Avengers Assemble:
What Phil was expecting: Fully updated entry profiles for the big three Avengers plus entries for all existing characters in new teams.
What Phil got: One page updates for Cap & Thor with some profiles of Z-list initiative recruits and villains.
VERY POOR SHOW !

There were decent Avengers mu's in 2004 & 2005. But that was a while back and there's no reason why this couldn't have been an updated comprehensive resource. To be fair the solicitations did warn me - as they now have about the up & coming Phoenix handbook !

Official Handbook to the Marvel Universe Update (1 of 5): when the most prominent characters in a handbook are Gladiator, Wyatt Wingfoot, The Midgard Serpent and Xemu the Titan do I sense the bottom of the barrel being scraped ? I await a post Siege volume with updated Cap, Thor & Iron Man profiles. MU Update 2 this week

The Thanos Sourcebook wasn't too bad. Most of the first half was an illustrated history of Thanos, followed by a recap of modern cosmic events (Annihilation and onwards) then the remainder of the second half is a series of half page profiles of your major cosmic players. Decent enough package especially for us who'd Thanos and cosmic fu is weak.

Well Marvel Universe Update #3 was a bit better than the previous volumes. Red Hulk - although it's just a page and effectively an add on for the previous Thunderbolt Ross entry, Orson Randall, and quite a few others I'd heard of. Sadly one of the entries proved a bit spoilerific for something I'm reading in trades but hey ho.

Heroic Age: Heroes and Heroic Age: Villains: 2 handbooks, 3 entires per page with a quick bio on each person/group. Not traditional MU but a good introduction to the characters in the Marvel Universe without going into their detail. A third volume, Heroic Age: X-Men is due.

Got the Thor: Asgard's Avenger book today. A curious mix of prominant and Z-list characters with a few obvious ommisions: Decent Asgard, Jane Foster, Fafnir, The Destroyer, Malekith, Karnilla, Volstagg & Surtur entries (several of which have been done before), but the Thor is a one page update and there's no Baldar, Sif, Heimdall, Odin, Loki, Fandrall, Hogan or Beta Ray Bill entries and some of the others included are a tad obscure..... I'm not sure there's been a dedicated Thor handbook - he was dead when the themed MU ones launched in 2004ish. In related news I sight an OHOTMU A-Z TPB on Amazon UK. Click, click, click, thank you.

I walked into my LCS yesterday and found a X-Men handbook on the shelve. All one page updates and Z-listers. Oh and Maddison Jeffries which, as big a fan as I am, I have to admit isn't the most well known her in the world.
If you're doing these handbooks too support the film releases then make them more prominant characters.
