Just a quick comparison of the two Skybytes.
I might be wrong but new Skybyte seems to get a bit of stick and theres certainly a case for arguing its not really needed as the original is obviously show accurate and remains well articulate and better paint apped than modern toys, but on the other its now well over a decade old.
First up robot mode and theres a lot of similarities. All the basic elements are present on new SB, at the same time you are unlikely to mistake one for the other. Both have similar articulation and very distinctive SB faces.
I have to say I was surprised to see how much taller new Skybyte is. And its not really because its a big pile of hollow plastic. The torso is a solid piece with some decent detailing on the back. the lower arms and legs are hollowish being made from body panels wrapped around elbow/knee and wrist/ankle joints, which may not be to everyones tastes but certainly reduces the amount of kibble. As does using the real shark head as part of the chest
The difference in kibble is most obvious from behind.
I'd honestly forgotten just how much shark original SB carries around, on the other hand Shark Bum is memorable, new SB looks a bit bland.
Winner.
Is there a robot mode winner? Well obviously if you want show accurate you go old SB, fan of the IDW SB, then new SB.
Original SB also has way more paint apps and the chrome looks great, but lets face it, theres a huge amount of kibble that mostly doesnt look that great and if the chrome goes bad it'll go really bad.
New SB is big and fun, the transformation is possibly a little easier, but more importantly to me, far more fun.
Talking about transformation
Shark mode
Firstly new SB is basically impossible to pose in Shark mode without some kind of support, even on top of a glass you can't really stop him looking down. Original SB isn't that much better as the panels the fins attach to split apart if you try and stand him on them, but still you can just about get a passable unsupported display from it.
I think it's fair to say most people are probably going to find original Skybyte a better looking toy in this mode. More Shark like, more dynamic, more shiny. The best case for new Skybyte is that it isn't permanently in attack mode, the lower jaw can be moved and the curved pose is more suited to a shark that likes to talk.
Thats not to say you can't pose new SB with some success.
As well as Nigels very serious look please note the (presumably) Quilters to the left.
Both of these show SB can be balanced standing up, in this case perched on top of a glass.
Shark attack.
Well I had to take advantage of the shark pose.
This ones unsupported, aside from Deaths Heads cape which is quite impressive.
Sharky and George, crime fighters of the sea...
Hunting a dirty rat.
Oh yeah!
