Mighty Avengers 30 & 31 At the point I bailed out of buying monthly stuff regularly Mighty was mid story, albeit one that wasn't doing much for me. Now it's concluded I picked both remaining parts up and actually they aren't too bad. 30 is the better issue for me mainly consisting of Pym chatting with Eternity and discovering that he's the Scientist Supreme (and why Reed & Tony aren't) Good stuff with Hawkeye too. Anyone know where the UK Avengers title is up to US wise ? I think it's on the Venom arc of Mighty Avengers at the moment. Andy |

Essential X-Men #186 in which Messiah Complex reaches its end. Hmmm, this only took up 4 UK issues, but was originally printed across 13 US issues, which is just silly as the story ran out of steam around 8 parts ago. The ending is not helped by much murky art. One of those stories that started well and slid into manure. Luckily it was released weekly in the US comics, anything less would've hurt it more. But yeah, got silly and confusing toward the end, and didn't actually end how I thought it did when I read it. |

I don't mind silly and confusing, it's par for the course with crossovers. But by the end Messiah Complex bored me shitless, which is a far bigger crime!
I haven't read any of the US issues with the California stuff, so I'll give the next issue of Essential a try nonetheless as I like Matt Fraction.

Reading Marvel UKs Collected Editions Essential X Men. Managed to pick up about half of its 180 issues. Currently around the post Bastion stuff from 98. Facinating reading the Xtitles in this fashion as the editors basically pick and choose the order and went to throw in relevant tie comics.
a few issue from now should bring brand new unread stories for me.
After that Collected Editions Spiderman awaits.

I quite enjoyed it. He writes a good Reed. I daresay this will be a monthly pick-up now.
Also randomly read Marvel Heroes #31. Much better than I expected from a kiddy comic. It actually has several words on each page, for one thing (unusual for mags aimed at this age-group) and features the Super-Apes and Klaw the Master of Sound!
As I have at last found a newsagent in Edinburger* that stocks pretty much every UK comic** I shall be trying to support the newsstand a bit more in future.

I picked up the start of the UK reprints of Hickman's FF run as well - fortunately Falkirk is well supplied with places that carry UK comics(*) - I was quite impressed, the characterisation was spot on, (Hickman deftly managed to make a post-Civil War Reed Richards a viable heroic character again as well - something I wasn't sure how they were going to manage) and there was a nice sense of the kind of ludicrous scale idea that should be the FF's stock-in-trade as well. Good stuff, might well pick this up on a ongoing basis.

The editorial welcomes Hickman aboard as the new writer so I presume it runs into FF proper. From reviews, the Dark Reign tie-in is the start of the run to all intents and purposes anyway.
I enjoyed it and have added FF Adventures to my small list of monthly titles.

Picked up Panini's Thor movie special. Very much in the mould of that almost extinct species ie an actual movie-tie in mag in the 80's style. Decent comic strip by Fred Van Lente and Ron Lim, nice poster art, some puzzles, concept art, etc. A lot better than the usual kiddy fare.

It is well worth picking up. I grabbed a copy yesterday morning and was quite impressed by the general production. As Ralph say's very much a blast from the past.
I've been working my way through a pile of comics this weekend as well:-
Fantastic Four Adventures ish 17: I'm coming to love the Pannini reprint titles. Sure, they may be a while behind the US titles but that doesn't really bother me. What I do like is getting so much content for my money, it is a nice nostalgic throwbacks to the UK comics of my childhood. This issue gives us parts 2 and 3 of Solve Everything - a cracking story showing just how firm a lock Hickman has on all of the main cast but especially Reed and Sue - along with the usual colour reprint of a classic Stan Lee and Jack Kirby issue. Solve Everything is fantastic cosmic scale bonkersness but also has some really good small scale character work - the hallmark of good FF writing. (I do like the very clever tie between one of the flashback scenes here and one of the issues of Hickman's S.H.I.E.L.D series as well. It is subtle and the scene still works if you aren't reading the other series, which is how good continuity stuff should be done) With content like that at a cover price barely more than a single US issue I really can't argue with it at all.
Essential X-Men ish 17: Ralph advised me that this title had now stopped reprinting issues of Legacy, which was what had driven me away from it, and was printing the Dark X-Men stuff. Turns out this issue is the end of the Dark X-Men material. Even allowing for the fact that this is the end of a story arc I don't think I'd have been very happy paying US cover price for this stuff. On the other hand at the UK retail I'm inclined to cut it a bit more slack and enjoy the bits that are quite fun (Norman Osborn having one of his really not so bright days for one). Might keep picking this up for a bit as it moves into reprinting siege stuff, see how it sits with me for a while.
S.H.I.E.L.D Infinity: Honestly, I had thought that the S.H.I.E.L.D series' little break was going to turn into a cancellation by stealth but here we have a special and further issues due in the summer. The special is on the one hand really just a holding pattern, it doesn't seem to do anything significant to advance the overall plot, just filling in some stuff around the edges. On the other hand, one of the joys of the series has been watching the Brotherhood of the Shield save the world in bonkers ways throughout unrecorded Marvel Universe history, and on that front it doesn't dissappoint - after all, where else can you see Archimedes pilot the Colossus of Rhodes into a fistfight in ancient greece against a giant alien robot? It reads a bit like offcuts that have been swept together with a few making-of pages to make up the numbers, but some of them are very good offcuts so I will forgive it quite a bit.

I picked up the latest FF Adventures yesterday and thought "wuh?" this isn't where I remember the story finishing. So today I fished the last issue out and it took me ages to work out how it fitted in.
