Insecticons looks very competitive compared to the $79.99 K-Mart wanted. £15 per Insecticon feels a little high but is probably about right these days. The Triplechangers for £55 (£60 at full price) looks a little high in comparison (£27.50 each). I think we might see these a little cheaper later when they don't sell because of the mental colours. 85 jets for £65 (£70) is £22 per jet. Absolute steal. Especially as it turns out I don't have a Commemorative Series Dirge like I thought. Zero hesitation. The extras with Perceptor & Blaster intrigue me but I already have BOTH toys, and have those cassettes twice over. Same three tapes were with the SDCC reissue Blaster, nobody loves Rewind :-( So the extras are going to have to be REALLY special.

Listening to my regular batch of podcasts it's a little worrying that reports of the Platinum Insecticons are saying they're substandard - stickers that don't stick and an inferior grade of plastic being used. There's a review on youtube that talks about this.
