I've always seen tech-specs endurance as meaning how resistant your body is to enemy fire. Maybe original Megatron's endurance of 8 is an indication that he's vulnerable to damage in gun mode? In the comics he could shrug off most firepower when in robot mode, though he proved susceptible to poisoned fuel, falling off cliffs, and getting mauled by the Predacons' sharp bits. Bumblebee has strength 2 but endurance 7. His relatively high endurance suggests to me that although easily damaged, he is very hard to kill. I mean, look what G.I. Joe and/or Death's Head did to him, which destroyed his body but failed to kill him. Trailbreaker's endurance 10 is obviously a reference to his ability to deflect enemy fire when his force-field is up. Which unfortunately it wasn't in 'Man of Iron' and 'Target: 2006'. Martin

Beetles were very hearty vehicles. They were tough as tough gets. 'Bee having an endurance of 8 makes a lot of sense.
Strength means he's not very strong. He's not gonna wrestle Megatron to the ground, pick up a 100 ton block, or rip ravage's spinal column out by his tail.

endurance noun 1. the ability to endure an unpleasant or difficult process or situation without giving way. (Ironhide) 2 the capacity of something to last or to withstand wear and tear. (Galvatron)
So all Transformers with gold plastic should be a 1.

Krok notably had endurance 10, and I liked how Roberts played with that in MTMTE (I assume it was intentional) with him surviving some pretty hard circumstances like his encounter with Vos.

I've been looking forward to this one.
As a child, Techspecs offered such depth... Depth to the characters, but also depth to their universe... And NOTHING enriched that depth more than Rank. It showed... intricacy... organisation... real thought had gone into this world.
Darling Martin has some excellent theories on the individual ranks, etc.
I remember, quite clearly, the Dark Days before I got my Prowl. My brother and I would speculate at the ranks of our favourites. Jazz was a predictable 8, but only 8? Skids had already blown our minds with 8. I assumed Prowl would have a 7, 8 at the most. But then... THEN... I got one. And was marveled. Starscream's 5 caused much confusion... and doubt in The System.
(...the realisation recently of the rank/size disparity throws more doubt into the system...)
The organisation that Techspec Ranks windowed to us fascinates me still. Techspecs at their best.

I think on Shockprowl's box it was 11.

I think on Shockprowl's box it was 11. Targetmaster Cyclonus has taught us that tech-spec values of 11 are possible... Martin

My interpretation of the ranks, inspired by earlier discussions with Martin.
10. Leader
9. General
8. Commander
7. Lieutenant
6. Specialist
5. Warrior
I do wonder if the 'Warrior' rank should be split, so something like 5. Warrior Sergeant, and 4. Warrior. Then maybe 3. Worker, 2. Underling, 1. THE DOCKOTOR.

Nah, that’s just over complicating things. All frontline soldiers, be they gunners or warriors, should be ranked equal.

You could do that. Autobots and Decepticons each chart showing how many of each rank there are.

10. Leader 9. General 8. Commander 7. Lieutenant 6. Specialist 5. Warrior Ah, but Optimus Prime's function is 'Commander' and he has rank 10. And Sky Lynx's function is 'Lieutenant Commander' and he has rank 9. Martin

I think that's a good order but it would give you as many lieutenants as it would warriors. Does it stand up that the specialists all come up as 6? Wheeljack is an 8.

Jetfire's a 10 and he's a 'guardian'.

I like this thinking. It connects to thoughts I was having about the Jetfire thread. The character Jetfire as presented through his bio and tech spec numbers is very different to the one in either the comic or cartoon. His bio only briefly mentions his scientific focus and is more about the fact he's a giant warrior built by the autobots to single handedly win the war in the air, which is why he's so big and is ranked equal to Optimus. He's actually what Ultra Magnus became in Target 2006, but was never really written like that. Maybe because if he was allowed to truly be the all powerful air guardian the war would have been over pretty quickly.

I think it's a case of 'best fit', 'cos ranks became a thing where there were lots of different ideas and influences, without any coherent plan. Like communism. Also 'Rank' and 'Function' might be different things...? Maybe...?

And maybe the 6, 'Specialist', is where an individual starts, those with a speciality, but they can be promoted upwards. So Wheeljack's been promoted up due to his effectiveness to a 'Chief Engineer' type role.
I'm all for rank mobility.
