Hi Cyber-Darlings. I don't own any of the original Transformers Sunbow cartoon on DVD! I am ashamed. Eldest wants to see them, so, which is the best version to get, hmm? Shame on you. Though Prowl is hardly in them so you would be even sadder watching them.
I only have the original 4 Metrodome sets, in the big grey boxes, so I am not sure if there are any others in the PAL format that are not the same sets just in new packaging.

This came up on Radio Free Cybertron last week oddly enough. If you're able to play region 1 DVDs apparently the best release is the current Shout Factory boxset www.amazon.com/Transformers-Complete-Peter-Cullen/dp/B004NJC0JIMy own ones are the old American Rhino releases, which are nice enough, but I think I read somewhere that they had some effects added not true to the original broadcasts. However to me they had a better picture quality than the UK releases. They were on more discs and therefore less compressed. I did a like for like comparison at the time and really noticed the US ones were better. But that was ten years ago. What the current UK releases are like I don't know. |

I saw in HMV a complete boxset for £20. Included a bunch of extras including videos of Botcon 2003 and AA04. Oddly all the screen caps on the back were from the Takara shows.
Left me a bit confused, I assume its G1, in which cases it seems a good price.

I have a season one box set. The one from Amazon. Kiddies love it! There's episodes I haven't even seen! And others that bring back great memories. Been years since I've seen these. Great fun. Wish they'd stop miss-colouring the Strike Planes though. Even Piglet's getting annoyed by it!

Season Two is quite poor. Watch the ones from the Turn and Burn approved Least Worst of Sunbow.
Then move on to Season 3.

Season 3 is when they start putting in interesting characters with fallibilities and interesting plots and develop ideas. So of course it is the season G1 fans hate the most. |

Andy Rebirth is pretty eh for me, as it is mostly an exercise in introducing as many characters as possible within a span of three episodes. But I can see why people would like it. Really though, I'm racist against the green-skinned Nebulons. Who thought that was a good idea?!?!?! |

I love the Rebirth. Green Nebulans rock.
I enjoy season 1 and parts of season 2 but find season 3 generally a chore. Other than a couple of episodes like Dark Awakening.
Also Andu is a scary fellow.

Season 3 is the only season I can tolorate watching. Even if they did take the already disgraceful Dinobots and turned them into something more rage inducing than the love child of jarjar binks and dobby the house elf.
And even if it's animation makes Hanna Barbera look like a quality animation house.
I can usually sit through ONE episode of season one at a time, and have to wait a few days before another.
I can't make it through a season 2 episode in one sitting. But I can make it through a few season 3 episodes at a time before I have to shut it off and watch something better.
The Rhino releases were pretty bad dvds. But Shout Factory is far from perfect as they could barely be bothered to put them in order.
I never seen any of the g1 animu stuff, but they sound pretty badly written, and animu and transformers don't mix very well, to begin with.
Loath I am of the horrid green bug nebulans, at least even they are better than the boring transtector concept the japanese had going.

I love Season 1, and bits of Season 2.
Season 2 is pretty much where the worst episodes lurk, and S3 has a few overlooked gems. The Dweller in the Depths for example.
