I'd say Wheelie doesn't stand out as odd any more than Cosmos in 1985. Both are strange fictional vehicles among earth ones.
And of course Scourge is a strike plane. Cyclonus, on the other hand should obviously have been sold with the Insecticon assortment.

The 'Movie' certainly has a lot to answer for.

HE'S GOT HANDS! Oh my word. He doesn't have Brawn's claws. Mind blown. This is why he's not as good as Brawn.

I remember being really disappointed back in the day when I got Outback and his vehicle mode looked nothing like it did in the comic.

Think I'd had Outback for a little while by then, so I was just glad he was IN the comic. And then being disappointed he got near murdered.

Hmmm. Look at that gun, so cannon like. Look at those hands. Look at that silver face and those skinny legs.
Outback was meant to be Megatron*

And Wheelie? They gave the Wheelie team the model sheets from the character they wanted to animate, and they created a faithful vehicle mode, and a robot mode that's just perfect if you look at it with your eyes shut. They gave him a cap peak of sorts, but no head and a face in the middle of his chest. Was that really the best they could do?? Martin Im always careful of juding movie toys based on their final film appearance. The designers were usually working from significantly earlier and different designs. He is, though, a proper mini Autobot, you naughty person. He's a Mini Autobot, but not a proper Mini Autobot. He's a Mini Autobot in the same sense that Cyclonus and Scourge are Strike Planes. Sold in the same size packaging, lumped together with them on some but not all toy catalogues (see www.tfw2005.com/boards/threads/japanese-toy-catalog-help-required.1165991/ ), but clearly made by a different toy design team from the others released in 1986, which were all variations on 1984 toys. He was a made-for-the-Movie toy. He just happened to be smaller than Hot Rod, Kup and Blurr, the other Movie Autobot cars, and would be grouped with them if it weren't for his Mini Autobot size. His Japanese toy C-number shows the toys he belongs with: tfwiki.net/wiki/List_of_Japanese_ID_numbers#Fight.21_Super_Robot_Lifeform_TransformersMartin Not really disagreeing with your point, but most of the movies core cast were released late in the Scramble City period. Im wondering if that was due to the delayed release of the movie in Japan. Maybe Takara wanted to hold off releasing them in the hope the film got released somewhere near sensible.

I have to believe that if they'd given the person who re-engineered Huffer to make Pipes the Wheelie job, he would have turned out very different. Martin What, an orange Bumblebee turned round with his original head removed and the new one facing the other way? tfwiki.net/wiki/File:FriedmanAuctionWheelieModelEdit.jpgNot to go all Phil, but suddenly I am wondering if there was some link between Wheelie and Goldbug. Not in a Wheelie is Goldbug way. But in the way the early design for Ultra Magnus ended up being used for Orion Pax while Powered Convoy became Magnus.

This is true, all the movie cast underwent at least one revision after the toys were set in stone. I don't know if we've seen Wheelie's original original character sheet anywhere? I don't know whose argument this helps, but wasn't there a bigger version of Wheelie planned before the minibot version? I seem to remember seeing a prototype displayed somewhere.

Wheelie was Autobot car sized and Hotrod was made a giant leader sized toy. Though theres no mention on the wiki about Wheelie, Ive definitely seen the photo.

What, so the underside of the car is the front of the robot mode? But wouldn't the head then face out the back of the car in vehicle mode..?

This is truly magical!
My copy of Kneel Before Zod arrived from Matt today, but the box also contained...
OUTBACK!
WITH HIS GUN!
Thank you so much to whoever was party to this. I've never had Brawn or Outback, so this may be 37 years old but it's totally new to me. What a fab figure! I've got him with his gun on his shoulder, as per Martin's linked pic above.
You cannot believe how much this has made me smile. Pure joy and so kind. Thank you!

when i got outback i lost his cannon on the bus on the way home. this is clearly a source of childhood trauma for me, to the extent that i now have a stock of outback cannons just in case.
