Legion of Superheroes#50: Well, I can see why the writer pleaded for even one more issue to wrap up his storyline before this title was cancelled. This issue certainly manages to wrap up the main plot, but it is at the cost of denying most of the running sub-plots any resolution at all. In order to cram in the ending of the main "Earth under attack" story we have the whole thing going from "imminent attack on Earth", the "Galactic siege on the United Planets" to getting resolving in the space of a single issue. It doesn't lack for pace, but it feels like what it is - a desperate race to get as much tied up as possible before editorial turn out the lights. The cost is entire sub-plots - including a major one of Timber Wolf being framed for a brutal assault on a Legionnaire (actually carried out by another member of the Legion) - simply disappear between #49 and #50. Don't get me wrong, it is perfectly readable - it is just hard pushed to get everything done before they turn out the lights. It is a shame, I shall miss this title as the Legion disappears once more into publishing limbo for a while.
It seems to be that every time they relaunch the Legion its survivability decreases slightly. Even I, a die-hard Legion fan, am starting to wonder whether the jig is well and truly up.

Comic Book Comics #3: Somewhat late, but I do give small press publishers somewhat more leeway than the Big Two what them generally being done by folk between actual living wage jobs. Anyhow, this is as solid as the first two, covering the demise of EC Comics and the rise of the Comic Code Authority along with the pop art scene. On the edges of the story hovers King Kirby. Highly engaging stuff, well worth $4 : I got a whole hour's reading out of it. Recommended. It's the only US floppy I still pick up. -Ralph

New Avengers #48 so..... Essentially this is all about reorganising the team and looking for the baby. We know Iron Fist is off. Last page is a bit interesting, I'm torn between out of character or do anything for his daughter..... New Avengers #49 Well this issue resolves that plot thread very quickly on all accounts and ends with Cage much more in character. Dark Avengers #2 Big battle between Doom & LeFey which draws the Dark Avengers in .... who get their bottoms handed to them. Uncanny X-Men #506 Lots of bits this issue with the science team getting a new recruit and Peter finding out what the Russians were up to. Bit of a non issue really. X-Men: Legacy #221 Whereas here we get Xavier, Gambit and Rogue trapped in various Danger Room simulations of past battles. Washed over me a bit.

X-Factor #40
This got bought when I needed something to pad the postage cost of getting the Dark Reign handbook. Continues the upturn shown in the previous issue with a great shock ending.
New Avengers #50
Big fight. Except the fight isn't Avengers vs Dark Avengers as you're expecting. oh no. Osbourne sets the Hood and his gang on the Avengers. Their revenge at the end of the issue is quite nice though
Mighty Avengers #22
Didn't work so well for me this, the previous issue was great, this less so.
X-Force #12
X-Force is the "where it's at" book for me at the moment. The threat is real, there's a sense of urgency and it just works better than the main X-Men titles. Here another of Bastion's "recreations" the Leper Queen (who I'd never heard of before) is using a modified legacy virus to kill mutants with their powers overloading taking out large numbers of humans to fuel anti mutant feeling. So X-Force is going to find her. But Cyclops has another new mission for them ....
New Avengers: The Reunion #1 ?
Didn't like the preview, but this turned out to be much better than expected with the Clint & Bucky stuff a real highlight
EX MACHINA SPECIAL #4 (MR) $3.99
Why don't people recycle comics ? Vaughan's enviromental statement. I'm suspecting this is printed on recycled stock too.
Dark Avengers 3 We'd seen the Sentry stuff at the start in the preview, the rest is just more of the Avengers getting thrashed by Morganna up till the end of the issue.
Uncanny X-Men #507 The on;ly thing that stood out for me was Hank finding out about Warren. Washed over me. I think the cast is too large at the mo, and it doesn't feel like a team book with each issue highlighting just a couple of characters.
X-Men: Legacy #222 The further adventures of Prof X bring him deeper into the enviroment for Rogue that Danger has created. OK.
X-Factor #41 Continues where the previous issue left off. PD's asking people not to spoil so I won't. I removed this from my pull list a few months back but it's going back on. X-Factor was harmed by it's involvements in crossovers, loosing two characters in the process and limping along for a while. Back on form now.
X-Force #13 Oh it all just goes so so wrong for the characters this issue. Big ending that you could see coming some distance off leaves a long standing X character dead and X-Force in the future. Now we have the cable crossover....

