I liked the idea of Nightcrawler as a priest, it's what came after it that sucked.

Yeah, which is a shame. I actually didn't mind his early few issues, and then it just went south.
Like his U.S. War Machine series. The first one was genuinely good, the second - urgh.

True. War Machine series 1 was a very enjoyable weekly black and white adventure comic. Series 2 was overblown CG pish.
RE: Nightcrawler. The character worked better for me when he was a priest. It made sense to me. Otherwise, he's a bit bland (except when in proper Excalibur).

Heresy Burns!
He was great in X-Men, although the wheels come off when Austen/Brubaker/Fraction come on board and either don't know how to write him, or don't bother doing anything with him. Dan Slott tried to get him for Mighty Avengers, PAD wanted him in X-Factor and they were rebuffed and then he was pointlessly killed off.
RAGE LEVELS RISING!!!

Now, now, I was not saying he was a bad character. Merely that on his own he's a bit dull. But have him a well written team-book as a supporting character and he works fine. He did very little for me in X-Men except when he was doing his priest stuff and suddenly became interesting.

The top 50 X-Men stories list is hotting up, there are six spots left Days of Future Past, God Loves Man Kills and Dark Phoenix saga haven't been in yet, nor has Morrison's E is for Extinction (but all his other stuff has) nor Wheddon's Gifted or Danger (but all his other stuff has), so that could be the top six, except Onslaught and Age of Apocalypse haven't been it yet either. I'd be pretty flabbergasted that AOA wouldn't make the cut at all, but then why would Danger not get in the top 50 when Wheddons other stories Torn made the top 30 or so, and Unstoppable even made the top ten? Really want to see how this plays out.

Haven't got Old Ghosts, mainly because I got the huge Uncanny X-Men omnibus from about 2008 or so that contains issue 94 (and Giant Size X-Men) through 130 something, and I've been waiting for Marvel to continue that. They seemed to have skipped forward and done two omnibuses of the 200s though, which I'd like to get one day.
Didn't vote in either of these polls, I could probably do a top 10 X-Men, but, despite having read every issue of the various Cable and X-Force titles and loads more besides, hardly any particular X-Men spin off title stories spring to mind as 'greatest ever'.

That's great news, though I'd really prefer it if it was just 40 odd issues of UXM instead of all the other stuff.
