The Universe one was pretty funky, but it did nothing to quest my urge for a re-issue of the original.

Yup. Not supposed to come apart, but I had one separate over time if the halves of the launcher get parted.

I had the 1990 Classics Jazz and it was one piece on that. It's two pieces on the Encore version though.

Oooh, that's useful G.
I sat down to do Jazz and realised that every version is different in some way or another. I was pretty sure the launcher used to be a solid unit but was struggling to find someone to say it definitively.
The new launcher is a bit of a mucked up design though. Put the peg on the launcher rather than the backpack and he'd be able to hold the launcher and have the gun as a shoulder cannon.

I'm not sure if my brother's original Jazz's backpack was supposed to come apart, but it did very quickly in our house after he got it, I seem to remember. And he took far better care of this toys than I did. I don't recall it 'breaking' apart or anything like that, I seem to remember is easily split into two pieces. Then again is was a very long time ago.

Lord above the Jazz backpack thing is a nightmare. But I think I've got the hang of it.
1 piece missile launching backpack: Diaclone, Original TF, Cookie Crisp, Euro Classic, TFC Jazz version 1 and TFC Stepper.
2 piece missile launching backpack - long pointed rear: Commemorative Series Jazz & CS Ricochet
2 piece missile launching backpack - short rear: TFC Jazz v2 and Encore Jazz
No missile Launching Backpack: Headmasters Stepper & G2 Jazz.
Targetmaster backpack: HM Stepper, TFC Stepper & CS Ricochet
Don't get me going on the hand gun and missiles !

Was farting around with my new Encores of Ratchet and Ironhide and actually like the odd robot mold. Reminds me of Ban Dai Robo Machine toys...but, does anyone else like the 'headless' look or did they get that add on of the heads and arms to make it cartoon style....?

I made do with it back in the day. Whilst not 'horrible', they just were not the Ratchet and Ironhide that looked cool on TV and in the comics.
At this rate, more accurate versions of these two will end up being made by third party before Hasbro gets in there.
With the old G1 toys I considered the platform part of the robot mode a bird-like minion that could curl the moving gun part around the robots shoulder and perch there. They combined Skids and Mudflap style back into vehicle mode.
I feel compelled to open my Encore Ratchet now.

I've got the heads, but the heads muck up the proportions for the robots. I'd be happier if I had some Diaclone Men to go in them. The E-Hobby black Ironhide is the only limited edition Japanese recolour I've ever bought.

I always liked the non-humanoid robots of Ratchet and Ironhide. I used to pretend that the windscreens became computer monitors in robot mode and they "projected" the faces/emotions of the characters.

You watched the Space Sentinals or read Captain America comics featuring Arnim Zola when you were little.

I think the card heads they supply with the encores of these are well shite..not even worth removing. Even though I've applied all the stickers I still feel the windshield is basically their faces, the bumper chromes their mouths.....
Another odd thing is that you can stick the long gun into the chromed/rounded belt area of the robot when in van modes but the vehicle doesn't quite sit properly on any surface with the wheels jacked up, is this supposed to be how that weapons stored as the instructions don't mention it.

I love the original Ratchet/Ironhide robot modes - more-so when they are attached to the mobile repair bays. I always envisaged that this is sort of what all TFs would look like before coming to Earth - more machine like.

I remember being split re these two. I loved the characters, and always wanted cartoon/comic accurate toys of them (STILL FREAKIN' WAITING N'ALL!), yet the G1 toys themselves are actually really cool. I had the windscreens as, well, screens, infront of their 'heads/faces' which were the seats. This suited the characters perfectly as Ratchet's would display medical info, and Ironhide's security readouts.
I believe my brother, who had Ratchet, gave his sled thingy the name of 'Parts'. I only got Ironhide in the 'Classic Heroes' re-release, so didn't give his sled a name.
If the 'Sleds' were semi-autonomous, what would be good names for them?

I like the name 'Parts' thats cool. You should have called yours 'Parts II' i.e. your bros one was blown up or something and the new one...etc....

Haven't checked the US/UK instructions but the Encore one didn't show how to store it....

When I used to play with my toys back in the day, I used to call Ratchets bay 'Probe' and he was Ratchets best friend. Happy (simpler) days!
Always been disappointed the bays weren't Incorporated into the Universe toys, especially as Hasbro did such a good job with the Energon Towline figure.

I'm still tempted by the Botcon repaints of Towline as Ironhide and Ratchet as they're basically better jobs than Universe Ironhide and Ratchet. I've got the Henkei versions and they're still not that much better. There's an Ironhide on eBay. £98 plus postage.

Yeah, got this site on me Mac's bookmarks bar, v.nice. I logically wondered and mucked around and came up with the belt and lazer connection but the vehicle mode thence seems jacked up when its stored underside...does this happen with all of them when tis done or is it to do with the reissue molds?

The original toys are very nifty and clever for their time. I like them as an adult, but thought they were poo as a kid (much like my opinion on the Megatron toy).

I've always been quite fond of Ironhide and Ratchet, even when I was a youngster. I never actually managed to own one as a kid but they were amongst the toys I really quite liked the look of.
There is something about their non-humanoid proportions and the lack of binocular vision and whatnot that makes them quite interesting I think.

I love the original Ironhide and Ratchet mold. It makes me think of that cool mysterious time before they would become part of what became known as Transformers.

can someone help me? I can't think of a reason why G1 Jazz's toy should be classed as cool for my review. It's not enough to say that he has a "realistic" alt mode since that was the gimmick for the whole early G1 line
I'm okay with the other sections of the review, except for the why is he cool section...the only thing I can think of is that the G1 Jazz toys tend to only be used for Jazz/Meister and Ricochet/Stepper repaints/new toys
