Still one of my favourite comic artists.
Although I am not a fan of his work ethic and more recent work.

I too tend to prefer Lee's earlier work than to his current output (and lack thereoff). Although, I actually think that, of their early nineties work at least, I marginally prefer Portacio.

There us a rough energy to Portacio's work that isn't in the more polished Jim Lee which I find attractive. He also dies a slightly ungainly Cyclops which I like.

Phil! In my ongoing X-Men quest [obsession] I found a Claremont/Cockrum story I've never seen before. Special Edition X-Men #1 from 1983, reprints Giant Size X-Men #1 and then has a new 12 page back up story called "A Day Like Any Other" set around Kitty Pryde's 14th Birthday.
Has this ever been reprinted anywhere? Until the issue showed up at work I'd never even heard of it, now it lives with my Classic X-Men issues. More fool me for thinking I was nearly finished collecting X-Men comics.

The implication is it was an extra in #175. www.amazon.co.uk/Uncanny-X-Men-Scarlet-Glory-Various/dp/1846530970/Martin

Martin: it wasn't. I've owned UXM 175 and it isn't in there. That's the issue with mostly Paul Smith art and a little bit JRjr at the end. But it's around then Marvel published the comic James is refering to (which I did know existed - check the Bullpen Bulletins page of UXM 176 I think) so I can see why it might be in the poketbook then. As it stands that's probably the last X-Men comic Cockrum did. marvel.wikia.com/Special_Edition_X-Men_Vol_1_1There's a number of special edition around that time: Micronauts, Kree/Skrull war and Steranko Shield iirc

Well well well. The tiny text in the 'Scarlet in Glory' pocket book just says "Contains material originally published in magazine form as X-Men #169-175". But there it is, after seven full-length strips preceded by issue covers, "A Day Like Any Other" just follows straight on from "Phoenix" as if it was part of the same issue. Martin

Thank you Martin and Phil.
Upon further research it's also in Marvel Masterworks Uncanny X-Men Vol 8. That reprints #160-167, not sure where it's placed in there though, I would presume after issue #166 which came out the same time as Special Edition X-Men #1, but it may just be placed at the end of the volume after #167. And I wonder why Panini didn't put it in the previous pocketbook [Beyond the Farthest Star] to match up with the Masterworks reading order.
Also, looking at the Masterworks contents, why include that story, but none of the Classic X-Men back up strips. Some of which I notice have never been reprinted, and I doubt the edited pages from the Classic X-Men reprints of original issues have been reprinted. Hmm... looks like I also need to find a Bizarre Adventures #27.

Have you not read Bizarre Adventures 27? You're in for a treat! 2/3 of it are the very first X-Men I ever read when the Nightcrawler & Iceman were reprinted in an ancient Marvel UK Winter special: britishcomics.wikia.com/wiki/X-Men_Winter_SpecialShouldn't be too hard to find. I've got one and there's a few on eBay right now. The Phoenix tale in it has been reprinted: Marvel Masterworks X-Men iirc and the Iceman one in the Iceman LS TPB. The Nightcrawler hasn't but I assume it'd turn up in any future Nightcrawler LS trade as it's the basis for the the LS

I've read Winter Carnival in the X-Men Rarities book, not sure if I've read the others. I'm sure a copy will show up at work soon enough.
Classic X-Men I found a chunk of back issues when I was younger and that's how I first read most the early Claremont stuff, then I decided to just try and own the entire run of X-Men, which has now become just trying to own all of volume 1 from #1 to 544 and and other issues relevant to the run. So now I have the original issues along with the Classic reprints, I should do a compare and contrast.

I have a good number of James' run in trade: 1-280 are in Marvel US Essentials.
Most of 300+ I have in Panini Essentials or originals.
I've got the Coming of Bishop and X-Cutioner's song trades which take out some of the pre 300 gap. I'm not convinced Coming of Bishop presents the whole issue....
So If I've done my sums right I need

I need #25 to finish my run.
Noticed that the Phoenix story from Bizarre Adventures #27 is in MMW Uncanny X-Men vol 5, which I randomly own, so just the Nightcrawler story to find.

It makes sense for Marvel.
Long term I can see it impacting the X books. I wonder how long until they give X-Men the FF treatment.
Although I think this latest FF film will tank, and Marvel will end up grabbing the rights back for them.
