30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #289 Deadly Obsession - Part 4: Thunderwing mind-links with the klud and learns it swallowed an escape pod that was infused with matrix energy. The pod came from a local moon called VsQs. Pincher manages to stop Longtooth killing the klud at the last minute and Thunderwing calls off his attack, now intent on going to VsQs instead. End of the Road! The Autobots pursue the Stunticons, trying to rescue Irwin Spoon from Motormaster's cab. Prowl is buffeted off the road and Breakdown runs into Jazz. Spoon himself ponders his life choices while Bombshell sits behind him silently in insect mode. The Autobots eventually force Motormaster off the road, and Bumblebee rips off his cab top to rescue Irwin. Bombshell reports back to Starscream - mission accomplished. Later, Spoon begins to write his story... under Bombshell's control. Elsewhere, Transformation claims this week's competition could net you a VHS copy of Desertion of the Dinobots in 'glorious 3D'; Wheelie and Wheeljack feature in the penultimate installment of the A-Z's current format; Colin reveals the secret origin of his combat trousers; Tesco advertise their new Teenage Mutant Hero Turtle pizzas (available in tomato and cheese or tomato and sausage varieties); and on the letters' page, Sazril Murshid of Malaysia confuses Dreadwind with a question about why Metalhawk and the other Pretenders have both human sized and Transformer sized Pretender shells depending on whether they're in cartoon or comic form.

So that's it then? The end of UK originated content in the comic?
Sad.

I guess Bombshell wasn't interested in making any more.

There is much nonsense in this issue. For a start the sausage and tomato pizza clearly has just as much cheese on it as the cheese and tomato pizza. Then, the editorial seems to be under the impression that the video itself is 3D, and not just the cover/book with it, which would have disappointed a fair few misled buyers. And... revealing the origin of Colin's trousers?! That's Chibnall level unnecessary origin story telling.

So that's it then? The end of UK originated content in the comic? Sad. It's the end of the UK strips, but original UK covers will still feature up until #330. I had those Hero Turtle pizzas! They were great. The video "in glorious 3d" was a lie! It was just the video cover that was in 3D, IIRC. -Ralph

Exactly. The advert for the video makes that clear, but the editorial makes it sound like the video is. To this we say, shoddy. SHOD.
I wonder if hero turtle pizzas are less violent on the stomach than ninja turtle ones. It feels like such a British thing, that. Is it a pepperoni pizza? NO. NO IT ISN'T. IT'S FUCKING SAUSAGE PIZZA AND YOU'LL LIKE IT. FUCK OFF WITH YOUR PEPPERONI, WE EAT GOOD AND PROPER FUCKING SAUSAGES HERE.
...
it's been a long day.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #290 Legacy of Unicron - Part 1.1: Reprinted from #146 Dark Creation - Part 1: Some time ago on VsQs, the Creation Matrix lies in the chest of the deceased Optimus Prime. A dying robot touches it and is restored to life as the Deathbringer. Some time after that a predatory biological lifeform crawls into Prime's chest and is remade bigger and deadlier by the Matrix. The creature attacks a scientific expedition - the remnants of the one that made it to Pequod. Back in the present, The Pretender Classics investigate the Scientists' base on VsQs in the hope of finding a connection to the Matrix. Grimlock returns from scouting the area and candidly explains he has found the scientists - dead. Elsewhere, Transformation promises that the lack of continuity between the British and American storylines will be resolved soon but doesn't make a big thing about the comic returning to full colour; Wildrider and Windcharger feature in the final entry of the A-Z's initial run; Colin takes on Robocol 2; and on the letters' page, Richard Potter or Cheltenham claims Dreadwind has been the most helpful letter answerer so far, but wonders if his time on the page should be coming to an end.

It did seem an improvement on quality this issue, with it being full colour.
Even if it wasn't. The extra money spent on colour ink was saved by the reprints no doubt.

Massive shift in tone in the story. We've gone from Budiansky style hijinks with mind-controlling farmers to a comically insane Longtooth, then as soon as Geoff Senior turns up on art we're into sinister facehugger style deaths on a remote moon. Furman's writing in Kings of the Wild Frontier is completely different to Dark Creation.
It also occurs to me that at this point the annual had been out a couple of months, but not only has the comic totally ignored that - there hasn't been an advert either. Makes you pine for the days when the annual was a major event tied into the stories.

Furman's writing in Kings of the Wild Frontier is completely different to Dark Creation. I don't know, they're all dark stories with horror elements to them, and they're all homages to classic movies, though admittedly 'Alien' is more horrific than 'The Maltese Falcon', 'Moby Dick' or classic westerns. You mentioned how the annual was being ignored by the comic, but Furman's 1990 obsession with doing unsubtle homages to movies that he likes carried through to that too, with 'The Magnificent Six'. Geoff Senior did 'Primal Scream' and 'Matrix Quest' Part 1, then had two months off to catch up and did Parts 4 and 5. I wonder how different Parts 2 and 3 would have felt if he'd done them too? The art is certainly part of it. I'm trying to picture Wild Frontier drawn by Senior. He has form for quirky aliens, but the tone of the writing is different too.

Yeah. Probably mostly 'cos he's doing an 18-rated movie now, I guess.

I wonder what pressures Furman was under at this point. If he was directed to include specific characters or concepts, or whether by this point it was assumed the comic was on its last legs and Hasbro didn't care. The linked individual stories with different groups of characters harks back to stories like Dinobot Hunt, but by and large his epics tend to carry the same characters all the way through. I suppose Matrix Quest is really a way for him to get all his ducks in a row; each group of characters has been a featured group in UK strips so he seems to be just drawing it all together.

They only exist when the other six members combine... and then it could be argued the individual members don't exist.

I now imagine those crafty combiners having a massive Special Teams house party and then simply merging when Prowl and the cops turn up. "Only six in this household Guv'!"

Don't think he was under any pressure in terms of including characters from Hasbro at that point. I know there had been a plan by him to try and draw everything together, but that seemed to fall apart - the rather abrupt ending of the UK originated strips supports that, as there's no way if he knew things were coming to an end it would be on that note.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #291 Legacy of Unicron 1.2 Reprinted from #146 Dark Creation - Part 2: Grimlock laments not having the other Dinobots with him, thinking brute force would be useful in this situation. Bumblebee is about to be attacked by a sinister creature hiding in the roof when Thunderwing crashes through the window, demanding the Autobots hand over the Matrix. Grimlock punches Thunderwing but is surprised to find this has no effect. Spinister, Needlenose and Windsweeper arrive and a fight breaks out. Elsewhere, Transformation tries to entice long term readers to stay with the comic by promising the return of old art favourites in future issues; The A-Z is replaced by an advert for handheld LCD game Run-away from Grandstand; Steve gets blown up by Robocol 2; and it's loony week on the letters page as David Martin of Bidford-On-Avon asks what to do if you don't like the free toy you get for having a letter published and Vikash Shah of Kenton, Middlesex claims the voices in his head have told him Kylie Minogre and Jason Donatron are actually Decepticon Pretenders.
