On a tangent, the Edinburger library system has moved to a robot till system so books are no longer stamped! This displeases me as I can no longer see how much a book has been taken out previously. I always liked to know if a poor book had spent years on a shelf without anyone taking it out and would take pity on it. Library books should be stamped with the return date on the little card, damn it!

Edinburgh uni runs a robot system now as well. The amount of times I kept having overdue books because they were no longer stamped...

No stamps... That feels wrong to me. The Stamping of The Books is a part of the library ritual as far as I am concerned. It wouldn't feel right for them to not be properly issued by the Keepers of the Books.

We now just have a thin slip of paper that is easily lost with the return date on it...and only one sip is provided if more than one book is taken out! Thus, I generally have many paranoia log-ins to the online system to check.

Not on the Burger system, no, but the online account is so quick and easy to check I don't mind.

It is a great system. I can search for a book and pull up full details of it including the cover image, publishing details and description from the back. I can see how many copies there are, which libraries they are in, which section of that library they are in and when their earliest return date is if they are out on loan. I can put a request in for any book (whether out on loan or on a shelf) and request it be sent to any other library I like to pick up. I can do all this within 60 seconds.
Library loans are for three weeks. If I can't get it back on time, 10 seconds later I can have it renewed for another 3 weeks (unless someone has put a request in for it). Audio book loans are only 40p.
If I am having a casual search and see books I might want to read at some later point, I can store all the details in any number of user created lists on my account page. That way I won't forget or can go into my lists and have a browse at what had caught my fancy previously as a reminder.
Yes. 2014 is the year when I use the library system much more extensively! Like many folk, I have a falling income so this will be a good way of keeping up with my reading. Also, it will help stop me cluttering up the flat with books I only read once (which I am bad at doing!).

Found myself at a loose end between work duties so popped into a library. Had a chat with a young lad assisting. He thought it was a shame that "no-one ever came in to look at them" (indicating the vast piles of comic book collected editions). Librarian thought it was sad that so many people don't realise that libraries have loads of stuff. "It's not just Dickens in here." I agreed.
The library was situated in a poorer area of Edinburger. I'm glad it was there.

It's been a while since the Burger Central library got recent comic collections in but someone must have found some cash for new stock so I walked out with 9 new release titles this week. Had to leave another 2 behind for now due to space in my bag. Had I went to a comic shop this haul would have cost about £140 (maybe deduct £30-40 for online deals/digital versions). This costs me £0.00. Some of these are titles I wouldn't be sure about spending £15-20 a pop to try or couldn't afford or would pass on due to limited space at home (I do still buy physical comics to read). This is why libraries are good.
Use them or they go away in the sad climate of austerity we live in.

Indeed - Libraries are an absolute godsend. I made a fair amount of use of mine before, but recently when I have been on a rather restricted income it has been a wonderful resource.
In fact, I have discovered many authors I like because of libraries. C.J. Cherryh is probably my favourite living SF Author, and I would never have tried her stuff if the Alloa Library hadn't had a copy of "Hellburner" all those years ago. Likewise, Jack Campbell's "Lost Fleet" series was something I always wondered about, but not enough to drop nearly a tenner on in case it didn't agree with me. But thanks to the library I have read both the original series and almost all of its spin-offs, and must get around to checking if they have got in the two new books published this year yet.
I agree - support your local library, they are wonderful resources to have. (And I'm not just saying that because your local library may be my source of income in a year or so's time)

I have recently signed up to my local library. Use them or lose them.
Certain librarians are also lovely.

I've just had my first ever eye test and reactivated my dormant library card. Two things you don't do every day.
I was quite pleased to find the library was still there. Looks in better nick than the last time I went in there.

Excellent on both fronts.
My local library has just signed on to some epub type thing that has now given me access to ~150 Marvel graphic novels online. That should keep me busy for a while.

I'm wondering if I can gain as good an audiobook service as audible by using the library without the monthly cost. I have just reserved an audiobook online for 70p instead of whatever audible's monthly sub cost is.
Also, for work purposes I need to be much more clued up on children's fiction than I am. I went to smiths to buy an armload of current kids books to read and then thought, hang on...

Exactly. Use your libraries. Or lose it. Using the library for most of my reading needs these days. A little frustrating when I have so many of my own books still to read! But a splendid problem to have. Have tried a lot of things out I never would've tried otherwise.
Mrs M and I are working through the Harry Potter books in audio form whenever we go on longer drives. I've never read them and quite enjoying them so far. Sometimes downloaded from the library onto phone, occasionally physical CDs are borrowed. We don't seem to have a downloaded audio cost.

I am a big supporter of libraries and use them every week to borrow from and/or to sit in to read or study. I buy a heck of a lot of reading material too but having the library system is great for trying out new stuff. They are also nice places to sit and read in. Coffee shop prices can add up and pubs are often too noisy with loud sport on TV to relax in. -Ralph

Libraries are doing THE BEANO READING CHALLENGE. The idea is to read 6 library books over the summer. SOMEONE on here tells me they can use their influence to get me the free tat for doing this as, er, it is meant only for kids.
I go today to select 6 books to read!
