30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #259 Primal Scream - Part 1: Grimlock, Jazz, Bumblebee and the Rescue Patrol are confronted by the Keeper, who tells them to bow down in the presence of their god, Primus. Grimlock refuses to believe what's going on and demands proof: to know how he was created. Meanwhile, Xaaron oversees repairs to the trans-time portal and elsewhere in the heart of Cybertron, Bludgeon and the Mayhem Squad search for the Autobots. The Keeper grants Grimlock his wish and begins to tell the tale of how Primus and Unicron fought on the astral plane at the end of the time of the gods. Primus was injured by Unicron and left the astral plane, descending into a lifeless asteroid and tricking Unicron into doing the same. Within his asteroid, Primus learned to psionically reform it into metal... Perchance to Dream: Silverbolt The mysterious figure has lost control of the mind bug. In his dreams, Silverbolt commands the Aerialbots in an attack against Menasor, but inside worries about his fear of heights. Skydive claims their only hope is to combine into Superion, but Silverbolt knows that by sharing minds, the other Aerialbots will discover his secret. Throwing caution to the wind, he tells the others to form on him and his shame becomes anger. Superion lashes out at Menasor and defeats him. At this point, the images being watched by the mysterious figure disappear and it decides it will intervene personally to find out why. In the Ark, the Autobots have been awakened by the bug probing them and Silverbolt tells the others to be ready for anything. Elsewhere, There's a free sticker on the cover and Transformation warns readers to look for another gift next week; Colin decides to share protecting the country with a repentant Kate; on the letters' page, Rudi Sheridan of County Cork asks what the gosh heck has happened to Ultra Magnus and gets no real answer; and on the back page, Findus announce The Return of Optimus Prime on VHS - available with special packs of Crispy Pancakes for £4.99 plus 90p postage and packing.

So.... If they were all physically not injured, 'cos the probe didn't physically repair them, why... why were they asleep...? What did the probe do to wake them that Ratchet and co couldn't do?

Same thing as for the Dinobots after the Dinobot Hunt? There is only so far medicine will take one.. Hmmmm, I dunno. Smells like bad story telling to me. But I suppose... well, if they were in some kind of coma due to the, I dunno, shock of being so badly injured...? Still smells like guff...

It was actually the re-release of their toys that woke them from their slumber.

Stuck in a loop, permanently crashed or running in 'safe mode' even if Ratchet had fixed the physical parts of their bodies.

Maybe the Underbase overload gave them a computer virus / corrupted their programming as well as blowing them to bits.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #260 Primal Scream - Part 2: The Keeper continues his story, telling how Primus created the Transformers to defend the planet he was becoming. Suddenly, the Keeper is shot as the Mayhem squad arrive. He dies, warning Bumblebee that Primus must never be awakened. On Earth, Scorponok's Decepticons express their displeasure at their leader allowing Starscream back into their ranks. Starscream listens outside, pleased his scheming is going to plan. Back on Cybertron, Bumblebee ponders what he has learned, but decides to fight the Decepticons. Perchance to Dream: Galvatron Galvatron arrives on the Ark to find himself facing the awoken Autobots. He attempts to take over them with mind control chips, and manages to attach two to Prowl and Wheeljack. Galvatron commands them to attack the others, but instead they turn on him, catching him off guard. Prowl explains Autobots are dedicated to ignoring the base instincts Galvatron sought to capitalise on and Wheeljack places a handy mind control device of his own on Galvatron's head. Encased in a cyro-capsule, Galvatron lives out his own nightmares of being beaten by Rodimus Prime. Elsewhere, it's free gift time again in the form of a large A2 poster of the Classic Heroes; there's a spot the difference competition to win toys of the same; and Dreadwind appears in black and white on the letters' page for the first time, where Denny Sutton of Basle asks why Hasbro have never thought of releasing Cybertronian Transformer toys.

Pity Wheeljack didn't think of making one of these gadgets to subdue Galvatron during Target: 2006 or Time Wars.

He survives a volcanic eruption, yet one blast from Prowl and Wheeljack takes him down, just like that?! Now, don't get me wrong, I'm pleased Prowl assumed his natural leadership role, and did what Ultra Magnus and Rodimus Prime (pfft) could not do and actually defeat the indestructible Galvatron, but... come on....
So, which Galvatron is this? Weren't multiples retro'd in to explain stuff?

So, which Galvatron is this? It's left vague. You could regard this Galvatron as appearing only in this story. But I like to think this is the Galvatron from the 'Rhythms of Darkness' future (which also featured Prowl in a leadership role!) who got brought back to the mainstream TF universe by Hook, Line and Sinker, and his 'Perchance to Dream' adventure is a little rebellious detour on his part (unauthorised by Unicron) which somewhat delays his attack on Emirate Xaaron's base on Cybertron. This last part is sooo rushed after a five week build up. Why Galvatron anyway? Does that have any relevance to anything? There are several Decepticon 'leaders' in play at this point, any of them would make a better story here.

I always preferred him to be an entirely seperate Galvatron. I like the idea of him being in the Ark, and getting pumped full of Nucleon. There's a good story to be had in there, also with all the time travel and the divergent futures, there's fun to be had there as well.

At this point Furman is intending the present-day UK strips to tie in with the upcoming US ones, and for things to become clear when they do (including the presence of Galvatron, who he plans to re-introduce in the US comic). But over the course of the next few months he gradually gives up on ever tying them up coherently. As you will soon see. Martin

Maybe Wheeljack made his gadget using the thing Ravage wanted him to put on Jetfire's head in his flashback.
Galvatron caused Wheeljack to re-live those events, thus reminding him he still had Ravage's gizmo tucked away in a drawer, so he dug it out and used the tech on Galvy!

Oh right, okay. That makes sense then. So in effect this Galvatron making a point of saying he isn't *that* Galvatron is just to patch that problem for UK readers, whereas in the US comic it wouldn't need to be addressed. That's even more annoying.

I don't think it's gradual, it just feels that way with how out of sync the US and UK scheduling was for the work actually being produced. When the Dinobots appear in the UK, he's obviously planning on bringing them back with the ramp up to Unicron and will find someway to end the Earthforce tale in a suitably death filled manner. The the UK strip gets axed, so no way to get to that story point.

One thing that bugged me is that Sunstreaker has apparently never heard of Galvatron.
I know he was off-line during 'Target: 2006', but he was up and around again in 'Totalled', and I find it hard to believe no-one ever mentioned Galvatron to him while he was active in 1988.

I suspect the regime that Grimlock installed, while efficient, kinda left little time for downtime or chitchat. It's entirely possible that Sunstreaker was back on feet and the first thing that happened was to be shoved out the door to watch the fight on the moon.
Given how things were back then, I can imagine he waking up, asking what he'd missed, being told "Lots; but firstly, Optimus is DEAD dead and Grimlock's in charge now" and just being too shellshocked for anything else.

Gah! I've just discovered I inadvertently sat this issue on top of the cardboard envelope that bloody creased 2000AD poster came in and the back cover stuck to the glue on it. Wrecked it! totally torn back cover! I'm down an issue of the 332! to eBay! to eBay!