I forgot to mention that original series artist Clayton Crain is back and these look superb ! X-Men Manifest Destiny Nightcrawler Touted as the issue where Nightcrawler leaves the X-Men. Not touted as the issue where he comes back at the end. I've been conned.

Mighty Avengers #23
Swift wrap up to Slott's first story with Pym coming out of this issue better than last time - he gets it right and Stark gets it wrong. Nice ending, enexpected but makes total sense
New Avengers #51
Start of a new storyline about the new Sourcerer Supreme. Loved the round the table meeting
New Avengers Reunion 2
More Clint & Bobbi fun. Another decent last page revelation
X-Force/Cable: Messiah War Prologue
So we left X-Force being transported off to the future to retrieve Cable & Hope - this issue recaps what Cable's been up to & why he's not come back, what Bishops been doing and who Bishop's made friends with so i don't feel I've missed the 12 issues of Cable I didn't buy.
Though the moment X-Force step into the future they run into someone they know .... Deadpool, who's taken the long way round
Cable 13
More of the same.
Secret Warriors 2 & 3
These turned up in my slot by accident, then Jonathan stepped on them so they couldn't go back. But they're rather good. It's all about rebuilding Hydra.

It had been ages since I picked up any individual comics and the other day the urge grabbed. I doubt the urge will grab me anytime soon though as only 3 comics cost £10.50! Yes, we now live in an age of 3 comics costing more than a tenner.
Anyway:
RUINS: Reprint of a Warren Ellis story from 1995 which is about a horrible and grim alternate version of the Marvel Universe. Unfortunately, there seems no point to it at all other than 'let's do a grim and horrible version of the Marvel Universe' and so it comes across as a bit juvenile. Perhaps it worked better in the context of 1995 comics? Avoid.
MARVEL ASSISTANT-SIZED SPECTACULAR #1: Marvel's assistant editor's have wacky adventures inbetween introducing inventory strips, which is as bad as it sounds. So why did I buy it? Purely because it contains the last Mini-Marvels strip, which is hilarious and has Hawkeye in it. Why MM has been canned in favour of the cynical crafted-by-committee-demographically-targeted Super-Hero Squad escapes me.
SEAGUY: SLAVES OF MICKEY EYE #1: At last! The return of Seaguy. The original 3-issue series was packed with story and the tradition continues here. Funny, sad and weird, I shall be back for #2. Happy to put down cash for single issue comics where lots of stuff actually happens.

Due to my long-standing fascination with Marvel's Sub-Mariner - I picked up 'Sub-Mariner Comics' #1 in FP yesterday. The £3 pricetag was a bit of a shocker - but there was enough content to warrant the price. Good solid, strightforward stuff, with some classic reprints. Highly recommended for those interested in the tales of the Prince Namor McKenzie - The Savage Sub-Mariner.

Secret Warriors 2 & 3These turned up in my slot by accident, then Jonathan stepped on them so they couldn't go back. But they're rather good. It's all about rebuilding Hydra. Secret Warriors 1 This book has something. It should stink like something that comes out of my son's bottom but it doesn't. I'm suspecting this is due to Jonathan Hickman's co-plotting (with Bendis) and scripting. There's a good pace to the issues and they've bought back a decent villain from about five years back. Worth a look.

UNCANNY X-MEN #508 I ask mysellf what are they doing with Psylocke and where did they gfet her from. Odd. But on the plus side - Northstar ! With Aurora and Maddison Jeffries in the same issue that makes it a big Alpha Flight reunion.
X-MEN: LEGACY #223 More stuff with Danger. Problem here is I'e just read some issues that reminded me that Bastion ripped all the tech inc Danger Room out of the X-Mansion in Operation Zero Tolerance. So how did it get back there ?
ASTONISHING X-MEN #29 This hasn';t been holding my attention, though this issue was a little better than most apart from nobody having seen Forge for ages. Everyone forget about him being hospitalised with the X-Men during Messiah Complex then ?
X-Factor 42 Fab stuff
X-FORCE #14 Not such a great issue this week. Lots more fighting Stryfe's goons. Bring em home and lets got on with the regular stuff.
Ex Machina 41 Great as ever - Mitch announces his intention not to run for a second term so he can concentrate on doing the job.
MIGHTY AVENGERS #24 Loki uses "his" Avengers to wind up Norman. Gee, cracks already in Norman's organisation....
NEW AVENGERS #52 More questing for the Sourcerer Supreme with the NA's using Dr Strange to get at the Hood.

