You... you're probably right. The rope of logic you dangle has plucked me from the madness of doubt.

Personal opinion question time.
Do you consider this Devastator to be an actual Combiner Wars combiner, or a separate toy released under the CW header (such as the leaders, and half the legends)?
This has been a debate between a friend and I, and it aggrivates him that I'm limiting the count to the voyager/deluxe combiners. I tend to feel that they share the CW gimmick, while dev doesn't, and thus I count him as an individual special release.

We need to see the connect points - looks like Scavenger connects to Hook by a black peg that folds out from Hooks cab.

It says 'Combiner Wars' on the box therefore it is a 'Combiner Wars' toy and part of the 'Combiner Wars' range.

If we define a "Combiner Wars combiner" as one that has limbs that can be an arm/leg and uses the connector system found on Alpha Bravo & Silverbolt, then no Devastator isn't a Combiner Wars combiner. Which is a shame, I'd have like to do some Construction vehicle limb swapping.
However he is a combiner in the Combiner Wars toyline!
This one will hurt people's heads down the line!

Possibly it might be easier to ask what label do we put on the toys that do usen the Silverbolt/Alpha Bravo system....

Special Teams are the 86-88 combiners, referred to as Scramble City in Japan.
Does Combiner Wars Special Teams has a ring to it?

Or Dev could be a merge group & the other special teams - because we never got "Stunticons merge for the kill"

Devastator is a Gestalt. One of them has to be. And the rest... Special Teams!

It amazes me now to think all four special teams hit at the same time. Imagine the insanity if that happened now. Shows you how different the market was back then. And that was only *half* the big stuff for that year, the movie brought a whole new slew of toys six months later.

Variety was great but it did mean I rarely got more than 1 toy from any range, not that I would have gotten more with a different system, it just would have been easier to choose one from the 4 limbs on sale now than the 16 then.
I preferred it though, I never would have completed a team like the Protectorbots if I was a kid now.
Hotspot and Groove were my second and third transformers I think (sludge was already mine). Got them for a birthday and it was only because a one legged combiner is a bit non functional that Streetwise appeared with Dad when he got home from work. Had to wait till Christmas for Blades and First Aid.
Now a days Defensor would have remained armless while 2 combaticons stood laughing at him.

I'm feeling more positive towards Devastator. I am still concerned over the arms, and I think his head looks very basic, but, overall, I think he'll be a fun toy. I, personally, am thrilled he is as big as he is. He can't be big enough as far as I'm concerned! I know many of my cyber-pals would have preferred him the same size as the other combiners, but I love that he's much larger. IMO Devastator was the first, and should be the largest. I'm not sure how the arm situation can be improved upon, but I suspect several 3P companies are already feverishly planning improved heads. I'd maybe like to see some kind of a shoe for Scrapper to wear in combined mode. No, I'm being serious. Poor Scrapper looks very uncomfortable. (I still can't decided what I'm going to do with Green Giant. I can't have two Devastator's. It's daft!)

Sorry to go all Shockprowl on you but does anyone else think Devastator is too big? I mean look bellow And the Constructicons.... They've never been more than footsoldiers before and now they're all Voyager sized?

What evidence is there of the size of him compared to the special teams in the old media? I can't remember without going back to look. Has he always been bigger?
I have come round to the idea that he's larger than the others and that being construction vehicles they're okay being voyagers. I also do really like the idea that being the first combiner the individual robots are big, simple and stupid. Like the special teams are smaller but more refined, version two as it were.
No, I'm fine with it. I don't think the combiners all have to be the same size.

I can find an image, which I think is Dreamwave, of him fighting an equal sized Superion.
I can find another, on the Wiki from the Headmasters cartoon, which shows him slightly larger than Defensor.
In Zone he's the same size as the other generals, including the 4 Scramble City 'con combiners.

He needs to be bigger! At least 12 feet tall!!! -Ralph YEEESSSS!!!!!!! Seriously. I... I dunno, it's just personal preferance. Personally I've always imagined Devastator, the First Combiner, as being larger than the others. Not entirely as successful (Superion, for example, being faster and more fluid), but larger and stronger. And Philip, dear sir, the Constructicons are not mere 'Footsoldiers'! Are you mad, sir?! They're the engineers and scientists of Megatron's army! It is only fitting that they (Scrapper, Hook and maybe Mixmaster and Scavenger) come up with the very concept of a Combination Robot! Also, scale-wise, construction vehicles are large (not as large as jets...). Anywho. As a concept, Devastator, in my mind's eye should be HHHHUUUUUUGGGGGGEEEEEEE!!!!!!! And I'll spank my arse as sure as mustn't if it isn't so.

Oh and now being a connoisseur of the cartoon, and having studied the pictures available, I think the designers have done a pretty good job of duplicating the cartoon version of Devastator. Doesn't mean I don't think there's room for improvement, but still... nice job.

The argument/logic that he should be larger because he's made of construction vehicles for me falls apart when the aerialbots come into play. Save for Longhaul (who could fit every constructicon in his bed), the smallest aerialbot dwarfs each constructicon. Then that makes Bruticus and Defensor rediculous when in brute's case there's a massive orbiter for an arm, and a jeep as a leg, with a gun truck core. Defensor, same thing only with a fire truck core and a motorcycle leg. (One could reasonably argue blades can be equal to streetwise and first aid)
Personally, I feel they should all be relatively equal, or the whole thing falls apart when you start saying "this one should be bigger because vehicles, but these shouldn't because tradition"
Also, making them voyager instead of deluxes pretty much killed andthing unique they could have done here. I was really excited for the potential of them having universal connection ports.

The argument/logic that he should be larger because he's made of construction vehicles for me falls apart when the aerialbots come into play. Ah, yes. That is the gaping hole in my argument big enough to drive a Constructicon through I was hoping no one would notice. However... Oh dear, there goes option two. What am I left with? what am I left with? Oh yes! randomly applied mass-shifting! aha! get out of that one. You can't, can you. I've got you there.

I'd have done all six as deluxe. Same combination connector as the standard CW toys, but just the limb mode they usually have. Stuck em in a box together cos they don't quite fit the standard deluxe play pattern.
