Optimus named the drone after the autobot.
IDW Roller is a new character, probably loosely inspired by the toy that came with G1 Optimus' toy.
But other than that is separate.
Unite Roller is fictionally the drone who's pissed off he got left behind, but they decoed it like the IDW character as a bit of fanwank.

Pre-ordered an Expensive Groove & pals from TFS-Express. BBTS reckons the release date is "early December" so it should hopefully turn up before Christmas. I'll need to let my folks know to expect a package... I also ordered a pair of replacement hands for MP Star Saber that have crazy poseability and a palm-thingie that means he can finally hold his sword the right way round! -Nick Omegalock's update today says they'll have Defensor in stock next week, so you should be good for Christmas! |

If it's not available then it's getting bumped (for now) for the Lego Ewok Village that I've just found exists and looks amazing. Where are your priorities?!? Apart from in the correct place. That is, indeed, an amazing set. More so in that it's also a pretty faithful recreation of the original Kenner playset... |

One thing this set seems to tell us (and I was beginning to suspect this with the combaticons), is that the connector pieces in the chest are not made from unpaintable plastic.
If this be true, then it just makes a lot of hasbro's decisions in CW seem even cheaper and lazier.

Are you sure they're painted and not just made from different colours of plastic?
I can see that sliding them in and out of combiner sockets would make them in advisable to paint.

The main joint has no issues in combination when it comes to scraping paint off.
One side of the actual connector piece never contacts with the walls of the socket, which means no paint damage either.
And even if they're made from different color pieces and not paint, that shows they're on two different sprues.
And there are a fair few CWs that would be drastically improved by having the Chest piece be a separate color from the Belly piece (such as Vortex).

But depending how it's been rotated both sides CAN come into contact with the connector. I wouldn't want to have paint on something that's scraping up and down like like. And even if they're made from different color pieces and not paint, that shows they're on two different sprues. It could be the Unite version is having two runs of that part in different colours with the waste plastic going in the recycle bin? Or has modified the moulds to separate them? Breakdown's connector really doesn't look like either half is painted. |

I've got Off Road out for comparison: The chest connector parts seem to be the same colour as the waist, shoulder joints and elbow joints. Looking at Breakdown that seems to be the case for the lower part of it here. The upper part is the moved/painted piece then. It's moulding appears to match the original in that the shapes on it look the same. The colour looks like it could possibly match the new head so I reckon the upper chest has been duplicated on the sprue with the new head. |