UNCANNY X-MEN #508 I ask mysellf what are they doing with Psylocke and where did they gfet her from. Odd. UNCANNY X-MEN #509 Ok, that clears that up somewhat. Aklmost felt like the X-Men for a while in there too. Dark Avengers 4 Ties up the loose ends in Latveria. Not the greatest issue of the series Dark Reign: Cabal One shot with 5 tales of each of Norman's mates taking center stage. Variable, the Doom one is nice though

C-c-crosspostin' magicspaceradiation.blogspot.com/2009/05/blues-comic-bag-070509.htmlFlash: Rebirth #2 I loved Geoff John's Flash run, I loved Green Lantern: Rebirth, but I'm not feeling this series at all yet. Before Green Lantern: Rebirth I only had the vaguest idea about any of the characters and settings and yet it made so much sense. Flash on the other hand, doesn't really have a focus. Barry Allen has returned, he's a bit boring, he doesn't really think he should be back either and... nothing really. There's no big 'moments' like in Green Lantern, no real set-ups or payoffs, no real world-building. It is simply Barry Allen hanging about and accidentally killing bad 90s villains. Maybe it will take some more time to really kick off. I do generally trust Geoff Johns, but here it seems to be a story without any real driving force. Green Lantern: Rebirth was about the return of Hal Jordon, but here, Barry has already returned and it is about finding him a place in the DC universe, which hasn't been exactly thrilling yet. I did think the 'surprise' ending was pretty obvious from issue one, but I have no idea where it will go from thereon in. Perhaps there is a chance and this seemingly cursed title will get good again. Sea Guy - Slaves of Mickey Eye #2I liked the first Sea Guy although I don't think I really 'got' it, but I'm loving the sequel. Morrison's skill is that he makes the absurd seem totally logical and sane. In this issue, Sea Guy is rescued by Tree Guy, Pea Guy and Three Guy (who is also Pea Guy and Tree Guy) and then becomes a bull-dresser in a coastal resort, facing bulls in the ring and forcing them to dress in women's lingerie. There is probably some sort of deep and meaningful subtext (actually probably not), but really I'm here for the ride and like Doc Hero, I just don't want to get off. Final Crisis Aftermath: Run #1The Human Flame is evil. Oh yeah! Bad to the bone like an evilly evil man. He punches women and has shootouts in kids playgrounds and burns the faces off police officers until they are screaming skeletons. Did I mention he is evil? He is also hairy all over, covered in hair. Even his ass, which we get to see in detail as he races down the street, looking for women and children to kill. I wasn't expecting much from the Final Crisis Aftermath minis, given the teams and pitches. And DC didn't disappoint. Matthew Sturges seems to completely miss the point, that the Human Flame was meant to be a rubbish, useless, harmless villain who got in too over his head in Final Crisis. Writing a series about him on the run murdering people and being hairy just seems... pointless. Run. Run away from this. Fast. Power Girl #1With the exception of the excellent Jonah Hex, I have a deal with Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti. I don't expect anything they write to be good in any way, and they don't try. That said, Power Girl has a lot going for it. The art is fantastic, the titular character really needs her moment in the spotlight (and perhaps a more decent costume) and it is good to see DC trying to push characters who aren't the core cast. Unfortunately it doesn't really work. There's no attempt to do any real characterisation, no motives, basically stuff just happens. I found it very uninvolving, very 'going through the motions'. Power Girl magically sets up a technology company and then robots invade and she is beamed up to a flying saucer. That's pretty much the entire issue. However there is a large focus on breasts and boobies and bums, so if you like that sort of cheesecake then this book is for you. Also that cover is terrible, Christ. Props to DC for trying, but please try harder next time. Irredeemable #2 Mark Waid is going for the slow burn here it seems, in a comic series about ‘Superman’ (or rather, ‘The Plutonian’) gone bad. Issue 1 seemed to be mostly generic teasing backstory, and once more issue 2 is a bit more teasing backstory. Nothing really happens, there’s no buildup or payoff to anything, and it doesn’t even connect to the first issue that well. I can take the idea of world-building but the pace is painfully slow. Which is a shame because the core idea is a good one and has worked well in the past. However without really seeing much, the Plutonian is hardly built up as a threat at all. But it is Mark Waid, so I will give him a chance.

I will never be able to take Power Girl seriously as a proper character rather than a crap T&A wank fantasy for as long as the character design is based on ludicrously enormous breasts barely contained within a big costume with a big hole in the chest. Comics need to move on from that sort of thing. There is proper porn available for the masses in 2009, FFS!
