Just a funny little aside which I couldn't think of a better place to put. Found these two at German retail today, only a few days after the first UK sighting. Pay special attention to the figure on the left.

Those little figures look better than the DX ones - are they when you get them out the packs? I'm expecting to see RID toys turn up in £1 shops.

I think I figured out why I absolutely HATE the line gimmick of the nurid figures.
I've always had this irrational hatred of it, but I never fully understood why. It didn't make sense, because as far as gimmicks go, it's relatively unintrusive (unlike the minicon deployer gimmick for Drift and Fracture). I mean, sure the circle stickers are ugly. But it's not like they get in the way of the transformation or articulation or anything.
Except it's worthless. Ten years later, every armada minicon still activates every armada action feature. Every energon autobot can still combine with every other energon autobot. Every cyberkey still activates every cybertron action feature. Ten years from now, that app game these circle stickers are compatable with will not exist. And the asthetic design of these toys has been ruined in order to have those giant inset circles molded into them to showcase the stickers. On top of that, it is the weakest, most minimum effort imaginable to cash in on the Skylanders/Disney Infinity/Amibo craze. And it's also a gimmick that excludes many kids, due to being an app game.
So we have a giant circle permanently marring an entire generation of toys, for an external gimmick that will be dropped and unsupported literally as soon as Hasbro moves on to the next line.

I'm not too keen on the circle stickers myself and the one RID toy I have I haven't bothered with the app game thingy. The toy still works fine without the app feature though a child might see that differently.
I wonder if it's a difference between how children think of toys and how adults ie us think of them. Kid gets a toy, has fun with it for a while, gets older and moves on to something else and maybe forgets about it, ie some RID Transformers they had. Adult gets a toy, has fun with it for a while, keeps it for much longer and gets it out every now and then to play about with and so may notice that circle sticker app gimmick a bit more and get annoyed the game no longer exists.

Hmmm. Those are some excellent points from both of you. Yes, the circle app thing is a very short-term thing (which I've not tried myself), but, yes, do kids really think long-term when it comes to these toys? I would say, from my experience with children, in the majority of cases, no, no they don't. Yes, it does ruin potential future enjoyment and value, but given that Hasbro are simultaneously producing lines aimed at older collectors, I don't think they care.
Interesting points, though.

It wouldn't bother me if it wasn't such a halfassed grab at the Skylanders thing, which is a market I've been saying they should go after, for a while. I mean, it isn't even at the level of halfassed, honestly.
Because to be honest, I genuinely feel that that kind structure is both the next logical step in the evolution of transformers, as well as the only way to really get the kids reinvested in the line again. That hasbro reduces this this to a sticker that sorta has an effect on a little app game (the packaging says it "temporarily unlocks") that will stop being supported in a year or two shows that Hasbro really isn't aware of the power that Infinity and Skylanders has with kids. These are the two most popular "toy" lines out there right now. And they're not even actual toys, just static figurines.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is a proper full-on Skylanders type TF line within a couple of years, especially if Lego's version of that kind of thing takes off too.

First wave of Botshots came with codes to enter into an online battle game - so this is really just a continuation of that. Between Skylanders, Infinity (Disney/Marvel/Star Wars) and Amibo (Nintendo) there are a lot of products out there tying together video game/online to physical toys.
Whilst I also think its a passing fad - some early Transformers came with gimmicks like temporary tattoo's (I remember getting Triggercon Ruckus and putting the tattoo on my chest as a youngin).
With Transformers Hasbro has a very diverse market across young kids, older kids and adult collectors - long term they might want to tie up their online/video game strategy by having the physical toy give online/game boosts.
Having recently failed in the MMO-space with TF Universe this isn't something they should rush, so this wee app is probably their stop-gap effort.

I'm wondering if a Skylanders esque approach might be a way forward for the Legion figures? Small toy with weapon and base stand that interacts with game.
There again electronic interaction probably still rings some bad alarm bells at Hasbro connected with the words "Star Wars episode 1 comtech chips"
