The longer we go, the more I wonder why Punch/Counterpunch was an online collector exclusive, instead of a full retail release in Siege.
I mean, do they think the concept of a counterspy no longer appeals to kids? That a transformer with TWO robot modes doesn't appeal to kids?
No one wants a P/CP update because he's a character that appeals exclusively to eighties kids. No one has fond memories of the character growing up, because he never did anything outside of show up in "Rebirth" for five seconds to say "buy my toy!"
They wanted an update because he was a cool concept for a toy, and still is.
Sitting on him the way they did, just more and more dumbfounds me.

Yes you're right.
We commented on what a poor fit Punch was at the time, lacking the combining gimmick all the other deluxe had. In hand he just doesn't feel like a POTP toy.
All he really needs to feel Siege is a few blast points. Boom, job done.
If it were me, I'd have done him in Titans Returns with two Titanmasters

For nearly the last year Elita Infin!te has existed as a combiner with two Greenlights and two Novastars as one arm and one leg each, one of each on each side. Nice and symmetrical.
Greenlight's arrival has obviously changed that, so off came the doubles and on went Greenlight as a leg, with the spare Ricochet as a temp stand in for the hopefully forthcoming Lancer.
But the colour balance didn't look right with Greenlight as a leg, the eye was drawn to Novastar as an arm. So I swapped Novastar and Greenlight, making Greenlight an arm.....
..... At which point I discovered that the Novastar I had been using as an arm was missing it's connector for the foot and the metal bar that attaches it! It must have been gone when I bought it and I never realised!
Now Elita Infin!te is nearly complete, it's amazing how the colours look like a bag of mixed sweets!

Yes, that's a bit odd.
It's a little questionable where Oritha sits in terms of line, but with 3/5 of her components in POTP, inc the Torso, here seemed a reasonable place to put it.
Now where's my other two Decepticon jets?

If I was a betting man I'd say Micromasters, with TR compatible base ramps & 84-6 Micromasters and Micromasters in Pretenders, which would get the Pretender figures down small enough to work. Expanding.... As has been said I can't see Prime Wars 3 being just 13 warring Primes. That ain't gonna fill a line. What Combiner Wars & Titans return have in common is a central gimmick. So I think it's likely PW3 will also have a gimmick. Western Transformers Gimmicks Combination - done in Combiner Wars
Headmasters - done in Titans Return
Targetmasters
Powermasters
Micromasters
Pretenders Targetmasters & Powermasters seem unlikely. Both are lesser gimmicks to Headmasters and both have had their primary characters milked by Titans Return I think some combination (haha) of Pretenders & Micromasters is most likely. They're the two biggest G1 gimmicks no done and one, Micromasters, would lend itself to doing the other, Pretenders, at deluxe size which is the centre for most lines. The Micromasters would be Titanmaster (head robot) size enabling the Titanmaster (small robot and vehicle/creature) assortment to continue I can also see both elements being done as a "Classic" thing with small 84-6 G1 character Micromasters and classic Pretender. Voyagers I could see being used for Pretenders which Transform. Ditto Leeaders, which I see similar to present forming bases for the little figures. Same ramp & footpeg systems as now allowing cross line compatability. Boy, skimming though this thread a bit, and with hindsight this one is eerie for a number of reasons. |
